Nice kitbashing, they have a much more rugged, frontier, look to them than the standard build.

Excellent! Thank you. That's the plan, that they're slightly less "officially" equipped due to being on a Frontier World and maintained by a pretty lean operation headed by a Magos who would prefer less oversight.

Not a model update, but a new post from yours truly in the Special Projects forum regarding the planet Dalarna, home of my frontier-based Skitarii builds, but can serve as a setting just as well for the VG's themselves, but the details of how they end up on this planet such that the two factions interact will have be filled out in due time.

For now, it can be known Skitarii are under the command of the Magos mentioned in the post, a bad guy is obviously up to no good. He'll get a model and some more lore soon I hope!

Cutting up Brother Garus’ torso has changed me.

Tiny bit of the edge of the mechadendrite censers diced up to create an input, and then I gently bent the tubing from the omnispex arm to fit into the back part of the Neophyte Hybrid suit. Took forever, and of course I nearly broke it and wanted to give up the whole time.

All in all, a huge success!

WIP Voidsmen or something with this Rockgrinder passenger body I ended up having a duplicate of.

That did turn out very nicely - can't wait to see him with the dohicky glued on.

My wife likes to make a big deal of my "carving up body parts" so... welcome to the club?

Complete!

Except for that GSC symbol, of course. I have a few ideas for what to put there, same problem as the rest of these new builds. Wristwatch bits, IH upgrade dials, or I might try sculpting some sort of icon in its place. I could always keep cutting and add some belt stuff to cover it up entirely. We’ll see.

Thinking this could be the start of a counts as Voidsmen squad. Maybe he’s on the ship that brings my newest Inquisitor to Dalarna to investigate the rogue Magos. I still haven’t figured out what kind of heresy he’s doing, anyway.

I am still doing the rest of the Skitarii as well, having been just waiting on Rockgrinder passenger bodies.

I would think cutting a little inquisitorial "I" out of plasticard and gluing it there would be relatively straight forward, much like how I put little chaos stars on my genestealer cultists bases chaos cultists.

Similar pose. Sometimes the bits fall as they may.

This is number 8. I have an arc rifle conversion almost done and then I’ll need one more regular Ranger. I have all the bits for both, so those are next.

These two have taken the longest, as I’ve been hobbying, but not necessarily in a particularly focused way.

I have had fun trying to make do with these two Ridgerunner/Rockgrinder gunners now that I ran out of Neophyte Hybrid bodies that weren’t too hunched. Still need some GS work to make the leg graft work on the “arc rifle” guy, but I’m happy with the pose, idea, and Tommy gun conversion.

Update:

Finished both, and ended up doing a head swap on the Alpha, both for visual continuity with the rest of the unit and scale. I like the Tech-thrall head, but it ended up just being too small for me.

This means this squad is finished being built, aside from whatever I decide to add to replace the GSC icon for about 6? of them.

What FIredrake said - combining the genestealer cultists and skitari was inspired and looks way better than it has any right to.  I particularly like it where you've also done a leg swap - there is something about those spindly bionic legs that is so appropriately mechanicus.

Ha, thanks! Totally agree. In this case it was the Rockgrinder (or Ridgerunner) gunner torso that had nothing from the knees down, so this one was out of pure necessity. I've found a few other versions of this sort of conversion with the Skitarii lower legs—maybe for the same reasons or not—and it's pretty tricky to line them up to where they only look *a little* knock-knee'd.

But I think them looking spindly and a little unstable—and especially with the forward neck posture from the Neophyte Hybrid bodies—that makes them look just uncanny enough to look like perfect rogue frontier Ad Mech infantry.

Been a while, and it's now getting too humid to reliably go out and prime, so I tend to put it off until Fall, or I just need to be really careful about when I try to spray.

All that to say that I have shifted away from minis for a few weeks to work on a trash-based scratch build. Not sure what came over me, other than really enjoying the design of the sets in Andor and spending too much time watching scratch builds on YouTube. (I know I have been inspired by @Brother Christopher's Thunderhawk, that's for sure.)

This is supposed to be some sort of water purification station, tentatively known as "The Still".

Nothing here is glued together except the banding and the lids, and sub-assemblies for the walkways.

First photo shows the general concept, although without the second, taller catwalk that will extrude from the 16oz can. Bases are instant coffee lids, sort of like JIF lids but obviously a smaller diameter. Two types of dolphin-killers re-porpoised for the tops of the tanks, with the white ones flipped over to provide short railings, presumably for someone who might mag-lock in if they need to perform service. Drywall tape provides the grid, and the piping is the same toy set that Eric's Hobby Workshop and Wyloch and everyone else use. The bridges are made out of chipboard, cereal box, and granny grating.

Second and third photos show closeups on the structure for the banding, which is just 1cm strips of cereal paper cardboard, and I covered the joins with rivets (stickable beads). The top and bottom bands on both cans are reinforced (to cover the seams) and then riveted over, and the very middle bandings on both cans are connected supported by a sort of grid/figure 8 overlay that is maybe where they get magnetically loaded or something. I did really need to cover those seams though!

Additional vertical banding was then added to support the where the 1/2" hardware cloth ladder will attach. There will be a second short ladder from the smaller up to the taller can, as well, but it's not in the photos.

Fourth photo shows a side view, but still with no upper catwalk. You can sort of see the figure 8 structure of the banding on the smaller tank/can, it's the same as the little over lay on the big one but only connects two bandings.

Fifth photo shows the underside of what will be the upper catwalk, and I built some little folded bits of 5mm chipboard that I then glued a bit of bent cereal box onto that will serve as receivers for toothpicks, which will act as struts and connect down to the middle of the big can.

Sixth photo shows me holding up the upper catwalk, which will be held up by toothpicks at a 45 degree angle instead of my hand.

Will need to mount it on a base, for sure, and add some more tubing. I might even add a computer to make a "water meter" for extra dystopian points.

After that, it's Mod Podge and paint!

Thanks for looking!

Completed strut system, it is actually pretty strong. The tooth picks keep the chipboard at both points from straightening out and provide a decent amount of tension. I added cereal box at a roughly 45 degree angle on the bottom mounts so they would be flat on the tank. Other than that, just tacky glue, hopes and dreams.

I'm glad you found my endeavours inspiring! That means a lot.

Good luck with this project. I'm loving what I'm seeing so far. I'm feeling... nostalgic? This is some properly oldschool hobbying right there.

The use of materials and resources is very creative, too. I particularly love the grid of the walkways and the ladder. Yours will look amazing; it's obvious even at this point - a lick of primer/paint, some drybrushing and staining will work wonders. You have a good deal of details and textures for an easy and extremely effective paint job.

I kind of wish I had the motivation in me to pursue a similar project (I remember making designs of a fortress-like structure to use as a display) but I can't see the application, i.e. I don't play often enough to use terrain.
