A 900 page book would be falling apart from the moment you held it in your hands I walked over to my book shelf and noticed my paperback copy of the Crippled god is almost 1200 pages. It's not falling apart and is a pretty comfortable size. Spoiler And my hardbacks of Dance of Dragons and A Memory of Light are both 900+ pages and going strong. And those were both books that were planned as one and got split into smaller components. A final book in a long running series can be big, both narratively and physically. Black library ain't pioneering nothing. Black library ain't pioneering nothing. I’m aware BL isn’t publishing the longest books in the history of printing. I know I read mostly e-books but I have been to a bookstore or two before! What I meant was that there’s been a noticeable decrease in the quality of BL’s limited editions with the longer siege novels specifically. This lack of quality doesn’t seem to apply to BL’s other limited editions, so I think the length of the books, coupled with the heavy gloss pages of the illustrations, weakens the bindings. Thus my comment. Yea it was more of a comment of BL just milking the collectors off multiple release waves, rather than a big book being impossible for them. cheywood 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/376602-the-end-and-the-death-volume-i-discussion-thread/page/10/#findComment-5906538 Share on other sites

Not just collector's, making a 1- or 2 part book 2-3 parts milks everyone, from book readers to audiobook listeners. And its not just milking, putting out substandard product when you know your current binding method cant support the book size is dodgy to say the least. Id hope that maybe when part 2 releases GW has something special planned for the fans. Its taken what, 17 years to finish this series? Maybe a message from all the authors would be nice. At the end of the day I dont think they make much money off the CE's because they have to pay to make them, pay the authors, pay the shipping companies, pay for marketing etc. Their profits from book sales must be piddling while also I think they pay a portion to charities as well. I think really they make the CE's for the fans, and for scalpers to make money. You can see on ebay often people are paying $300-$600 for some CE's and it would be easy for GW to charge that money upfront if they wanted to as I dont think theres anything illegal about setting a high price based on what people are willing to pay. I mean if GW charged $200 for all the Siege of Terra CE's they would still sell like hotcakes and they could always tell you to buy the standard edition if you dont like it. I often dont side with corporations but i feel like GW is kind of doing us a favour by selling CE's at the price they do. Compare that to say Blizzard Entertainment selling a collector's edition of Diablo 4 that doesnt even contain the actual game. Compare that to say Blizzard Entertainment selling a collector's edition of Diablo 4 that doesnt even contain the actual game. I would like to see an omnibus of book 8 at some point. Other than that, baring in mind collectors have been investing in an established limited edition format for the siege, I wouldn't want to buy anything else 'extra' unless it included something truly worthwhile, e.g. a retrospective of the Siege written by an editor or a siege author detailing the planning and writing process. So with all that said, expect a 'mega edition' of the final book in the Siege replete with an extra short story (not available anywhere else, detailing the Emperor's last conversation before his entombment) alongside a Custodes dice bag, and a sticker with John Grammatacus' mugshot on it. All for the low low price of £95! Alpharius902
Highlights I saw: Spoiler The First Four Inquisitors: We now know the first four founders of the Inquisition - Sindermann, Moriana (Horusian founder), Promeus (Promean founder), and Xanthus (founder of Xanthism) Zahariel is on Terra, interested to see what the Lord Cypher does Sor Talgron, the Warmonger from the Word Bearers trilogy, gets a showing Vorx is mentioned yet again, this time as "Lord of Silence" The Sons of Horus have a new 10th Company Captain, Dorgaddon. Interested to see where that goes Also, the Sons' 3rd Company already has a new captain after the last one got whacked in Warhawk Ekron Fal's a guy from the 2nd Black Book Interested to see some Iron Hands also at the Siege Ari'i's a guy from the Shattered Legions anthology The sheer amount of Custodians makes me interested to see whether or not they're PoV characters as the Loyalists start to make an effort to push the Traitors (if that happens) Both Diocletian and Kaeria get a shout out as well Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/376602-the-end-and-the-death-volume-i-discussion-thread/page/10/#findComment-5908131 Share on other sites
cheywood
I’m very interested to see how many of these characters are relevant and how many are fodder for action scenes. As I recall Abnett tends to include pretty thorough dramatis personaes even if a lot of the characters only exist for a few pages or so. Tolmeus
Nice work, thanks. That's a hell of a lot people and so many old companions. But seriously, has Abnett left any Custodian out? Well, now I definetly have to get this novel! DarkChaplain
I wonder how they'll explain Zahariel being on Terra, when he also has to be on Caliban with Luther for the final showdown. Also looks like everyone forgot Yasu Nagasena, who was the bloke who teased the inquisitorial rosette years and years ago. He was with Promeus and defended him and all, survived, and now hasn't even shown up in the Siege. Glad to see Sor Talgron getting some sunlight again. For one, he's a Word Bearer at the Siege, and we don't have many of those thanks to the decision to leave Lorgar out of it. For another, maybe we'll actually get the overslept payoff from his arc after all. Also got a good chuckle out of Dark Angel Harlock, because it brought a certain space pirate to mind. But most importantly: Azkaellon is back, they remembered him! Maximum Thane is also back after dropping off the page for almost the entire Siege. Let's see if we can actually get the contradiction of him being at the Siege and him/another Thane being in The Beast Arises as a later-born Fist Exemplar solved. And with Moriana being listed, it's questionable now if either Cyrene-as-Actae or Katt will step up to become Moriana as we know her. Unless they're cheekily listing characters twice again, before and after assuming new names or titles. Anthony Reynolds better just show up in the middle of abnetts books to write him, or Dan better channel is inner mid-2000s grimdark chaos space marine writing. Seriously, every story with sor talgron or Marduk has been done by Reynolds and kept his vibe from the word bearers omnibus, it'll feel jarring without it. Morovir
Spoiler Never thought I'd see the cast of Deeds Endure again. Also, regarding Zahariel, it should be relatively easy given that Corswain will also be on Caliban for the showdown. Also, regarding Zahariel, it should be relatively easy given that Corswain will also be on Caliban for the showdown. THAT's why the names seemed familiar! I wonder if we'll ever get the Keys of Hel storyline being picked up again, too. Corswain supposedly returns with the Lion, though. And Luther states that his Lord Cypher (who is later reaffirmed as Zahariel again, as we knew from the end of Angels of Caliban) being around, though he lost sight of him during the battle of Caliban, saying he heard that Zahariel/Lord Cypher was "cornered by Corswain" and it seemed unlikely he'd have survived that. So their plotlines are definitely going to collide, but Zahariel needs to return to Luther before the assault. Morovir
Spoiler My current theory is that Zahariel returns to Caliban with Corswain and the Lion, and that at least some of the Calibanite Dark Angels that joined Corswain turn on the Lion and the rest of the fleet when they reach Caliban, and they reunite during the battle before Luther loses sight of him again. It kinda loses its meaning if the super-thematic host sacrifices herself to banish it, only for it to come back a few months later. Corinthus
I don’t miss him in the slightest, but given the title of the closing books of such a series of novels is a direct reference to his silly mantra, I was expecting to see him in that bloated list of characters DarkChaplain 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/376602-the-end-and-the-death-volume-i-discussion-thread/page/10/#findComment-5908490 Share on other sites
