You thought it would be a Defiler, but it was me, Mutilator!

This new set of three Mutilators will be coming to a shelf near you within a few months or so – alongside Kravek Morne, and this mysterious ‘Eye of Terror’ book that we know so little about. Will there be more to see from the forces of Chaos before the Iron Warriors launch their campaign against the Imperium? Our prognosticators say “yeah probably”.

Like the look at them, but they look short? Maybe? I wish for the last cinematic photo they would've put a legionaire in there or something for a comparison. Like the armor design they chose, very siegey

They definitely have a squat look to them, especially compared to Obliterators. I know Mutilators pre-date Centurions, but they were the first thing that came to mind.

As you say, I'd expect they'll look better in-person and next to other, smaller models rather than in isolation - especially when GW's photography is rarely flattering.

Also they looks cool, and maybe gm makes obliterators using same bodies?

I think these are designed to go alongside the current Obliterators. The old Mutilators looked quite poor next to them but these ones look much better.

This one post has simply sold me that helbrutes need to go away since mutilators and Obliterators are not far off the same size, look better and fill the same roles.

Come on. You can’t not have dreadnoughts! They’re a classic!

as for the mutilators - I think they look pretty good, but their armour’s design cues are a bit eclectic, which sorta makes sense but it also makes them look a bit… thrown together, as it were?

Just need to make Hellbrutes as big as they appear in modern lore.  The ones in SM2 are huge compared to what we have for the tabletop.

These Mutilators are pretty meh though.  Talk about boring sculpts.

I figured it out. They just look like big guys wearing boxes and aprons, with sharp things rammed into their wrists.

That's not the same as a heavily armoured brute of a warrior fused to their armour and weapons via warp virus, fluidly changing their armaments as they desire.

They missed the memo imo and made fat skin terminators.

I suppose the risk you run going too far that way is do they just look like big Possessed at that stage?

The problem I have with them is they look too... designed? Rather than the remnants of a suit of armour bloated and stretched far beyond it's original form by the twisting power of Chaos, perpetually shifting and warping, they just look like big armoured guys with some biomechanical parts. They're an improvement over the older models but they're not quite the ticket. For me at least.

They look better than the previous iteration, obviously, but something's definitely lacking. For what they are (heavily mutated, warp-infused close combat morphing monstrosities), they feel oddly restrained. There's an appropriate level of detail and chonkiness that I appreciate, but that aside they're kind of bland. Half the weapon arms just seem to be "fleshy nub with a blade/blunt object embedded into it". I feel like they could've gotten a lot more creative with those and the bodies themselves too.

Probably, but whereas the possessed have explicitly fleshy growths and appendages and mouths all over etc. Unlike the modern oblit/mutilator sculpts I'd have gone with more of the "armour has tendons and is clearly dribbling/gooey" look they attempted last time.

Possessed = fleshy fleshy and oblit strains = liquid fleshy behaving metal

They are obviously a clear improvement over the previous ones, but that is an extremely low bar. I think this sort of fleshy bits mixed with armour remnants and tech some chaos models have going on pretty universally looks bad and these are no exception. It would probably look significantly better were the flesh and armour painted the same colour though, but still not great design.

Luckily there are now lovely new Saturnine kit for people to use as better looking Mutilators and Obliterators.

These are nice. But what will they show when the Eye of Terror is announced? Could we possibly get Perturabo?

Nothing, the book will be announced on a Monday. I imagine a week after the defiler.

The preview in late March will necessitate it being out of the way so they can show off a sick marines vs orks CGI trailer for 11th.
