Lysimachus
Orochi Initiative: Ag7 x2(Lightning Reflexes) = 14 +1(Fury Like Lightning) +d10(5) = 20 Hmm, Vafri (the only one left to roll) won't be able to match that, so… Orochi's utter confidence is… odd, given his being outnumbered seven-to-one. He smirks, rises quickly to his feet, and begins to speak in a voice loud enough to be heard by all. “Duty.” His tone is soft, but nevertheless insistent, somehow impossible to ignore. Strangely, you find you cannot do anything but wait for the next word in the sequence. “Sable. Thirty-eight. Forge. Lantern-bearer. Ten. Rhino. Passive. Homecoming. Alpha.” The droning words are somehow hauntingly familiar - seemingly random, but as each is spoken it fits perfectly, like pieces of a steel puzzle locking together. Or a cage. Somehow, they might remind you of your Deathwatch training - strapped to indoctrination tables, seeing the myriad images inserted directly into your minds, being forced to listen to your Watch-Captain's hypnotic voice… what was it he had said…? “You cannot move.” The words come together with the impact of a bolt round to the head. This command cannot be disobeyed. Your muscles lock, as though wrapped in bands of hardened plasteel. Hands that were raising weapons, legs that were preparing for a leap forwards to attack - all are halted. Asterius: Even as he is speaking, Orochi looks irritably at Asterius and presses something on his belt. There is a quiet ‘pop’ and the Blackshield notices a sudden surge of power from within his bionic limb, before his armour loses all power and freezes into total immobility. Anyone who had ever been hit by a haywire device would immediately recognise the effect. You can still see and hear, but all movement is impossible until the machine spirits of your armour can restore themselves. Orochi smiles. STRUCTURED TIME DOES NOT BEGIN… YET… OOC: Firstly, all players gain d5 Insanity Points as you are affected by the hypno-conditioning Orochi has secretly implanted. I will allow the mental reinforcement provided by the Corruption Resistance Defensive Squad Mode instituted by Omoc to affect this, so you can all take 1 away from the roll (and Omoc can take 2 away) just as you would with Corruption Points. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, none of you can move. At all. However, don't panic! Orochi is not currently doing anything to attack you, and no-one will take any harm from this temporary paralysis (aside from the above mentioned Insanity Points). In a moment, you will all get the opportunity to break free from the hypnotic suggestion. At that time, you will benefit from any and all appropriate Talents (I vaguely think a few had taken Orthoproxy?) and I will also allow a +10 bonus to Wp from Omoc's Squad Mode to apply. However, note that abilities like Resistance: Psychic Powers and Abhor the Witch will not apply, as this is not a psychic/warp-based effect. But before we get to that, this little bit is just an opportunity for some final plot point development/ interaction/ Q+As/ name-calling/ villain monologuing/ whatever, as seems appropriate. Feel free to begin (narratively) struggling with the mental conditioning, and address Orochi (or not) as you see fit. P.S. I'll be honest, the bit with the haywire device hidden in Asterius’ bionic leg is simply a bit of fudging on my part in order to include him in this bit. As a member of the original team, he was already indoctrinated well before Orochi came to the Bulwark, and thus there would have been no reason to have him re- hypno-conditioned. Hence I had to figure out something else. Now, I know that Zidemi checked your wargear for signs of tampering, but if you check back, you'll notice in my reply I was very careful to say that your armour and weapons were clean… but I didn't say anything about items concealed within bionic limbs! That was perhaps a little deceptive of me, but such sneakiness is sometimes a necessary part of GMing for such a canny bunch of players, and I hope you will forgive this duplicity in the name of storytelling - I promise there aren't any other issues with any of your wargear! Anyway, just like the rest, Asterius can't move yet. However, on the plus side, I won't make him roll for any Insanity Points! The entire armour had distorted and misaligned by powerful blows. If anything the blunt blows had caused more damage than bladed or power weapon, for while those had cut and scarred the surface there effects had not propagated across it. Rummaging in her pockets for tools to help her each of them proved insufficient to the task. The parts of the armour that where meant to move had sized, or lay at odds with their neighbours, jammed in tight and unbudging. Resorting to her knife, first the blunt side for fear of causing further damage, and then the mono edged to get the blade into gaps she slowly loosened and pried the section of panel away, freeing the access the complex inner workings. The panel was damaged beyond her means and she would not be able to close it again, let alone interlock it with it neighbour once more, and thus would be a weak spot in the Knights defences, but given his current state it was a trade of he would perhaps accept. Or so she hoped. With access to the bio-gear and the black-carapace port she supplied all the drugs the Knight requested out of her supplies. At first she tried to hazard a guess at the dose, bearing her mind the training and einherjar physic, alas the giant urged for more and she complied, trusting that Aednan knew what his body needed, for the short term if not the long. A.T.
Omoc It was though time had stopped, in part. Obedience to hypno-command was not optional but decades of conditioning had hardened his resolve against such treachery, for the Red Scorpions knew no greater master than their own creed and the word of the Emperor himself. Even as the command echoed so the hymn of the Emperors words rose in his mind to drown it out, safeguards both psychological and technological pushed aside the instruction as time began to move slowly but surely and with it Omocs grip upon his weapon. Necronaut
Gerhardt The Black Templar’s muscles spasmed and seized against his will, the deep hypno-indoctrination implanted upon him by this HERETIC rendering him little more than a black statue, imperceptibly twitching in place. Gerhardt was practically foaming at the mouth in inchoate fury, in shame at being rendered so impotent by a few spoken words. His iron jaw was all but welded shut, his throat was constricted as if bound by a choking serpent, and he could not release the bestial scream of rage that was dying upon his lips. Lysimachus
OOC: Ok, we still need Zidemi's Insanity Points roll, but overall it looks like everyone is determined to keep their mouths shut? So to keep things moving and so that we can get into the Structured fight for the Friday update, I'm going to post a bit more. Then we should be able to get started? Orochi looks around. Then, once he appears satisfied that you have been halted, he moves quickly but unhurried towards the blood pool. “Good. I hope you don't mind if I talk as I work. It helps, I assure you. Well... it will help me, at least.” Without stopping he steps down into the crimson liquid, which immediately covers his greaves. It quickly rises up past his waist as he approaches the centre. “I am no fanatic servant of Khorne, gentlemen. I am a thief. I am being paid… well paid… to retrieve what your precious Inquisition hid here after they banished the Blood-Dancer from his hall.” He looks thoughtfully up at you as he reaches the middle. “But perhaps you still don't know about that? Perhaps even the vaunted Grey Knight guardian is not aware of what he guards? Wonderful! Deceits, intrigues, plots, secrets, murders hidden in the darkness… and the revelation of them all. Questions and answers! Lies and truths! These things have weakened the bullish influence of the Lord of Skulls, even as they have strengthened his antithesis. The Great Conspirator. The Changer of Ways. The Lord of Sorcery.” Orochi's smile is impish, playful. “Of course, it's much more my style, too.” With a sudden movement, he thrusts both hands down into the bloody pool, causing the thick liquid to splash up around his chestplate and the lower part of his helm. When he raises his arms again, it is with some effort, as though tearing something free that was stuck in the sucking liquid. When his hands are released, they are holding something - a large, flat rectangular shape. The blood pours away from it as he lifts it further, almost repelled, and the object is revealed. It is a book. Orochi holds it aloft for you to see. It is a substantial tome, one that fills his arms. Bound in deepest blue leather - No, purple. No, green? - it has corner plates, clasps and catches of gold, and is engraved with swirling scrollwork that shines with a brilliant azure light that seems to battle in the darkness with the red emberlight given off by the braziers. However, though it rails against the wickedness of the great chamber, you immediately understand that this tome is no source of purity and goodness. It is merely another part of a greater evil. It is the whisper of forbidden knowledge, of wisdom beyond mortal understanding, but that leads only to the blackest kind of madness. The pressure in the air that you felt on entering the temple is growing, as though you are caught up in the midst of two great storms that are dancing around one another. Orochi seems momentarily impressed, looking briefly around the chamber as though expecting to see sparks flying, yet his irreverent and self-serving nature reasserts itself. “One of the many grimoires of the Thousand Sons, perhaps even of Magnus the Red himself? Apparently one of the earliest written after the fall of Prospero. Found by the Ordo Malleus in, oh, the thirty-second Millennium? Placed within this temple dedicated to Khorne, both to conceal it and to weaken the Blood God's hold on this place. Chaos is balance, after all. A ‘radical’ plan… and successful enough for thousands of years.” As he speaks, he wades back towards the edge of the pool. “But the scions of Magnus and his patron are subtle. They finally uncovered the location of their master's book, and employed me to return it to them. And that is what I will do.” Orochi steps up out of the bloody reservoir, and turns to look at you, tucking the great tome under one arm. He seems triumphant. Even smug. However, he does not look down at the pool directly before him, that you can see better from your higher vantage point at the entrance. The blood is still swirling in his wake. No, not merely in his wake, for the disturbance is not becoming less? It is growing. An eddy is forming, a chop and froth on the surface although there is no wind down here. OOC: At this point you can start to make rolls to escape from the hypnotic suggestion, along with any IC observations or comments about what you've just seen and heard, of course. This will require a Hard (-20) Wp test, but as mentioned you will all benefit from +10 from the Squad Mode, plus any appropriate Talents. Then we will move properly into Structured Time and those who were successful will be able to act normally in the 1st Round. If you fail, the test will be Challenging (+0) at the start of the 2nd Round, and Routine (+20) at the start of the 3rd Round.* All of this has the bonus effect of giving me an explanation that the character of anyone who doesn't roll (or isn't available to take part in the Structured Rounds) is obviously continuing to struggle against the compulsion to obey Orochi's order to stand still! Any questions in the OOC. *Obviously Asterius won't need to roll the Wp test in order to act. However, we can assume that Asterius’ armour is in the process of gradually ‘rebooting’. But this process takes time, so although he definitely will be able to act in the 1st Round, he will only get one Half Action (but then can act as normal in the Rounds after that). Mike Zulu
Zidemi: What was this stasis? Corruption of the cyber-mantle? A machine virus? A logi-curse? Sabotage of bionics? How had he missed this? No, all of Zidemi’s power armour’s systems were idle and functional. His ionic heart still beat steadily. It was the flesh that ignored his will. In the corner of his eye, he saw the others had suffered the same fate. Only Asterius had suffered some form of machine curse. Lysimachus
OOC: Ok, update time. What I will do, as we haven't had all of the Wp tests to be able to move, is start Structured Time and let people who haven't done so yet roll their Wp tests at the start of their Turn to see if they can act. That way it gives players a bit more time to roll them? Also, bear in mind that anyone can use FP for a reroll or to improve your chances on that roll if you wish…? Scene 35. RAGE. The crimson lake continues to heave and roll, becoming even more wild. Droplets of blood appear to be boiling off the surface. It is as though the removal of the Tzeentchian tome has caused an imbalance in the chaotic forces acting in the cavern. The Blood God's rage is becoming a living, breathing thing, warping the very air all around you. Sudden explosions rock the pool, as though depth charges were being set off just beneath the surface, one after another, hurling great sprays of thick red liquid upwards. A bloody mist is forming, hanging in the air above the reservoir. There are shapes visible in the vapour, somehow coalescing out of it - hunched, humanoid, but horribly elongated. On the near side of the pool, less obscured, these shapes are becoming clearer. Their skin is scaled and as red as the blood they are emerging from, their eyes are shining yellow, and great horns sprout from their brows. Each carries a long sword that burns as though the metal is still molten hot. The closest, standing in the shallows of the pool nearest you, looks up the steps and hisses eagerly, its long tongue snaking out as if it can already taste the richness of Astartes blood. Lysimachus
Round 1: Map: Cohesion: 4 ‘Saga of the Wolf-King’ Oath: reduces all CP costs by 1 to a minimum of 1. Available Squad Modes: Bolter Assault, Fire for Effect, Furious Charge NB. Remember that if you wish to use any Squad Modes, you need to have enough CP to pay the cost of that Mode, plus have at least 1CP remaining ‘in the bank’ or you will all immediately drop to Solo Mode. Also note I've taken off the 2CP cost of Corruption Resistance, and marked you as starting in Squad Mode, though of course anyone who wishes may drop out immediately or at any time. Fear Test: As the team is starting in Squad Mode, the Bloodletters’ Fear (2) will cause 2 Points of Cohesion Damage, unless the Team Leader (or I'll allow someone else to do this if you wish?) can pass a Wp test with mods of -10 for Fear (2) and +10 for Corruption Resistance. Test passed. Environmental Rules: Rending the Veil: As you might have guessed, the environment of the templum is quickly becoming a full blown breach of the Empyrean into corporeal reality. All Characters suffer d10 Corruption Points (-1 or -2, again thanks to your opening Squad Mode). Blood Mist: This is very difficult to see through, so Ranged Attacks that pass all the way across the pool will suffer from the Fog environmental effect (-20 to Hit). A.T.
Omoc The scorpion was already moving before the assault was called, seeking to clear a line of fire to the traitor as his training and implants rapidly drowned out the hypno-code. Lysimachus
Orochi barely notices the Kraken shell deflecting harmlessly from his energy field, but his face nevertheless twists in anger as the Blackshield and his squadmates attack. “Fools! You're just going to make it worse!” With a quick flick, he slips the stolen tome into a large pouch behind his back, and draws his sword and pistol ready to defend himself from what he knows is about to happen next. The quickest of the red-scaled daemons explode into action, roaring in rage and assaulting the closest targets with their blades held high. The rest are sure to follow. A.T.
Omoc "Purge the unclean", Orochis words did not reach him, silenced by his autosenses lest more hypno-commands were attempted. Not that it mattered for it was clear that he was in league with arch enemy and the daemons that stood in their path. The Scorpion did not slow or try to weave as his opponent approached, instead he allowed his bulk and momentum to carry him forwards trampling the daemon and fouling its swing as he continued to close the distance on his foe. Necronaut
Gerhardt The daemon was preternaturally fast and the hideous thing managed to slip through Gerhardt’s guard and cut him to the quick, all but disemboweling him. The Black Templar stoically grunted as the foul blade slid in and out twice in rapid succession and nearly collapsed, but he stood his ground, somehow. “Emperor… watching us… brothers…" Gerhardt adopted a more guarded posture and his blade flicked out in rejoinder to the daemon's previous assault, catching the abomination across its torso.
