Because no one is deep striking in something that a lascannon cares about, and you've got enough stuff that even something like a monolith that does end up deep striking probably won't be able to fit anywhere left.

Recon increases their save; benefit of Cover just lowers incoming AP by 1, so there's no place for a doubling up to happen. They would effectively be doubling up the same way that we can make heavy and Take Aim double up; theyre technically modifying two different things so they can layer. So, no, it doesn't TECHNICALLY double up the AP protection, as it also lets you benefit if there's just -1 AP coming in.

With the amount of infantry bodies you have, it might be a worthwhile consideration. Might need to verify the strats make sense for your game plan tho, as it's a lot of weird ones.

That’s why I have mortars and autocannons as well.

Thinking about dropping my Catachan HWS, from my list, which gives me 70pts.

im torn between a Cadian command squad to babysit 2 Cadian HWSes for orders and the overwatch buff.

or another castellan to accompany my CSTs.

if I take the castellan I’ll also be giving him vanguard honors for advance+disembark.

Notable actions within the game.

my castellan killed 1 terminator. His chimera held on with 4 6s to save last two wounds for the next turn.

exterminator and engineers killed a redemptor dread.

techpriest killed 2 intercessors.

disembarked my engineers and he overwatched them with his intercessors. scoring a lot of hits and wounds 13 iirc, saved 10 of them.
