The Servitor's mechanical arm descended with incredible force, but its movements were obvious, working to some pre-programmed pattern of attacks, and therefore predictable. Deftly Elvrit allowed the hammer blow to slide along the flat of his sword, guiding it just off target by a matter of inches so that it smashed into the deck. At the same time, Hvass lanced upwards, its tip biting into the meat of the abhuman's shoulder and slicing free with a sudden spray of crimson.

The Servitor collapsed, oil and blood still leaking from the gaping wounds Hvass had inflicted.

Without taking a pause, Elvrit turned to attack the last two constructs.

 

Hadad skillfully evaded the first, leaving it exposed to be targeted at range, so the Breacher chose not to undo the Devastator's work by lumbering into the line of fire.

 

Instead, he moved closer to the half-machine that had attacked the Salamander. Its first blow went wide, unbalancing it, so Elvrit took the opportunity to get behind it and jab his sword into its back. A dishonourable tactic in some opinions, he was sure, but his Legion had ever been of a more pragmatic nature.

Blades and bolter shells flashed back and forth through the corridor as Arazakiel adjusted his sights unhurried to launch a second plasma bolt at the armoured foe, little more than target drones in his estimation.

 

Still the master of this ship remained hidden and silent despite the futility of the situation. Was it an intellect that plotted against them or did the lifeless nature of this ship extend even to its command.

Hadrian contemptuously side-stepped the telegraphed blow from the hulking servitor and drew his power axe to respond in kind with a rumbling growl. The dread blade erupted into flame as soon as it touched the techmarine’s hand and it carved a burning arc between him and the lobotomized cyborg.

Elvrit watched as the Dark Angel and the Salamander put the last Servitors down, deactivating and sheathing his own blade. He gave the Techmarine a comradely nod and gestured towards the Engineerium.

 

“Well, Brother-Adept, what would you suggest is the fastest way to scuttle this ugly, fat scow, so we can get back to raiding that garrison?”

He checked his armour’s chrono. How long before Ravyx’ booby trap went off and blew the whole garrison to dust?

Elvrit frowned. So, there would be no return to Phastus, no repurposing of the Iron Warriors’ supplies. But the Dark Angel raised a good point. Would those supplies at least be denied to the traitor Legions?

 

+++Captain, extrapolation please. At their present rate of speed, will the Iron Warrior vessels reach the Phastus garrison in time to prevent its destruction? If the answer is yes, can we do anything to change it - to delay them or pull them away from the planet?+++

 

He smiled grimly.

Elvrit snorted aloud in derision. Did the psyker - his disobedience to Nikaea making him barely more trustworthy than a traitor himself - really dare to question his logic?

 

“I am well aware of our relative strengths, Vurgaan. I do not suggest an attack, I suggest a feint. Carefully planned, a hit and run strike intended only to delay them, to draw them away for just long enough to make sure that the bomb at the garrison goes off. Nothing that would put this vessel at risk.”

 

He frowned and looked again at his chrono.

 

“And only if it is necessary. If they cannot reach the garrison in time, our job is already done and we can leave immediately.”

“Hah! She is indeed an ugly scow, breacher,” Hadrian rasped over the squad vox, with a voice like crushed gravel and metal filings. “We have but to overload the plasma drives and–,” he cut himself off as Captain Nuzry’s voice suddenly crackled in his ear.

 

Traitors, inbound. Four ships.

 

Damn!

 

He nodded at Kraith’s insistence and bade them to silence with a raised gauntlet.

 

“We are outgunned, brothers, and the garrison is out of reach, and we are out of time. We can at least deny the traitors this ship and whatever materiel it carries. I will attempt to overload the plasma drive, and then we can make good our escape and plan further reiving. If any of you are trained in tech-savvy it will make the work lighter…”

 

He paused, and then continued as the wisdom of Elvritt's suggestion percolated through his cogitation circuits. "Your plan is risky, breacher, but to be commended. Better we attempt to deny them twice over if we can. Mayhap we can even lure the bastards out here with a feint, as you say, whilst I work to rig this vessel to detonate when they draw near and give them something proper to remember by, eh?" 

 

The grime-encrusted techmarine pushed past the others towards the enginarium, and the enormous crushing claw of his mechadendrite opened and closed irritably as he stomped towards the chamber’s blast doors. This endeavour had been a waste, but perhaps an opportunity for spiteful vengeance had presented itself. At the very least he could satisfy himself with the wanton destruction of this accursed vessel and possibly another.

 

+Captain Nuzry,+ he growled to the shipmistress, +I am en route to the enginarium to initiate a cascade failure in this refuse hauler’s plasma drive. Coordinate with Brother Elvritt to draw the traitor vessels towards us while the strike team scuttles this ship. Keep me informed regarding the traitor vessels via tight band transmission. Do not let them take the Tribute intact. For the Emperor! Hadrian out!+
