hd3
"Behold my long silence is now broken and I am made whole once more."  Yes! Thanks to combat patrol magazine and a couple of generous donations, I'm bringing the Blood Ravens back for an expansion. This also gets me to exactly 1000 points. Without spoiling the reveal, the theme of this second phase is "Named heroes of the Blood Ravens". But before that, they need some elite troops to lead. So I have started with a squad of indomitus terminators. They are mostly equipped with power fists and storm bolters but the sergeant has a power weapon and one guy has the autocannon.  These follow the same formula as as before, with a Tamiya grey primer with Tamiya matt ts -6 black spray and multiple laborious coats of pro acryll burnt red to build up that base colour. What I haven't decided yet us if I'm gonna follow the blood ravens index, DoW1's colours or a combination of the two. I might grab the new white dwarf and see if that settles the debate. hd3
I forgot that nuln oil doesn't work well on this colour, so I spent what feels like the bulk of today doing recess shading on the armour with black templar contrast. I also made a start on the other base colours. I've added black legion for the armour seals, Abaddon black for the combi-bolter casings. For metallics I've used iron warriors, with accent details in runelord brass and pro acryll magnesium. I used Balthazar gold for the combi-bolter skull icons and retributor armour for the belt icons.  The zandri dust in the shoulder takes ages to build up over black honestly. I did three coats and it probably needs more. Finally a wash of nuln oil over the guns, metallics and armour seals. Next up, more zandri dust! Then picking out the small details.  P.S I totally forgot to put Abaddon black on the knee pads like I intended.  I also grabbed some pre-made bases from gamergrass but I'm worried they have too much stuff on them for the terminators to stand nicely. Definitely the sergeants at least. Also I'm not sure how to drill them to make a nice hole for the magnet. I really don't want to buy a drill or pin vice if I can avoid it. hd3
Finished (sans basing) my terminator squad! I tried using agrax on the shoulders and then building the zandri dust back up but it doesn't look great. On the plus side, it does look very beaten and weathered. I tried everything else is just like before, runefang steel highlights on the iron warrior, evil suns scarlet on the red. For the crux terminatus icons I used Mechanicus grey with nuln oil for the back, corax white for the skull and crossbones and then administratum grey for edge highlights. Except for the sergeant where I used retributor armor. I think I might try doing a glowing power field effect on the power sword. I also re used my green lens effect for the eye lenses, white scar, tesseract glow then warp lightning on the back half.   I tried out the gaua colors fluorescent red again for the back mounted sensors. It certainly stands out though I'm not sold on using it as my new red lens default paint yet. Especially with how tricky it is to use compared to acrylic paint.  I notice the red highlights don't show up too clearly here but it's really visible in real life.  Edited July 15 by hd3 Tallarn Commander, Heraclite, Dr_Ruminahui and 1 other 2 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/384743-guard-it-well-a-patrol-log/page/5/#findComment-6179512 Share on other sites
hd3
So now the terminators are largely done, I'm starting on my 'Epic Heroes of the Blood Ravens' section. First up is Davian Thule! For Captain Thule, I'm using an old castra ferrum dreadnought that I've given the close combat weapon with flamer and a twin las cannon. This is also primed in Tamiya grey then Tamiya ts-6 matt black with a base coat of pro-acryll burnt red. I'm using Thule's initital reawakening as a dreadnought movie as my reference.   For the base, I wanted a reference to Thule's history so I used a severed Tyranid carnifex head from the same hive fleet that wounded Thule and got him interred in a dreadnought. Thus he can stand triumphant over the beasts that injured him for eternity.  Edited July 16 by hd3 Dr_Ruminahui 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/384743-guard-it-well-a-patrol-log/page/5/#findComment-6179660 Share on other sites
hd3
Blocked in the recess details on Davian Thule with a recess shade of black templar. I also added zandri dust with an agrax wash on the back.  I'm changing my order for the Blood Ravens a little here to help get a combat patrol ready for game day. So I'm starting on Jonah Orion in Terminator armour and Gabriel Angelos: Chapter Master of the Blood Ravens! For Jonah, I'm using the librarian colour scheme from DoW1 (see below) as shown on the treacherous Isador. I started with Tamiya light grey primer and a coat of retributor armor for the foreward and chest pieces of the armour.  For Gabriel, I am using the Artel W resin 'chapter master's sculpt which I plan to mount on the special base topper from the terminator captain from the old combat patrol. I'm going to run him with Lysander's datasheet as those rules fit the model well (Gabriel tragically has no rules of his own). I started with Tamiya light grey primer and then ts-6 matt black spray followed by multiple coats of pro acryll burnt red for the base of the armour. Then zandri dust for the shoulder pads to match the rest of his troops.  Edited July 17 by hd3 Dr_Ruminahui, Tallarn Commander and Rusted Boltgun 3 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/384743-guard-it-well-a-patrol-log/page/5/#findComment-6179768 Share on other sites
hd3
Mostly worked on Gabriel Angelos last night. I used iron warrior with nuln oil for all the silver before highlighting with runefang steel. I wanted a yellow gold for the trim so I used retributor armour with reikland flesh and a liberator gold highlight to make it op out more.  For the chest icon I used pallid watch flesh, agrax then a highlight of administratum grey. The blood raven icons are black templar with nuln oil and a highlight of administratum grey again. I'm proud of the gens which are retributor with blood angels red contrast on top. I also used rhinox hide with agrax and gorthor brown highlights for the belt on his leg.  Finally I realized I screwed up his arm, the right arm is slightly out of alignment so I used green stuff to build up the bulk of his wrists to fill the gap as well as plug the holes where the resin drained. I might've gone a bit overboard on top of god-splitter but oh well.  Now I just need the cape and head from grotsmasha and to finish the elaborate base. hd3
I forgot to mention I've also almost finished the deep strike homing beacon. And I've started work on the rest of Jonah Orion's armour. The blue for Jonah is kantor blue with pro acryll amp steel for the silver details. And khorne red for the inner cables and oath of moment wax. Rusted Boltgun and Dr_Ruminahui 2 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/384743-guard-it-well-a-patrol-log/page/5/#findComment-6179918 Share on other sites
kabaakaba
Good job. Hm, do you photoshoot with a flash? I see paintjob is accurate and colors are solid but because of light it's looks a bit strange. hd3
Started work on Gabriel's base today. I went with the hive fleet leviathan colour scheme to match Davian Thule's base. I started with a base of wraithbone for the skin which I have washed with thin magos purple a d used Vallejo royal purple with a druchiii violet wash for the carapace. The stones are my usual Mechanicus grey with nuln oil wash and dawn stone drybrush but now I've added a dry brush of Vallejo neutral grey for a brighter finish.  For Jonah Orion I've used kantor blue with nuln oil and re-established kantor blue on the flat panels for the blue armour. The purity seals are my usual khorne red, carroburg crimson wash and evil suns highlight with corax white and nuln for the vellum.  I added a bit more texture to the gold with reikland flesh shade wash and then a dry brush of necron compound followed by a dry brush of Vallejo old gold to add variation.  The power axe raised details are Balthazar gold and I used pro acryll burnt red for the little circle that will have the Blood Ravens badge.  Finally mournfang brown with agrax for the satchel at the back.  I also finished the teleport homer. I completely screwed up the hazard stripes alas. Than full it's just a token so it's not a huge loss. hd3
I've tidied up Jonah with some highlights and attached his arm. First the gold was highlighted with liberator gold and the blue with thousand sons blue. For the force axe I used kroxigor scale thinned with contrast medium then a highlight of runefang steel. Now I just need to add the writing to the purity seals and to do the librarius icon hanging from his wrist. The exhaust vents on the back also need some attention. hd3
So I finished Gabriel's base with khorne red for the tongue, white scar fir the teeth and averland sunset and black legion for the eye. I might go back and do a pin wash of carroburg crimson around the gums. I finished up with a highlight of squid pink and royal purple along the edges of the carapace.  I've based Jonah and and painted in the librarius emblem on his wrist. Once the mournfang brown on the base dries, I plan to go over it with stirland mud, then valhallan blizzard. First though, I'm going to add the shattered rubric marine head as a basing trophy.  I managed to make a brief start on the next round of base colours for Davian Thule. I tidied up the arm joint and the face plate with Abaddon black and started picking out the metallic details with iron warriors. I'm using the screen shot below as my reference though I just realized I need to paint the knee joints in metallic too and not burnt red. Oh well. Firedrake Cordova 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/384743-guard-it-well-a-patrol-log/page/5/#findComment-6180322 Share on other sites
