ZeroWolf's Painting Trials

So here's my attempt at the membranes. I'm going to say it's done (for now). I've got its teeth to do still which I'll do tonight along with base preparations.

I'm still tempted to glue the little Ripper I'd done before on the base but I'm worried it'll look out of place.

On the space marines side of things, they're all ready for a good wash. I've also attempted to do something with the Judicar's hourglass but no photo yet of that.

i have no idea how to tackle the judicars hourglass...

Painting it is quite similar to the classic "Gem" technique. Start by painting the glass in white, then shade all over with a very light, sky blue.

Next, the sand, choose a suitable mid brown, and paint either 1/3 the top section, and 2/3 the bottom section or the reverse. Then with a stripling motion, add in a light brown over that, you want to try emulate the sand.

Next add in some white reflections the top of both halves, then finish with a gloss coat, and jobs a good'un

Finally, the chaplain, Judicar, Victrix Guard, Calgar and the redemptor have progressed to the next level!

still need to fix the shoulder trim on the guard to the right but hopefully wont take much.

you can see my previous attempt at the hour glass there, I will do better next time, mainly I won't forget that there's sand in both sides of the hourglass.

lastly the big boi, I'm going to re-layer the blue armour to fix the mess I made with the nuln oil.

I'm on track to get these finished by next week, which should give me time for some odds and ends before Leviathan takes over...

Yeah, Nuln Oil and comparable washes usually work the best when you only run the brush around the recesses where you want it to end up in. They can pool a bit oddly on large surfaces. Alternatively, salvaging those splashes with a bit of extra work can also be a fun way to do battle damage with added soot and scratches. Keep at it

Well, had a good night's painting last night. The judicar and Indomitus chaplain are complete:

and even better...

My first proper nid in over 19 years is finished! Here we see the parasite of mortex chilling on his thawing snow base.

I also took a picture with the flash on:

I'll be starting up a seperate WIP thread in the nid sub-forum (and a blog!) In the coming days as we begin the 14 days lead up to Leviathan.

So, while I wait for the 24th, I was able to catch up on some of my space marine backlog.

First up, some etb Aggressors that have been sitting there since late 2021. They've literally gone months between painting stages but that changed last night:

and then theres Calgar and his groupies, ready to fight on in 10th Edition:

My plans now are to complete the Redemptor and Imperium Captain (who has suffered the same fate as the Aggressors) and then, I'll see where things go.

It's such a relief to finish painting the stuff that's been sitting the longest. Well done getting them knocked out!

Thanks! It did feel good to say that they were done and hopefully I can keep it going along with painting the newer stuff.

That being said, while the redemptor needs one more night, this guy doesn't:

I'm still not sure why his sword is bent, I swear I straighten it every time but it just looks warped.

Also while I'm not the best painter by any means, I still don't think the face sculpt itself is fantastic. If I could, I'd probably should have tried a head swap like so many good ones I've seen around here.

And now the redemptor is done, eagerly awaiting the arrival of his new, shooty, brother.

he's not been named yet as i want to do some more research and get proper sounding Ultramarine names and it was only when I went to bed last night did I realise that I forgot to clean up his gun where the highlight got too thick (and that I forgot I wanted to mix an even lighter blue fior the plasma parts), for now though he's done.

Since there's only a week and a bit now till Leviathan, I'm going to try and concentrate on getting some more Ultramarines stuff out the door, like my Bladeguard+Bladeguard Captain+Ancient and some more Assault Intercessors squads.

While shoring up my forces the other day it became clear that I could really use a tank (or two) for these guys...Sucks for them though that the Nids are coming to eat my money!

He definitely looks solid. I definitely think that glow on the plasma gun was the way to go (when I started, the coils were painted metal by the Studio team). I think I agree with you that a lighter final highlight on the coils would work well - I think GW generally used Baharroth Blue in their tutorials on painting plasma guns and plasma glow.

On the subject of names, apparently the Ultramarines supplement has a name generator in it? Otherwise, I found one online - I don't know if they give any inspiration?

Hopefully he can survive a few games without getting any claw-shaped holes punched into the armour

Ohh I'll have to try baharroth blue, thanks.

As for it surviving, depends on if the dice gods give me some favour  I've been rolling poorly lately, while my son rolls nothing but 6s it seems!

And currently on my WIP pile...

I doubt all of these will be done before next Saturday...but seeing as I can't paint any nids till the 1st of July  there's a good chance that they'll be done.

Also took a few other pictures for a thing I want to try out on my blog.

Yeah I’m finding creating manageable goals is helping, as a painter I’m a perfectionist and spend way too long finishing single models to the best of my ability, but by instead basically batch painting the entire army but for a single step (all basecoated the right shade of red, all based, all helmets done, all black blocked in etc) it creates manageable workloads by comparison. The models don’t look as good as a fully painted one but it’s getting things to the point of battle readiness and so that they look alright on a gaming table at least.

keep up the good work!

Thanks! Yeah I do tend to do them in stages, this group isn't all at the same point but close enough to make it worth while. Plus, getting these assault intercessors done will bring me to the half way point with my battline troops.

I know the limit of my skills so I'm happy enough with it being tabletop worthy.

Let's see where things are now!

20230617_220831.thumb.jpg.d85a3e40a0cfdd2c5822fca6b734b421.jpg

now they look like closer to Ultramarines! As far as base colours go, I've got bones and robes to do (I really under-estimated how long it would take to put gold trim on all these guys!)

The assault intercessors need cleaning up ready for washes.

That looks like just the right amount of gold trim to be annoying - not quite enough for it to be worth spraying the model gold and then blocking in the blue, but enough for blocking in the gold to take ages

Still, it looks like they're coming along nicely
