Castle's Blog of 40k Stuff

Recommended Posts

As the implies, this is going to be a place where I'll post various 40k projects. This is meant to be a place for palette cleansers while working on my Dark Angels and Imperial Militia for Horus Heresy, but also where I can do projects that pique my interest, be it for interesting or a chance to develop a converting skill.

First up, Exodite Dragon Knight Champion (or a Count-as Shining Spear Exarch)

ShiningSpearExarch.thumb.jpg.8b43af4fdd3a548227a6247274fea677.jpg

The Seraphon Aggradon Lancers really inspired this build for me, as I saw it and instantly thought "Exodites", as I'm sure many others have. The Aggradon was built as instructed, but I hacked off the saddle and replaced it with the saddle from the Shining Spear jetbike, and then using milliput tried to build up a fur pelt, to make it look like a high saddle. My initial thought for Dragon Knights that while they might defend their tribes and herds, I also imagined that they would be trophy hunters, and would probably have a favourite trophy they keep on their dragon. The jetbike's twin linked Shuriken catapult was mounted on the Dragon's left side and a small Eldar Rune was placed on the chest. A small scabbard was placed on the saddle to finish off the look.

With the release of Leviathan and the Call to Arms, I've been persuaded to make an attempt with Space Marines. I could have gone Dark Angels. It would have been easy. But where's the fun in that? (Not to mention that I'm already doing Dark Angels for Horus Heresy. As much as I like the Dark Angels, doing two armies at once would be a little much).

After a little help deciding, I decided to get a bigger barge and go with the Carcharodons.

First up is the Captain in Terminator Armour, Shoal Lord Kaikane, master of the 4th Company and wielder of the relic blade Frenzy

He still needs a little more work. The shoulder pad didn't print out as well as I would have liked, so I might use that to do a little damage from Tyranid bio-acid. Also have something printing to replace the Iron Halo.

Something I want to try with this force is to use the chain bayonets for any bolter armed troops in the army, just to kind of emphasize the ferocious and vicious nature of the Carcharodons.

Shoal Lord Kaikane, Master of the 4th Company, wielder of the relic chainblade Frenzy.

In the opening months of the 4th Tyrannic War, the 4th Company of the Carcharodons were deployed as a part of Task Force Claymore to Auzpar's Folly to combat Hive Fleet Tarasque. This task force, comprised of elements of the Carcharodons, Black Dragons and Minotaurs launched lightning raids against the Tyranids, eventually slowing the alien threat enough to crash against the bulwark defences of the Imperial Guard. Despite heavy casualties, Task Force Claymore broke the back of the Tyranids, allowing them to redeploy to other conflict regions, leaving behind a record of savagery and brutality unseen in the Imperium in centuries.

He's largely done, just need to break out the gloss modge-podge for the bio-acid on the shoulder pad.

And the lesson learned here - paint everything on the sprue before putting it together.

Looking very good. I myself am torn between focusing on reviving my beloved Vlka Fenryka to celebrate the launch of Leviathan, or trying something new - and the Carcharodons are currently top of the list. I do have 2 boxes so perhaps that's the solution....

Anyway, watching your work with interest and keep up the great work.

I totally was not distracted by a game that rhymes with Maldur's Fate 3.

Ballistus Dreadnought, primed Chaos Black and basecoated Grey Seer, ready for painting. Might try to print off some bits for the Carcharodons iconography.

Well I'm back. Life decided to sabotage my attempt at the Call to Arms, not going to go into too much detail, but suffice to say I could count on one hand the number of times I spent an entire week at home. (Actually, I could count on one finger).

Anyway, during the few chances I did get a chance to paint, the Carcharodons just weren't clicking for me. Probably has to do with the colour scheme, painting a lot of grey just made me feel like the minis were unpainted. So I think they'll go on the distant backburner.

But as it happened, I got to listening to the The Lion: Son of the Forest audiobook. And it just clicked for me.

So yeah, doing Dark Angels! Again. For the third time...I swear I don't have a problem!

The main idea for this force will be to lean into the more knightly aspect of the Dark Angels. These aren't just space marines, they're the slayers of beasts, the hunters of monsters and the shield of humanity.

Apothecary (Simple conversion, just a head and shoulderpad swap)

Primaris Lieutenant (Base is the Primaris Lieutenant with power sword. Used the pointing arm from the Bladeguard kit, the power sword from one of the Dark Angels upgrades and the head comes from the DA Veteran frame). Figured he would be the knight who challenges opponents or who seeks a target. Might need to try and sculpt some robes for him.

Terminator Captain (shield arm, shoulderpads and the mace came from the Deathwing Knight box, the head is from Maxmini)

Love a good kitbash! Glad the older Terminator bits can still work on the new Leviathan bodies.

Just to be fair, the mace is pinned to the Terminator Captain sword arm with the hand cut off, and if you do try to fit the shoulder pad on that arm, you do need to shave down around the hole in the arm. Other than that, the scale of arms are slightly smaller compared to the new ones, but I can always chalk that up to it being an ancient suit.

Did a test paint of the Sternguard Sergeant. And Absolution Green from Army Painter is far superior to Dark Angels Green. Still needs a little work on some areas like the shoulders, the back pack and the meltagun.

Gabriel Cadmer, Master of the Third Company, Member of the Order of the Helm, Initiate of the Deathwing. Based on the Lazarus mini with the pistol from the Bladeguard and the right hand shoulder coming from the Stormcast Vanquisher kit, head is a 3d print.

Wanting my Dark Angels to have a more knightly appearance and I think the easiest way to do that is to do a head swap. So I raided my Mk3 Marines and used the head for a Heavy Intercessor Sergeant. And I think it works quite well.

Edit: first Heavy Intercessor Squad has been built as well as a Captain in Gravis armour. Will try and paint them over the next couple of days.
