Greetings

I have a question for the fellow hobbyists. I am about to embark into a long term project of painting the monopose Primaris Space Marines kits, which come from the following sets:

- Dark Imperium

- Shadowspear

- Indomitus

- Leviathan

- Easy To Build, Intercessors, Reivers, Redemptor Dreadnought, Aggressors, Firestrike Servo-Turret, Primaris Invader ATV.

So the question is which space marine chapter to paint?

I am reliant on the transfer sheets which came with the boxes, I also want this to be a classic codex chapter so company color on shoulder trim, red helmets for sergeants, etc. What I don't want is this to be one of the main chapters so successors or Ultima Founding. Also every Easy To Build or monopose model from the future boxsets is going to be added to the collection.

As I have said, this is a long term project and I am now in an analysis paralysis which chapter to paint.

Thank you for your input.

Raptors are really cool and play well with the simplicity of the early Primaris kits.  Also a pretty distinct green despite there being several green chapters.

I also vote for Knights of Gryphonne, cuz Orange Armor is sick.  Angels Resplendent for similar reasons.

Pick some colours you like, do some research around the internet for inspiration and then make your own chapter. It is so satisfying to do so and means you aren’t tied to any one theme.

Also you can maybe some of the basic models there as testers and try a few schemes. You can always respray the ones you don’t use when you’ve chosen the final scheme.

Dang, I was about to say Ultramarines :whistling:.  More usefully, using the Space Wolves symbol for the Iron Hounds. It's not an exact match, but it is close.

The white pauldrons... I'd say go third company, using the red Dark Angel squad type markings and the black Ultramarine squad number markings. [edit] I'm pretty sure the red face plate is because this guy is a sergeant[/edit]

Alternatively, I recommend modifying, layering or splicing the Chapter symbols available on the transfer sheets. What do I mean by " I recommend modifying, layering or splicing"? For example, slicing one wing off the Dark Angel decal gives something a little different:

I don't have time to GIMP a mock up of anything more complicated, but you could use the Ultramarine omega and the Blood Angel teardrop to make a "Omega Scions" or something like that. Just put one on top of the other, like how one would put a squad number decal over the squad marking decal.

Splicing is trickery, because you're cutting two or more decals and laying them down side-by-side. For example, slicing the wings off the Blood Angels symbols and the wings off the Dark Angels symbol; then making a new symbol with the Dark Angels sword and the Blood Angels wings.

The decals are mosty Ultramarines themed with white icons. So this is what I am working with.

My question is which chapter fills the criteria above and as an added bonus works well with what is mostly an infantry heavy force.

The largest hurdle is going to be the Chapter symbol then. Would it be possible to post a picture of the decals?

I'm gonna put in Knights of the Raven as my suggestion.  Their iconography should be well doable with the standard decal sheets you get with a lot of these kits.  Lore-wise, they have a couple major crusades against Tyranids, so various Tyranid bits on Leviathan models would be appropriate.

Seconding for Knights of the Raven. A simple color scheme and the badge is basically just a recolored Raven Guard, so should be very easy to do with regular transfers.

These are the decals. I would like to avoid a metallic scheme since there is a number of IW, GK and Mech players in my game club which all spot similar schemes for their army. Same reason why I would like to avoid a green scheme since many play DA.

As you can see the transfers are clearly DA, BA, UM and SW themed, with some sparkling of IF. The squad specialty symbol is mostly white.

So, this narrows the choices a bit. I guess I have to go for one of the UM successors who use the Ultima as their chapter symbol.

Sons of Orar, if you're up for freehanding red over the decal (coloring inside the lines, basically).

Storm Warriors may allow you to use the squad symbols, and have a relatively simple chapter badge to freehand.

Storm Giants are perhaps even easier than Storm Warriors.  Squad symbols should be directly usable, and the chapter symbol is just a red lightning bolt.

If you want to hate life, the white skulls under battlefield role for Blood Angels on the newest sheets could allow you to do Mortifactors.  You'd need 1 sheet per 6 guys, but with the amount of marines in your club (with none of them BA) it sounds like you could beg around for them.  That's not as much trouble as the painting will give you, though.

I was going to suggest something similar if the decals only had UM chapter symbol. I think it would be okay to do a variation on their paint scheme. Do the pauldron trim as the company color and do the interior space red so it works with white symbols. Basically red Ultramarines with an upside down Chapter symbol... or right side up? An actual omega, rather than stylized U.
