A Time of Reaving IC

[Black Cohort]

The seneschal turns and walks to the lift banks and takes you to the very top deck of the ship.  From there it is only a short walk to a small domed observatory that has been converted into a greenhouse and aviary.  The temperature spikes when you enter, and it is rather humid.  Greenery is everywhere except above where you can see into space.  Several species of xenos avians flutter about or rest on branches, all are very odd, vivid colours.

 

A young woman, who appears no more than a quarter century old and is wearing an expensively plain dress and an old man in a clearly military uniform sit on a bench in the centre of the space.

Elvrit:

 

The Breacher scanned the aviary as they entered for any signs of danger, but his main focus was on the seated figures. He nodded tersely at the young woman. Her seeming innocence and fragility were meaningless - if she truly held her family's Warrant of Trade. If so, she must be much tougher and wiser to the ways of the galaxy than she appeared. If so, this ship and every soldier and weapon aboard it were at her disposal.

 

He waited for a moment to see if any of the other Astartes would begin, but none did. Unsurprising, perhaps. The Legions proven loyal at Istvaan were not those known for their skill at diplomacy and statecraft. The Iron Hand found himself wishing there was an Ultramarine present, or a Blood Angel, or even an Imperial Fist. But they were not.

 

Elvrit grimaced slightly. Accept what was. Adapt, and advance. He spoke, forcing his inner rage down and his voice to gruff calmness.

 

“Lady Talmedion, I am Elvrit Sharr of the Iron Tenth. If you have truly heard nothing of recent events, especially those regarding the Warmaster Horus and the Istvaan system, then we have grim news that we must share with you. Will you hear it?”

Kraith

 

Kraith wasn't a Shadow-Master, nor had he spent much time learning the ways of the Shadows, but he was able to fade into the background when others Astartes were about. Elvrit was speaking to the Rogue Trader and what looked to be her Master-at-Arms, so Kraith waited and kept watch over the foliage.

"Warmaster Horus?  You mean Primarch Horus of the Luna Wolves?  You must remember Legionary Sharr, that we have been on a long range exploration mission for decades.  Now that we have completed that mission we must deliver the data we have found."

"Horus, half his brothers, and their legions have turned on the Emperor. Istvaan was a massive trap to destroy those still loyal to Terra. The Great Crusade is now over and civil war looms." 

 

Kraith's voice was low and clipped. He took off his helm and looked at the humans directly. 

 

"My apologies for the bluntness, but there is little time for diplomatic niceties. We have come seeking allies and resources to combat the traitors. Nothing and no one will stand in our way."

"It is of utmost need that we signal this treatchery to the wider Imperium, until it is known the Warmaster will hold a knife hidden to the back of every world."

"If it is astropaths you seek, you have come to the wrong ship.  And if you seek warriors the ranks of our Huskarls have been thinned by the decades."

Elvrit:

 

“Then what can you provide us? Supplies, munitions, repairs? If you can offer nothing to help us continue this fight, then I suggest you flee at your fastest speed towards the Sol system. Carry word of Horus’ victory and the betrayal by Lorgar, Peturabo, Konrad Curze and Alpharius to the Emperor. Tell him that the survivors of the Iron Hands, Salamanders and Raven Guard will do what they can to impede the traitors’ progress, for there is no doubt that the Warmaster will be making for Terra.”

 

Elvrit frowned bitterly.

 

“I intend to stay, to be a thorn in Horus’ side, to make him bleed for every step he takes towards the Imperial Palace.”

Hadad

 

A garden on a spaceship, was it just a luxury and status symbol, or a necessity to keep moral up so far from home. He wasn’t entirely sure what to made it but watched the fauna and flora with interest as the other’s spoke.

 

Cousin Elvrit was getting worked up, understandably, but perhaps not the best when dealing with someone as independent as a Marques. A change of subject then.

 

Stepping from the back of the group and bowing slightly before speaking.   

 

 

“Lady Talmedion, if I may ask, what data have you gathered out in the wild space? Are there allies that might aid us against the oathbreaker? Or strategic possibilities that are unknown and uncompromised by the rebellions machinations?”

The Rogue Trader thought for a moment before beginning to answer the astartes barrage of questions. "There are many worlds the light of the Great Crusade has yet to reach.  Some are even controlled by various strains of humanity.  A handful of those actually have value or have interstellar ships of their own."

 

She took a drink from her goblet before continuing, "Unlike your legions, we are not front line combatants; we are scouts, explorers, sometimes merchants.  And Terra's light is far from here, surely there are closer places with astropaths able to spread word.  And while I cannot provide you with warriors for your war, we have gained weapons and gear from afar that few in the Imperium have heard of.  They are too few to equip any of the Huskarls with; the mining Kindreds of the League of Vorr provided some particularly interesting items."

"Could you tell us more about them, please?"

The Iron Hand's frown deepened momentarily. While he knew that it was possible that human worlds outside of the Imperium might possess ancient, superior technology that could be reclaimed and used by the Emperor's armies, it was the province of the Mechanicum to gather, research and approve such equipment for use.

 

However, the Rogue Trader did have a representative of Mars aboard. Magos Seven Bractar, who they had briefly met in the hangar. Perhaps that was his purpose among this crew? If Bractar had vouchsafed the right to use such weaponry, confirming them as archeotech of human origin, unpolluted by xenos filth, then wouldn't it be acceptable to turn them against Horus and his followers? Elvrit wasn't sure about this, but he decided he would wait and see what the Trader could offer before dismissing it.

 

“We will continue to search for an Astropath, but I am unsure how useful they will be. Warp communication has been… challenging… for some time. That is why I suggested that a message needs to be carried towards Terra in person. Even if you cannot join our fight, you can take our warning to the Emperor. Consider this vital task, Trader, and whether you are willing to do your part… but in the meantime, show us these wonders of Humanity's past that we might use as caltrops in the path of the Warmaster.”
