Grav captain

10 intercessors

5 hellblasters

3 bladeguard vets.

Far more palatable to play against than the current incarnation and much better for a core force IMO. I've no interest in Dark Angels but for collecting and playing against, much improved.

It has good purchase value, especially when new patrol boxes have fewer and/or cheaper models.

Codex marine patrol once have the shadowspear marine models + 1 impulsor(which has a ridiculus £50 price tag now), now it only have less than 50% of Leviathan marine half.

Can't clearly recognize the heads/shoulder pads in the photo, but I guess it doesn't contain the new DA upgrade sprue(£20 price tag)?

Gravis Captain is a bit weird. They included a character that can't join any of the units.

Ork CP with mega armoured warboss also says hi.

This isn't good?

No synergy's.

It's a variety of combat and shooting, core marine units and some elite.

For a newbie or just cp games it'll work well.

I'd rather play against this than their current one of 3 flying bolters, a dread, a character and a 5 man intercessor squad.

Was expected since we already had rumours about the contents but I still thought there might have been some mistake as the Gravis captain can't lead anyone here?

Wondering if there is at least an upgrade sprue in here, since it wouldn't even be good value if there isn't.

Would only be 18% discount vs on average 25% on the new Necron/Admech ones and 36% on average for the 9th edition CPs

It makes perfect sense from a GW point of view - keep the HQ out of the unit in combat patrol so you don't have a mini deathstar and have an extra independent piece and then also pushes the person moving on from combat patrol to get a gravis unit to escort the captain and leaves them open to any of the HQs to join the other squads.

If this was a BA box with a new BA sprue instead of DA I'd probably pick it up and build a new fancy squad of intercessors with the new bling even though I have plenty of the basic old starter set guys.

They really miss the mark when not using at least one special unit for codex divergent chapters. New players especially will just see green ultramarines. They could have at least added a chaplain Instead of gravis armor. They even have a new upgrade sprue to add for bikes/speeders/termies.

I was going to question why the gravis captain but the reasoning up thread does make sense.

As to why this would be generic, to maximise sales. A box like this could appeal to most space marine players and DA fans will still probably buy this. As I've theorised elsewhere, does this point to a trend of every army getting a new cp or will some of the later ones go through unchanged? Guess we'll see with Orks and Chaos (already rumours that the Tau one is changing)

This looks good for new players, good solid base to build up an army from. Also seems like a bit stuff than some of the existing combat patrols, especially if the intercessors can combat squad. Deathwatch and even the standard SM combat patrol with the terminators will be a bit undergunned (well at least until Deathwatch get a new combat patrol)

If it has 2 of the new upgrade sprues and still cost the same as current combat patrols it's the same value as the current one, more or less. It's an ok combat patrol, personally I wouldn't even bother buying it for other chapters, part of the value of the box would be the (hopefully) 2 new upgrade sprues. (Unless you can sell the upgrade sprues and get some of the cost back)

I would have thrown in there 3 Outriders instead of the Hellblasters just to have units from all the wings, but it isn't bad.

Yeah, if we're wishlisting, I would have gone for:

  • Master Lazarus kit (though built and rules'd for the generic Lieutenant with MC Bolter + Power Fist, rather than the Lazarus character)
  • [Alternatively: Primaris Lieutenant Zakariah]
  • 5 Hellblasters
  • 3 Outriders
  • 3 Bladeguard Veterans
  • New DA Upgrade Sprue

//

It's hard to tell, but honestly it looks like the new upgrades aren't in there. Tellingly, they come with a Power Sword Intercessor arm, and a little backpack icon, yet the Intercessor Sergeant has the standard "bolter strapped, pistol out and up, checking my forearm screen" build.

I wonder if they didn't provide Outriders as they would have had to provide a third upgrade sprue.  There is only one wing(?) to upgrade an Outrider to Ravenwing on each upgrade sprue.  It would have been odd to allow you to upgrade two of the three bikes.

I dont think it's a bad intro kit, though having the DA specific new bladeguard types would have been nice. New players will like the hellblasters and intercessors. The gravis captain you only ever need 1 of. Odd choice to include am HQ that can't join the units in the box, maybe it was decided, contents wise, before the new rules were written or finalized?

The new upgrades do only come with the one wing, but have three pairs of Ravenwing symbols (for adding to the sides of bikes). I think the intent is that you only give the wing to the Sergeant.

That'd be quite unbalanced to be honest... Glad they didn't.

I guess it makes the boxes more generic and more widely appealing.

Anyone could still build the kits and then pawn the upgrade sprue. Given that they'll likely be sold out 90% of the time, it probably wouldn't be too hard to offload them.

Ah hadn't spotted that.  Well that does bring a bit more value to the sprue as it can cover one unit.  However seems sad not to see a wing on each bike.

I'm quite happy with the selection for a completely different reason from what's been mentioned: I bought the Dark Imperium boxset when it came out, so I have all the models except the bladeguard to be able to run this combat patrol.

Really, I think they should produce combat patrol sheets for all the boxsets that have been released since the beginning of 8th...
