Bergje1984
Hi painters! About 2 years ago I got back into 40K after about a 10 year break. I figured it would be a good idea to start a Sons of Horus themed 40K army, but after finishing up on a couple of units I figured out that this isn't exactly 'tournament legal' and that 'Horus Heresy' had become a thing. Again, I stopped playing during 4th/5th and at that time this wasn't really a problem. I quickly rerolled to 40K, painted up an Imperial Fist and an Emperor's Children army and had been quite content gaming with that until the Horus Heresy 3.0 box landed. I figured I still had some Horus Heresy squads in foam-statis somewhere in my closet, and that this could be a great opportunity to either expand a bit or start a new Horus Heresy army. I opted for the second choice and start a Death Guard army, using the Saturnine box-set as a start. I figured that the MKII Tactical marines would be a great match for this legion, and if I'd sprinkle some MKIII in there as well I'd end up with a nice looking army quite fast. I have played a total of 0 Horus Heresy games, but the lore is amazing and I love painting :D So time for a new challenge. I've started assembling the Tactical Marines and the Terminators, but I'm a bit slow as I have no idea what's actually good gear in this edition of HH. I figured I'd turn 10 of the 30 Tactical Marines into veterans, give them the disintegrators, and do as much magnetizing as possible. Any advice on loadout/gear is greatly appreciated! My previous Sons of Horus army. Firedrake Cordova
Your previous Sons of Horus army looks nice. I like the use of weathering on their feet to tie them into the environment of their base In terms of model-count, it reminds me of 2nd Edition 40K armies Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/386449-horus-heresy-saturnine-death-guard/#findComment-6126853 Share on other sites
Bergje1984
Thanx Cordova! :D It's a small army, but I figure if I add some tanks etc it should grow to something playable quite fast. I think Horus Heresy armies in general are quite weathered down, filled with chipping and grime and this makes them an excellent candidate for some weathering powder trickery :P I unfortunately never played 2nd, I believe I started at the golden age of 4th edition :P But I really do like the bigger squad sizes a lot. In standard 40K it feels it's always like the standard is 5 or 10, it can become a bit boring Firedrake Cordova 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/386449-horus-heresy-saturnine-death-guard/#findComment-6126854 Share on other sites
Firedrake Cordova
Ah, I grew up with 2nd Edition - 2,000 points of Space Marines was roughly the size of your painted army. It made for some compact armies, but lacked the visual appeal of a large painted army on the shelf. Plus, Terminators had a 3+ save ... on 2D6 Edited August 8 by Firedrake Cordova Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/386449-horus-heresy-saturnine-death-guard/#findComment-6126858 Share on other sites
Bergje1984
Oh rlly?? That makes no money at all for GW :P I feel that every edition a 2000 pnts army keeps getting bigger and bigger haha! It looks cool, but my wallet hates me! It's hard to field an army now and not spend a cold €1000 on it. There are some exceptions like Custodes, but I feel for the local Ork player buying all his boyz at GW :P 3+ save on 2D6 is just silly :P Firedrake Cordova 1 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/386449-horus-heresy-saturnine-death-guard/#findComment-6126862 Share on other sites
Firedrake Cordova
Unbelievable, isn't it? As you say, big armies do look great in display cabinets. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/386449-horus-heresy-saturnine-death-guard/#findComment-6126875 Share on other sites

Bergje1984
THnx Badgers! I have just finished assembling the rest of the box, so I will be posting the Saturnine Dread, the Saturnine Praetor, the maul dude and the turret, later today! :D I ordered some resin bases online, so waiting for those to arrive before I assemble the feet, but I hope I can start painting up some MKII marines this weekend. I'm going to paint these up to a standard tabletop level, but as I've never painted up Death Guard before I'm still a bit torn between my painting approach. I want to paint all the non-centerpiece models with a simple recipe, and I hope I can achieve that with a light undercoat and add some washes/oils. The rest I will definitely spend more time on. As it's a Death Guard army it should be all right to not have a flawless paintjob, I've learned you can easily hide mistakes behind dirt/grime/battle damage. Bergje1984
So a small update, and most likely the last assembly update before I start painting ;) I've assembled everything as far as possible and 'SUB-ASSEMBLY' is the word :P > The MKII marines are separated in bodies, shoulderpads and heads. > The Saturnine Praetor is seperated pretty badly until I receive his resin base, so I can position the feet, and then the torso+arms in a good position > The Saturnine Terminators are well... lots of different parts still to be glued together. I have NO idea on what's a good loadout for these guys, so I'm considering just magnetising the arms instead of just letting Jesus take the wheel > The turret has so big chunky parts and seems fairly easy to paint > The Centurion is not completely glued yet, so I can still reach everywhere > The Saturnine dread is a frickin' beast! Same with the Praetor; waiting for his resin base to arrive so I can position his feet/arms perfectly, but seriously looking forward to painting this guy up. So as I wait for the bases to arrive I think I'll be starting with undercoating some these models ;) Tactical Marines and Vets are up first! Bergje1984
Time for a quick test-marine... So this is my progress for today, and I'm quite ok with it. It still needs a lot of work, but so far so good! The white and green is done with Vallejo Xpress paints, but I've also used some oil paints for the dirt and grime everywhere. When zooming in you always notice a lot of things you haven't noticed before, so I still need to clean up a lot, finish the bolter, the backpack, fix the visor, highlight the gold, wash the metals, start on the boltpistol-case, etc etc etc... Good thing is though; it's not a really complicated recipe and I think I'll be able to get about a squad done in an evening if I push myself a bit Marshal Mittens, Dr_Ruminahui, Rusted Boltgun and 3 others 3 3 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/386449-horus-heresy-saturnine-death-guard/#findComment-6127208 Share on other sites
Procrastinate
Looks great, a full squad will look even better. They all having the resin bases? Which ones did you go for? Shard of Magnus
Test marine looks good! The oil paints definitely reinforces the death guard vibe and will help them pop visually. The red OSL glow on the lower visor rim looks a bit off with the zoomed in view. This might be what you meant about fixing the visor too. The red is extending too far down the face plate for me; my mind isn’t expecting the glow to reach those areas given the angle of the face plate. It probably isn’t noticeable at table top arms length either. As you said, zoom highlights a lot of things you wouldn’t notice otherwise. Myeh, I think so as well! I'm still trying to figure out exactly how I want to paint them, but squads always look cooler :D I bought the Saturnine Urban Rubble set from Unreal Wargaming Studios. I have more of my armies on their bases and it's great quality! 3 hours ago, Shard of Magnus said: Test marine looks good! Thanks man! :D Yeh, when I saw the picture I also did not like the OSL glow at all, so I got rid of it. Still got a lot of cleaning up to do, but I think we'll get there :D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/386449-horus-heresy-saturnine-death-guard/#findComment-6127316 Share on other sites
Bergje1984
Yesss! Got my bases and went straight to work on all the Saturnine patterns! I finished assembling the subassemblies for the Dreadnought, the Terminators and the Praetor. Next step; undercoating dark grey and firing up the airbrush! Bergje1984
So now lots of undercoating... I figured I'd just get the worst out of the way and undercoat the 30 MK2 Marines + 10 MK2 vets. Because I'm painting the heads and the shoulderpads seperate it takes quite some time before everything is fully coated. I used the Standard Mechanicum Gray from GW as a coat, which I don't really like coz it's hard to see if everything is covered and after that strong Zenethil highlights on 40 MK2 marines. My airbrush clogged up halfway, cleaned it... called it a day :P W.A.Rorie, Tallarn Commander and Rusted Boltgun 3 Back to top Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/386449-horus-heresy-saturnine-death-guard/#findComment-6127972 Share on other sites
