I fell in love with 40k after seeing alot of 3rd edition art featuring black templars or salamanders. So i couldn't resist getting the new box and starting a little crusade side project that i could team up with my Sisters of Battle.

So the idea is that the Elding Crusade is lead by one of the sword brethren Helbrecht appointed to Marshall after meeting with Guilliman. The crusade is charged with making the crossing into Imperium Nihilus and wrecking havok on any foes they come across.

The Crusade badge is a white lightning bolt against a field of purple to represent the crusade smashing through the maelstrom.

Ive so far gotten 3 members of the crusade squad done and trying to go a blanchitsu inspired paint job.

I've always liked medieval heraldry so i plan for every brother above the rank of neophyte to have their own tilt shield depicting their own personal heraldry.

Lovely marines! More please? :biggrin.:

My dude! I'm doing the same with my Templars. It's definitely useful in adding some spot colour to mostly monochrome models

Beautiful work, and such a moody and well-dressed backdrop to photograph them in!

Thank you! The game mat i use for the backdrop works well for some of my brighter painted armies so was worried the black on the templars wouldn't pop enough. But im happy with the results.

Yeah, it really does. Its Also a good opportunity to practice some free hand. Hopefully i can move on to more complex patterns once I've gotten use to it.

On the mini update side.

I wanted to build a chaplain for my crusade force but had already used a lot of the primaris chaplains as bases for conversions on other projects. So I wanted to find something different to use. My initial plan was to use the new castellan and switch out his axe for a crozius. But i didn't realize until I was already at my local store, that the new BT were on two weeks preorder. So i decided to pick up a knight-relictor from AoS and am quite happy with the results.

I really don't like the look of stormcast legs for space marines and would usually switch them out. But since he had such long robes, I could live with leaving them be.

Very lovely.

I have the model and plan to turn him into a Sanguinary Priest and this will be great inspiration.

Nice! The robes should work really well for a Sanguinary Priest.

Huh, I also had the same idea for the Knight-Relictor. Mine is slightly different in build, but that's basically what mine is looking like so far :laugh.:

With the mace and deathmask the model just screams chaplain.

Slowing working on the rest of the crusade squad. First up is the Sword brother. I already love the pose so didn't want to change it up too much. Went for a horus heresy Dark Angels head and scratch built a tilt shield from some spare plasticard.

I normally wouldn't go for backpack banners but I felt if they are gonna fit for any chapter it would be Black Templars. The idea is that the banner bearer is chosen by the Sword Brother and is appointed as his second. Plan is to free hand two emblems on the banner, the Sword brothers personal heraldry and the crusade heraldry.

And a hero in training needs his squire to carry his equipment.

Got to play around with a decent amount of free hand some emblems and text. I was nervous that with too many different colors the model would be too busy, but a layer of streaking grime on the shoulder pads and banner helped tone most of the brighter colors down. First model where i have been happy with the eyes.

Im still trying to get the hang of different skin tones.

The Sword Brother leading the Crusade squad. His heraldy is on his tilt shield and also on the banner.

Shot of the squad so far.

Excellent work! I love the modifications you're making to your models. Also, the paint jobs are stellar. I especially like the dirty white on the pauldrons and the colorful heraldry. Looking forward to seeing more.

Finally able to finish off the rest of the Crusade Squad. But at some point I'll probably bump them up to a 20 man squad.

Wanted to green stuff a tabard that was close to the older upgrade kits. Pleased with the results and will probably do something similar too many other future models. The checkers were a fun challenge and im happy with the small accessories I was able to add to the shoulder pad.

Here are the rest of the neophytes.

Next on the drawing table is either a 5 man intercessor squad or building a shield Marshal using the new Marshal as a base.

Got my hands on the imperium magazine captain to convert into a Marshall. Tried a molten blade effect and a light OSL effect. Quite happy with the textured look on the tabard.
