3D printer go brrrrrrrrrrrrr

I haven’t seen any good 3D alternatives yet. I’m willing to wait at this point and I just received both the Mechanicum and Titan Battleboxes for my son’s Christmas gift. I’ve got an unopened Reaver box sitting around as well that I’m going to give him and at that point he’ll not only have enough to play at least 2,000 points in LI but an Axiom in AT.

Hey guys - this will be advertised more widely, but just to give posters in this thread an early look, about a charity Epic Legions Imperialis narrative event in the UK in March 25.

I am sure everyone has heard the sad news relating to Paul Sawyer (cofounder of Warlord Games and ex-editor of White Dwarf) and his medical diagnosis. The event is named in his honour and known love of the bacon butty, Ba-Con, and all ticket sale proceeds and also a raffle on the day going to https://www.thebraintumourcharity.org/

It will be held at Firestorm Games in Cardiff on Saturday 1st March 2025, the format will be both a 2000pt Legions game and a 'mega battle' on the day in a narrative format. Link here to the tickets, would be great to see any of the guys here if you can make it!

Black Friday was a good day here.  I talked one guy into parting with the Warmaster for basically cost along with the Loyalist Book.  Then another store was going 30% off the kits shown.  Finally I have real artillery.

Today, after finally finishing up all the basing, transfers, and weathering, I took a group picture of the ~12000 points I painted up for my boy.

Mine are still a long way off...

My local place moved all their LI into the clearance section recently.  I got the starter set in a trade for a 40k Knight I had mostly built, so now I'm looking at all that cheap plastic and it's getting difficult to not bulk buy a bunch of stuff that's just gonna sit on my shelf for two years.

I won’t lie, I’m a bit perturbed to hear that stores are placing LI product on clearance. Hopefully it doesn’t mean much, but at least you’re able to get into the game.

If only they had waited to release old world and released the boxed armies earlier.

At my local place, the owner told me they basically over-ordered some boxes and then have had to put some on sale (30% off). It looks like some of the support boxes or Solar Aux, who seem to be much less popular generally, while things like the Legion infantry and Land Raiders are still ticking over.

I guess a lot also depends if shop-clubs have managed to get a Legions group attending and playing there. I'll quite often pick up a box of something while I am in the store playing, if you don't have a community it's just you against all of the other shops in Google search.

There's like nothing in my area of NY going on for the game unfortunately.

The Old World section is similar; majority of non brand new kits being shuffled to the clearance section. They mostly just got WAY too much stock of a relatively unknown game. I'm gonna benefit but it is definitely a bit of a bummer to see.

Gonna grab the astartes battle group for $120. Pretty stoked about that!

There’s a small group here and I know others are buying into it but I have never seen them personally. One of the folks bought my LGS out of all their Mechanicum Battleboxes on launch day and some of the people who work there play, but I’ve never tried to set anything up. I may in the future, though, I don’t want to see the game die before it really has a chance to take off.

Yeah the starter sets sold by me, but none of the followup boxes seemed to draw much interest.

GW pricing is already kinda crazy, asking people to buy micro machines at the price of full GW plastic probably didn't help any. If I could pick up the infantry box for like $30 I think it would've enticed a lot more people.

I don't think the game will 'die'. You have to think the Epic community was many thousands strong globally despite GW not releasing a game for 20 years, would still have continued without Legions.

The almost complete lack of marketing by GW (when did you last see it mentioned in a WD? While the Old World is a front page option on their home page) and a rule book that is not exactly approachable I think will mean the game is never mainstream, like a few of it's forebears were, but hopefully it should be around for a good while yet.

Very true, the pricing is a bit whacky and I’m still dumb enough to buy it too. Two of my three friends playing are fielding at least 50% 3D printed models, I just can’t bring myself to do it. Except for the Armigers, GW is smoking something asking like $60 for 3 of them.

Yeah, good point. I just don’t want to see support from GW dry up. It does seem like they don’t really advertise it all that much, though I can’t tell you anything about White Dwarf, I haven’t bought a copy in over a decade.

I just find the majority of the 3D printed stuff to be so much worse than what GW offers I just wouldn't bother. That being said, I want an entire fleet of Mastodons and GW doesn't seem keen to sell them to me soooo...

Wait a minute, you’re telling me that Astartes actually have access to Super Heavies?

I agree with the majority of 3D printed models. I did just remember that like half of my Spartans are actually printed and they’re pretty nice, even when placed next to the GW model. I still prefer the real deal, though.

An example of some 3D printed stuff, if you pick and choose

The proxy and 3D range was really well supported prior to Legions coming along, you have to remember there was a pretty healthy community of thousands of people still playing the game after the official minis stopped so a pretty good garage industry grew up around that.

Never forget, GW likely made LI to give them the ability to shut down the printing market. Not to actually make their best game.

I'm still enjoying it, but GW are like HR, they are not working for us.

I'm not quite sure how having an epic scale game would matter to them protecting their IP rights.  They definitely did it to see if the market could actually support the game. Unfortunately it looks like the 3D printers won that fight, and means most likely limited LI for the rest of us.

I've read the argument before that 3d printing is costing GW sales but it's not something I've experienced in person.

All of the 3d printed and proxy bits I have were either bought before official minis were available, of a unit that does not have an official mini or were purchased years before Legions came along.

I always try and get the official minis if I can as I want the game to do well, and quite often they are worth getting for the quality's sake - although my wallet is several £hundred lighter because of it!

All of my local group are the same. Most of us have a mix of proxy, printed and official. I don't think I have ever seen anyone with an entirely printed army, and that includes events with dozens of players (although I am sure some exist).

So if Legions stalls and doesn't continue with support, I'd put it down to a crunchy/onerous ruleset and lack of release momentum, rather than people 3d printing (just my 2c on it)

I think they could have done better with sales if the release went better than it did. The problem is, they released two partial armies and didn’t follow up quickly enough to grab more buyers. It took them months just to release the detachments from the BRB, let alone the follow up expansions. People are going to find alternatives to diversify their armies or field their desired themes / formations if GW cannot follow through quick enough.

I don't think it's direct competition in the sense of "LI came out and people printed armies instead of buying them", more that A) Like DuskRaider said, the initial rollout was slow and mostly boring; two armies is good in theory but bad in practice and doesn't appeal to as wide a swathe of player base and because of that B) people either had old armies they either proxied in, or didn't buy into the system since they didn't have an army they liked and either just printed one and used external rules, or most likely, just didn't play the game.

I realize now my post is more accusatory towards 3D printing than I like, which wasn't my intention; I think it's an awesome way to get extra bits and bobs for the hobby, and in LI's case, the only way to get some things (Like my aforementioned beloved, the Mastodon).  I think LI just didn't have the initial oomph it needed to from the company to even have a chance of making it big out the gate.  It could definitely have an AoS like surge later, I just don't know if the supports gonna last that long.
