Some more progress made on the sisters:

shading is done for the canoness and the Paragon Warsuit (though I did realise after taking this photo that I'd forgotten the barrels of the flamer!)

Some clean up is needed on the white for the other sisters which is tonight's job and then I've got three left to get to this state.

All of them should be shaded within the week and if I'm lucky, maybe even highlighted!

Now for the lonely Ripper:

Drybrushing went well, and I think I can definitely push a brighter green for another highlight layer focusing on certain areas. The same could also be said for the purple but on the topmost ridges of the armour. Though I'm wondering if glazes for the armour might work better on the bigger models at least.

Keep up the good work!

The Ripper is looking nice, love the vibrant colours, I'd definitely push that purple on the top edges of the armour plate. I use filters quite a bit (non-graded glazes) but you have to be a bit careful on larger areas to avoid getting tide marks, etc.

Thanks for the feed back! I'm going to attempt a lighter purple tonight but I've already been window shopping the nid range to see what I can apply the scheme to next. Just a case of figuring out what's going to be refreshed or not!

Yeah, it's something that I'll need to be aware of if I go that route. Hopefully I won't make too much of a mess of them.

A bit more done last night, first and foremost, the lil Ripper.20230426_005433.thumb.jpg.65ab3c09b9a9727c350ea896c8bf00d3.jpg

I tried to push the colours with a mix involving White Scar but it doesn't show so well on camera than in person. Also realised that I missed their tail claw.

the last Paragon Warsuit and Canoness have been shaded and i re-layered their robes, I'm hoping to blitz the pair with their highlights tonight though I still have the hazard markings to do on the warsuit.

Right, all the warsuits are "finished". Why the quotation marks? Because I messed up the front robes of the suits, see below:20230428_004825.thumb.jpg.603883b29b2750db361d5af7a88842e7.jpg

I added too much white Scar and not enough water. So I'm classing them as "good enough" till I can muster the time to repaint the robes and get it right.

The Canoness is also done, and her robes came out great I feel.

This just leaves the rest of this sister squad to finish up now (and the skitari Marshall/Hexmark Destroyer) before the big ole redemptor arrives in the post:

they're all shaded now and ready for highlights and find details.

Maybe you could use a liberal application of Reikland Fleshshade or other similar wash? I do that on my models after dry brushing because I'm lazy and it works pretty well haha. Blood Angels Red contrast may work as well. Should save you the trouble of having to go back and touch up

You could get some of your base coat and thin it down to glaze consistency, and paint over the highlighted area - it should gently tint the highlighted part with the basecoat colour, and knock it back a bit. You may need to do it a couple of times to get the desired result, but it should be pretty quick - you're just putting a 3 broad stripes down 3 miniatures, and the layer itself is super thin, so it'll dry quickly.

4 days since my last post...whoops

to be honest, I've not put brush to plastic for the last few days due to other concerns, but I inched a step closer tonight to completing this squad of Battle Sisters:

20230505_211620.thumb.jpg.fd25620728955405865e94b1b3d638b6.jpg

still need to finish the highlights on the robes (they've been re-layered here) and small details like the eyes.

Also:

Mr parasite got his first white undercoat, its going to take another 2 I think to get a new coat to lay some contrasts on. Though got little time before a redemptor hits the table.

If you're using contrasts, it is far easier to use any of the three "white" primer can GW has. My preference is Wraithbone followed by a white drybrush. It will give a significantly smoother and consistent finish vs. brushing on white.

I'm just using what I have access to for the moment, but I do plan on getting a better primer next week in preparation for Leviathan. I may try your trick as well mind  I may have to also get some more black primer mind as i think mine is running out.

Finally got this squad sorted (mostly, see below)

20230510_233754.thumb.jpg.89e90bd3a633dd870f25bca78a48ed58.jpg

So while at first glance everything looks done, there's three sisters who never got their grey highlights, because I thought I'd already did it, and other little details like the sister superiors bionic eye. There's also the matter of the robes as I want to try one of the suggestions I received here to ease the transition.

Speaking of suggestions

My parasite has taken a step further:20230510_233807.thumb.jpg.a8e56814f0aa9424b9961b465d1c2da9.jpg

I've decided to try @Grotsmasha's suggestion, though in a roundabout way as I lack a wraithbone primer, so I applied a basecoat via a brush. I ran out of time to do the white drybrush step, so that'll be tomorrow's task.

Didn't get any painting done last night, as I was busy building this chonk:20230513_010124.thumb.jpg.5687a406caeb79411d1d67669e65dcc9.jpg

Though, I think I made a mistake somewhere, the bottom hatch won't fold down all the way without trying to push the sarcophagus out. Suppose its no big loss, just annoying as it is a cool feature.

Also, I've noticed my building skills have clearly diminished as it took way too long to make just this torso

  • 2 weeks later...

Been too long since the last update but life has gotten in the way of actual painting!

I'm still wanting to get the redemptor Dread and Parasite of Mortrex done before Leviathan drops (got mine locked down at my local gw, didn't fancy the fight online to get one.)

Speaking of those guys:

20230527_003620.thumb.jpg.f0fc755a840625fbd33e92c54f6af190.jpg

calgar and friends got a bit more done to them as i had the leadbelcher out. They are now on my "tidy up phase" where I go back in with the base colours before I start applying shades and the like. The Dread will be feeling pretty blue next time we see him.

the parasite is ready for some drybrushing, and i think I've found the colour I like for the wing membranes. So hopefully he'll be looking a little brighter!

The robes of the Sister squad look great, it's awesome to see the progression in your painting of cloth.

Looking forward to seeing you tackle the larger Tyranid too, those wings look great to try do some small veins and such.

Thanks!

I'm planning on doing more with the parasite tonight, as I'm going to go over a few times with dry brushing, then I'm going to look at the membrane of the wings itself. I was thinking of using a pale green (the exact name escapes me) but now I'm worried it might look too plain.

But in the mean time...

20230531_214210.thumb.jpg.e9e800055b155d97db6bb934ff65af75.jpg

and here's a closer one

20230531_214233.thumb.jpg.9110ccd620fcc169f75de2ebeede340e.jpg

i have no idea how to tackle the judicars hourglass...

Really good progress! The white of the Ultima on the shields could use a very fine dark wash just in the edges where it's joining the shield. It'll help make it stand out more like a outlined font would

Thanks!

That's what my next step is once I've got clean up to do, should hopefully be done over the weekend.

Last night's painting, was all about this cute lil fella:20230602_013935.thumb.jpg.7f5190cdf8bbb8246114ea5d408231ff.jpg

im really happy with how drybrushing turned out on his armour and flesh. He just needs his teeth highlighting and then he's done!

...

Or he would be if I knew what I was doing with his wing membranes. I could give them a drybush to highlight the stretch marks and edges or what I'm inching towards is a black wash and then a drybrush with that green to capture the colour again apart from the recesses where the membranes meet the bones, then going from there with a lighter colour.

Either way, the finish line is in sight for him, and then it's basing time.

It looks like they're coming along nicely. I do like the green on the body

I don't know if it's any help, but Artis Opus had a video on painting the wings on a Harpy - might give you some ideas/inspiration?
