On a related note how does it work with Salamander visage? Is the jet black skin and red eyes purely a result of Nocturne and limited to the Salamanders or is this something attributed to all their Successors?

I've never done Salamanders before and fancy a crack at one of the Successors but would like to be as accurate as possible.

Isn't the skin and eyes being attributed to a mutation and also at least having been on Nocturne?

Did the Terrans have it before being on Nocturne or did they develop it afterwards?

If they had it before, could it be another situation like the artist "misunderstanding" what was meant by black skin? So, maybe the lore wasn't nailed down yet or there was also a misunderstanding?

Generally speaking though. Due to the general lack of extensive Salamanders lore, nobody really knows the ins and outs of that whole thing.

And there is also the thing with 90% chance of mutation for successors with their geneseed from some older material. Is this connected? Does it mean successors will in 90% of cases get A mutation or THE mutation? There is also some information out there (iirc by ADB?) about how successors can be completely unrelated to their parent chapter's characteristics. Both behaviorally as well as phenotypically.

We should pester Nick Kyme who still seems to be the master of all things official Salamander lore, but due to his other tasks (and probably general lack of interest for the chapter in the customer base about this) hasn't been doing anything with it. Although he recently mentioned that he still plans on continuing the Circle of Fire series...

In the 30k black book it’s explained that the original XVIII-legionaries from terra also had black skin/red eyes, long before reuniting with Vulkan. So it’s a geneseed-thing originating from the genetic material from Vulkan which geneseed was created :)

(Note that I’ve split this from the Confirmed Salamanders Successors topic.)

Curiously, the Salamanders didn’t have jet black skin and red eyes until after the 3rd edition Index Astartes article. Neither version of the 3rd edition Index Astartes article mentions the eyes or skin, nor do the ‘Eavy Metal miniatures at that time portray such divergences. Instead, they were portrayed as having darker skin naturally (I recall “Afro-Caribbean” being used to describe them at that time, though I don’t recall if that was a term ever used in official publications or if it was just used at the B&C). For example, here’s a page from Codex: Armageddon (3rd edition) showing a few Salamanders Space Marines without helmets:

gallery_26_7488_171805.jpg

This was a significant portrayal because it was the first time that an official Chapter had been shown with something other than (or in addition to) Caucasian Space Marines.

The shift to the jet black skin and red eyes came later. While it may have come earlier (i.e., late 3rd edition or some time during 4th edition), it definitely appeared in the 5th edition Codex: Space Marines.

Quote

Born out of fire, the battle brothers of the Salamanders Chapter have jet-black skin and burning red eyes – a daemonic appearance brought about by a reaction between their unique genetics and the high levels of radiation on the Chapter Planet of Nocturne.

This was unfortunate in that it took the non-Caucasian Salamanders and made their dark skin the result of a genetic deviation (some might even call it a defect), removing an aspect of realistic diversity from the Space Marines. The beneficial side effect, however, was that it gave us a gene-seed defect/mutation that was acceptable (along with the opposite effect suffered by the Raven Guard, that of having skin that becomes pale over time). Regardless, the lore was worded in such a way that it made it possible for Successors of the Salamanders Legion to have similar eye and skin coloration (assuming the mutation was inherent to the genetic line and not a mutation/failure that the Salamanders Chapter suffered later).

The Horus Heresy Book II – Massacre was published in 2008 and cemented the origin of the genetic deviation to the Legion’s genetic nature, making it likely that any future Successors of the XVIIIth Legion might suffer similar effects from exposure to high levels of radiation (with the exceptions of those that might have suffered further mutations or lost that organ).

Quote

This variant gene-seed, however, also has some unusual outward side effects, the first of which, noticeable even in the first Terran members of the XVIIIth’s intake, was a much-remarked ‘ember-like’ bioluminescence to their eyes and a tendency for skin pigmentation to permanently darken in response to prolonged exposure to high levels of potentially harmful radiation as part of their biological defence mechanism, often adopting an unnatural granite-like or obsidian quality with sufficient exposure.

Ah thanks mate, that last paragraph makes for a much more interesting explanation. That means you could do a Successor chapter and have them all at various stages or not at all. I especially like the bioluminescence in the eyes.

Ok, so even the HH book does say it is a combination. Thanks for clearing that up, as I don't have access to that.

But in regards to them first being brownish vs. jet black has been explained to be meant as jet black from the beginning, but the concept artist supposedly misunderstood it as 'black' like people of color IRL and for some reason they went with it at first and changed it later. No idea about the truthfulness of that and I have no concrete source right now.

Considering the page shown above where we see said marine of African origins also shows a caucasian one, I doubt that is the case, they both would have been black if that was the idea...

This sounds like an Internet myth to me. Neither of the 3rd edition Index Astartes articles mentioned anything about skin or eye color. As has been pointed out, the 'Eavy Metal team didn't paint the Salamanders with anything other than normal skin tones in both the 1st edition painting guide and the 3rd edition articles/Codex: Armageddon. The inclusion of a Salamanders captain with a dark skin tone was significant, but there was also the battle-brother (or maybe sergeant) with light skin tone. In fact, Battle Force Vulkan was shown in the first Index Astartes article and that included eleven members without helmets. Of those, eight are clearly Caucasian. If there had been a brief about black skin and the artist(s) had misunderstood, all of the bareheaded Space Marines would have been given dark skin. None of those models appears to have red (or even orange) eyes. Put simply, the distinct coloration of the skin and eyes was something that was retconned subsequent to the 3rd edition publications.

Here are the images of Battle Force Vulkan from the first of the 3rd edition Index Astartes articles about the Salamanders (click the images for larger versions):

Tyler do you remember a fan webpage from the ‘90s and early aughts that gave huge text blocks of background for Salamanders? It claimed the Promethean Cult was that the Emperor would reincarnate as an inferno that could purge the galaxy, and that with no mention of Istvaan, Vulkan put all his legion on a single long warp jump to relieve the siege of terra, and that casualties from lost ships during this jump severely depleted the legion, and that he subsequently declared them a crusading chapter so they could make up for failing to save the Emperor. It would have been in dark text or lime green text on a dark background and probably center-aligned.

I think that’s where we saw the claim that Nocturne was settled by Afro-Caribbean people traveling under cryo stasis from earth.

@Brother Argos created a great Salamanders web page that had all of the known lore at that time. @Pyriel later plagiarized Argos's site, though I forget if he did that for his own site or for a now defunct discussion forum dedicated to the Salamanders (Pyriel wasn't the owner/creator of the site, but he ingratiated himself to the owner/creator and basically caused the death of that site through his poor leadership). Nick Kyme found the information that Pyriel plagiarized from Brother Argos, leading to the immortalization of both as characters in the Salamanders novels.

I don't know which of the sites, if either, was the source of the Afro-Caribbean heritage ascribed to the Salamanders. Much of that information also appeared here at roughly the same time because it was a popular way of describing the Salamanders in 3rd edition based on their appearance and naming conventions, prior to the coal black skin and crimson eyes lore superseding it later in 5th edition (unless it happened in 4th edition - I don't have that codex conveniently at hand at the moment).

In the latest WD, #467, we have a short story where a Dark Kraken take of his helmet, he is described as being pale, "like one who spent their entire existance in darkness", with no mention of glowing eyes, but there is also no mention of him not having glowing eyes.

Keep in mind, though, that the peculiar coloration of the Salamanders is due to a combination of their gene-seed and the high radiation levels of their homeworld.

Even if we assume that Successors will have similar defects in their gene-seed, unless they are exposed to similarly high levels of radiation, there's a chance that they won't necessarily exhibit the same skin and eye colors as the Salamanders. In addition, every Chapter suffers from the possibility of mutations and/or loss of organs. From that, it's entirely possible that a Successor might vary from their predecessor.

That's great and nicely ties into the undersea vibe

This is the source of the idea that Nocturne was settled by an all black population from earth, as far as I know.  You might remember reading it 20 years ago, or hearing second hand that the settlers were “Afro-Caribbean.”  I’ve pasted most of it in the spoiler because it’s obvious that it’s profoundly divergent from anything an author at GW ever wrote.

i really enjoy it. It is complete fan fiction though

Spoiler
When the twenty Primarchs were scattered by Chaos, the capsule containing Vulkan landed on the highly volcanic world of Nocturne. Here his massive young frame was charred and blackened to a dark blue-black as he was scorched by the heat of a thousand volcanoes and the bright light of the lava fields. Managing to survive in the phenomenal heat, he was found by the indigenous population - a semi-barbaric race who worshipped innumerable fire gods. Vulkan planted the seeds of the Imperial Cult into these peoples who now worships the Emperor through their traditional rituals of burnt sacrifices and branding. By establishing the Imperial Cult and subsequently bringing planetary peace between the many tribal factions, Vulkan gained great respect was famed for his fair teachings of love, war, compassion and humanity, combined with righteous fury.
When at last the Emperor discovered Vulkan, he found a huge black man, gigantic in stature, with an inner peace that marked him out as one of the Emperor’s chosen. His love for the Emperor was as greater than any man’s, yet any heresy or infidel was routed out and struck down with the fires of righteousness. Vulkan readily took to his task as Primarch and quickly created a chapter of marines who were righteous and loyal to their Emperor but quick to respond to any threat with wrath and cleansing flames. The marines taken from Vulkan’s seed grew to be large framed marines with a pious demeanour. Each of the marines shares Vulkan’s love of the Emperor and his blue-black skin, reminding each daily of the scorching fires from which Vulkan was born.

The Purging

The Salamander Chapter is the Eighteenth Chapter of the first founding and is an enigmatic chapter, known only for their devout and righteous love for the Emperor. Following the Horus Heresy, the Salamanders Primarch Vulkan set the chapter the task of the Purging. The Purging is the great crusade of the Salamanders. They have taken is upon themselves to delete all heretical, chaotic and alien presences that threaten the Imperium.
During the Horus Heresy, the Salamanders were left isolated in the small system of Rechem Prime, far from the epicentre of war. The chapter battle cruisers had recently been crippled by a strong raiding force of Dark Eldar pirates, leaving the entire chapter helplessly looking on to the plight of their brother chapters. As soon as the repairs were made, the Salamanders made a dangerously long warp jump in a futile attempt to assist the loyalist forces. Fully half of the chapter never made it through the warp, but were lost to the gibbering daemons that assailed them from all sides and dragged them apart. By the time the remaining Salamander ships entered orbit around Terra, the battle for humanity was over. Horus lay dead and the Emperor was crippled. If the Salamanders had been able to reach the Terra in time, then maybe some of the devastation and carnage wreaked by the forces of chaos would have been prevented.
As soon as possible, Vulkan visited the broken body of his Emperor. His massive black frame encased in the dark green power armour only served to accentuate the Emperor’s mangled body. In the sight of his emperor, Vulkan pledged his brother Salamanders to the great crusade of the Salamanders, the Purging. So embarked the Salamanders on a crusade of self-retribution. Their only request, that they gain forgiveness in the eyes of the Emperor. As part of their pledge, the Salamanders chose not to create any primogenitor chapters. They as one felt that they could not do so until they themselves had been purged and made pure. In this way the guilt of the Salamanders would not be passed on. Chapter lore state that this guilt will be purged in the great Holy Furnaces of the Chapter by one sent by the Emperor.

Nocturne

The Salamanders’ homeworld is Nocturne, a fiery, highly volcanic, ash-laden world. The harsh climate creates unbreakable men tempered in the heat of a million lava flows. The indigenous population are a semi-barbaric people from ancient Terran afro-Caribbean stock. These people are fierce and primitive, but unwaveringly loyal to the Emperor and provide the perfect source for new initiates. The Chapter’s base on Nocturne is well placed on the fringes of the galaxy in readiness for any alien or chaos incursion. The chapter is constantly on standby in order to swoop down with fires of retribution and wrath on any threat to humanity. A large number of astropaths and psykers remain in a constantly alert state in order to mobilise the chapter with immediate efficiency. Due to these lightening strikes by the chapter that are often not linked to any campaign, the profile of the Salamanders is relatively low and their fame does not precede them as it does with the more famous Blood Angels, Space Wolves and other Codex Chapters. However, the Salamanders believe that they have a vital role to play, and that their forgiveness should be earned with the cleansing fires that characterise them.
The Salamanders deviate from codex practices in several different ways. The first of these is the predominance of flamer type weapons. Salamanders believe in the flamer as a symbol of cleansing and faith and feel it epitomises their crusade. Flamers are therefore intrinsic to the Salamander squad organisation and battle tactics. This has resulted in a large proportion of flamer type weapons in the chapter armouries when compared to more traditional chapters, this is reflected in the wargear lists. The Salamanders Librarians have also conducted an extensive study into the use of pyrotechnic psychic abilities and therefore make predominant use of such powers. Apothecaries of the Salamanders bear an unusual colour scheme; the left arm and left-hand side of helmet are painted red, right shoulder pad and right-hand side of the helmet are white and the remainder of the armour is Chapter green. The origins of this practice are lost to history, but Chapter lore points towards an unidentified Apothecary who refused to wash off the blood of his fallen brothers as a mark of respect. He therefore painted his whole arm red to hide the blood. Another major difference is in the Chapter’s worship of Vulkan and the Emperor. The Salamanders do not see the Emperor in the same light as many other chapters, or, indeed the Ecclesiarchy.

The Cult of Prometheus

The Cult of Prometheus is intrinsic to the Salamanders’ beliefs and trains the Chapter’s Chaplains. The Chapter trains and maintains a large body of Chaplains to guide the Salamanders to their forgiveness and maintain purity. To the Salamanders, the Emperor is embodied and worshipped as a separate entity known as Prometheus. Prometheus is viewed as a cleansing wrath, an unstoppable force of flame and retribution who is made accessible to the Chapter by their great Primarch Vulkan. Prometheus judges humanity in the form of a raging blaze, a great sweeping sheet of flame. When the final reckoning comes, he passes over all men indiscriminately and each man’s own actions will judged by their own conscience. If a man’s actions weigh lightly, he will walk from the furnace, but if his actions weigh heavily, he will consumed within. Offerings are burnt in the sacred fires and intricate, harmonius chants recite the Chapter’s achievements, giving praise to the Emperor and Vulkan. The Salamanders also swear allegiance to the Emperor by branding themselves, using red-hot irons, with various symbols of their devotion and victories.
The Cult is central to the Chapter and forms it’s Chaplaincy and priesthood. The Cult of Prometheus headed by the High Deacon, Chaplain Orisha Kiya. The position of High Deacon is filled only by merit and proof of devoutness and purity. The High Deacon holds sway over the rites and rituals of the Chapter and is responsible for the driving of the Salamander’ Purging crusade. It is said that for the Purging to end, the Emperor will elevate an untrained initiate to the position of High Deacon who will then sacrifice himself to the Holy Furnace of the Chapter to absolve their self-imposed guilt. The High Deacon commands the council of Arch-Chaplains and under them the remaining Chaplaincy, which has a larger presence in the Salamanders Chapter than other Chapters. The Cult maintains a high number of trainees, known as Deacons. These are the most promising initiates who are trained in the ways of Salamanders faith and instructed in the rites and rituals associated with the rank of Chaplain before they are sent to Terra to receive the rosarius and blessings from the Ecclesiarchy. In battle the Cult provides a formidable assault unit, usually comprising of Deacons armed with a crozius arcanum and often led by a Chaplain.

Haven't updated this in forever so things like WD #467 and the Salamanders who fall to Angron's Blood Curse in the Angron Arcs book aren't listed here but it is everything I had at the time.  Like how in RT days the Sals all had slight infra-vision and as such their banners were (to the normal eye) rather uncluttered.

In my headcanon, the coal skin/red eyes is a gradual thing, getting more prominent the longer they are exposed to the high radiation levels of Nocturne (or elsewhere).   As such, I would expect scouts/newly raised SM to be similar to the Caribbean look of the early editions (or paler), with veterans having the full effect of the retcon look.

I also see a case for all members of the Chapter having the coal skin/red eyes look since they would have absorbed high rad counts growing up on Nocturne, the geneseed then reacting with that.

Unless they recruit from a similarly high radiation environment I don’t see any reason for a successor Chapter to also have black/red effect.

I don't understand why everyone gets so weird about the color of Salamanders. So what if the lore says they have jet black skin and red eyes due to their geneseed mutation. This is the only chapter I continually see folks get their lore hats on and debate seriously for far too long. Paint the models white. Paint the models brown. If a person wants to have them look realistic and relatable, do it. But this constant "wElL tHe LoRe SaYs ThIs....!" *Insert repeated statement of copied lore point on their aesthetic is old as hell. If you wanna follow the lore to the letter, do that too but let it go, please

While I agree with the broader point – 'paint the models how you want' – I do think it's worth noting that considerations like the colour of Salamanders' skin arise repeatedly because this is a hobby with a social, collaborative aspect, and we want to find out what other people think.

We are all not only able, but explicitly invited to engage with the hobby on our own terms. In a purely personal space, you (and I, and everyone else) are free to let our imaginations soar. When we're playing games with other people, showcasing our painting or – as on this discussion board – discussing things, we're likewise free to explain our ideas and interpretations of (often deliberately loose) canon – but others are under no obligation to agree.

Discussions like this are part of the fun of the shared universe – and I disagree entirely on your point that it's the only Chapter about which folks get their lore hat on. Off the top of my head:

  • Who drives the tanks in a Codex Chapter?
  • The colour of Imperial Fist veteran helms?
  • Do the Iron Hands have a Chapter Master?
  • Do the Minotaurs us the geneseed of a particular Traitor Primarch?

etc. etc. ad infinitum – and that's just the tip of the iceberg with relation to Space Marines in particular.

The skintone of the Salamanders is particularly ripe for discussion for a number of reasons, including:

  • It has long been inconsistent or unclear through the lore and artwork
  • It is particularly distinctive, notable and unusual
  • It was stated explicitly only relatively recently
  • The in-universe reasons and implications are explored only thinly
  • It affects the natural focal point of most space marine miniatures
  • Anthracite skin is difficult to paint in a way that pops
  • There are real-world concerns and sensitivities about inclusion and representation.

The latter point skirts close to the wire on what is allowed here, but it's notable that the Salamanders in Codex: Armageddon included the first Space Marine models to prominently be painted with non-caucasian skintone (though not exclusively so, even within that publication); with no further explanation, leading to all sorts of interpretations.

It's precisely because this is a potential upsetting issue that I think it brings up discussion – and happily, this is generally thoughtful and sensitive. In my experience, this is not only because people mostly want to get a positive reaction from others when they interact, in whatever way, with other hobbyists; but because generally people are nice, and don't want to upset anyone.

I'm happy to say that in my experience the vast majority of people who engage with the hobby do so in a positive way; so even if they disagree with a particular intepretation or idea, they're able to do so in a live-and-let-live way. That ability to discuss and debate rather than argue is rather than point of the discussion forum, no?

Does it matter what colour we paint our models? The short answer is 'No, with a but,' the long answer 'Yes, with an and'

But no one here is getting weird here about the colour of the Salamanders, it's a discussion of their prominent physical mutation which is just one of many characteristics of who they are and how this impacts their Successors. The topic was being discussed with a great deal of respect and your argument can easily be dismissed with why paint any Chapter differently just because the "LoRe" says that the marines use different colour armour to define them? Why even bother having any lore at all? Lets just paint them all grey call them all Bob and remove any distinction like the Blood Angels Red Thirst or zeal of the Black Templars.

If that is how you want to do things then more power to you, I bear no grudge, you are welcome to your opinion and you do what you feel is best for you but with all due respect this thread is a discussion of the lore of the Salamanders.
