Well it finally happened; a real Space Elf Pirates release. I ran the FW Corsairs list back when, and have long maintained that my Drukhari aren't actually Commorites but rather denizens of a large expanse of shattered Webway.

Anyway, been missing a consistent posting habit for painting motivation on here since Call to Arms etc., and having splurged on the launch box I figured I'd start a WIPlog for these 20 infantry, 2 characters and skimmer.

So far:

Got 5 on foot converted to Darkweb Reapers in the pipe as well this week...

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.

They're through the ugly stage!

The Cult of the Golden Skull - I guess the Corsairs found an Exarch helmet (the Golden Skull), and the last survivor of a ship's Kindred put it on a few centuries ago instead of leaving the fleet to follow the Path of Sorrow... Sole survivors now join the Cult instead of joining other Kindreds as way of cleansing their skeins and temperaments in the cold fury of the Reaper's Path.

There's another guy with Autarch's reaper launcher I converted to count as a death jester a couple years ago, so with these 4 I'll have a legal unit to throw in a falcon. This is the first unit without the corsair orange in the army too... I was halfway through painting them when I realized it's basically just the classic scheme for TMNT Shredder. Still more gold details and clean up to do, but working out pretty well.

What do you want to see next? Starfang, 'Deepweb Dragons', or Skyreavers?

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.

future units.

mos def, dear colleague - this recent batch is the continuation of no small number of historical units. It's my original Drukhari scheme, and also my 7th ed. Mymeara-era Corsairs scheme, and my Idoneth scheme, and now again my Anhrathe scheme... When I was doing my Idoneth it sunk in that it is pretty much a 'The Little Mermaid' scheme, or more charitably perhaps, Miami Dolphins. Anyway, it ain't going anywhere...

More WIPS!

pretty close now:

Also realized yesterday that these guys are clearly in the Hawkeye lineage, and it made me like the scheme that much more:

large.Goldskull_2b.jpg.432ba2033c6995ee5

The robes are looking alot better after some Carroburg Crimson and final highlights - especially fond of far right here:

large.Goldenskull_4rWip.jpg.d79be6ff73b3

And now, back to the Dolphins new quarterback, having thrown the ball precisely when the portents aligned:

large.Kharseff_Wip1.jpg.3dc21108dd165521

Still a good bit of work to do on the Big Hat Dreamer, but an admirable start:

large.Kharseff_wip2.jpg.10af143d0ba72239

Anyway - next update when these first 10 are all based and complete! I'll try and find the 5th Reaper for next update as well cuz she's a nice little kitbash based on a Scourge body.

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.

Really like your color choices

I feel bad for that Void Dreamer now.....NFL Concussion Protocols are in his immediate future.....

Hoped to post earlier in the week, but it was not to be...

Anyhow - first tranche is based!

large.Pirates_T1_Based.jpeg.ed6e38e59837

I forgot to track down that fifth Reaper, but hopefully next week. I'm trying to push through on this beauty for a game next weekend:

large.SFang_Wip1.jpeg.224155cfb7635841b4

It's definitely in a bit of an ugly phase, but it's going pretty quickly... despite the fact of needing to paint the sides in the blue tac.

I also couldn't pass up the extra gubbinz in the kit so I bodged this together... it was a 'venom' from back before that kit was released. It was a secondhand rescue at the time so not ALL of the think paint is my fault. In fairness it was more than 10 years ago, and I still don't hate it enough to fully strip:

large.Vyper_Wip1.jpeg.913579813a873d6c7a

Lance / EML ftw! Feels like it's gonna be even more spicy once its suppression rule stacks with cover : )

I'll post again when the Starfang is assembled.

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.

Tabletop readiness achieved! Lock S-foils in attack position!

large.VFang_WIP2.jpeg.619bf472473eb458dd

Kinda wanna revisit the racing stripes to add some additional interest by way of a wave motif, but likely going to move one with other things this week.

large.VFang_WIP3.jpeg.3b7e715d8e0a8824b8

The new one is obviously quite a bit larger than the old one, but I like the old one well enough after this bit of spit and polish.

Thanks for looking!

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.

Game with the army ytday let me grab this:

large.goldskull_det1.jpeg.3b9e8c246cdb78

I'm going to go back the to one on the left and bend it over to my Gold Skull Cult for sure.

Also grabbed these of some other stuff in the army:

Next Steps - The Voidblaze Kindred

large.Voidblaze_WIP1.jpeg.fd7345524a663d

Planning on running guy in the middle as a Dragon Axe Exarch and then possibly even an Autarch there as well so they can actually crush something on a charge from time to time ; )

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.

Voidblaze Kindred is nearing the end of the ugly stage:

large.CorDrakes_WIP2.jpeg.7124eb254eded2

Since I started doing pink under orange it has definitely felt at times like I should just lean into the pink for the final product, but then every time I put the orange on it just feels so good. Hoping to knock these most of the way out by Sunday, but clean-up after the Contrast coat which is next might take more than I envision...

In sum I'm aiming for ~May 17 for this little 23-model warband to be complete.

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.

A weekend's painting later and I'm pretty stoked on these esoteric destroyers:

large.Voidblaze_Wip3.jpeg.8d943d55d1e84e

Little more work to pick out filigree, and considering some red/yellow blending on orange to up the 'smoldering' factor, but these are getting close.

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.

What a great colour scheme! They're great. I was thinking of getting the Eldar Corsairs box (either Combat Patrol, or the larger one - whatever it's called).

While I probably could Google this question, I'll go ahead and ask you: are the kits nice to work with? I mean, are they easy to assemble by modern GW standards, or are they a mess? (my worst experience was putting a Redemptor Dreadnought together). I don't know much about Eldar kits but these all appear to be completely new sculpts, right?

Yes and no. They are thin enough that there's not much of the 'interlocking squiggles' you sometimes get for marine torsos or legs, but the sprue layout on the Voidscarred at least is a nightmare because it's 3 sprues to cram in all the extra weapons and specialist kit, and very little of it is sequential on the sprue. Everything fits clean once you put it all together tho. Then of course there's ALL THE CAPES, which complicates the painting, plus the factor of seemingly endless streamers and strapping and filigree, to say nothing of all the gems. If you're a weirdo like me you can't help but do the fabrics and capes mostly in the off colour which looks good in the end, but does add time.

The skyreavers are thankfully simpler because of limited options and smaller number per kit (5), plus no capes! There's little interference between the jet packs and the back of the minis, and only 40% of them ever cover their chest with guns, so that kit is much faster and cleaner overall than the base infantry, strangely. The flipside of the complexity on corsairs is that you get out what you put in. If you take the time and effort, they really reward you at the end of the day.

The new vyper was good, but I'm glad I did it in sub-assemblies because otherwise you'd never be able to paint all the way around almost any part of it satisfactorily. It was feeling like it was about to become a bit of a slog, but at that point I just finished the build and spent a couple hours refining some of the most important parts, and it was rather suddenly 'done enough'.

Kharseth is a pretty conventional character mini, but with a cape over a cloak there are some tough parts, plus on the back there's another instance of 'a bunch of streamers dangerously close to the cape' which takes a deft hand.

Average rating  7/10 'nice to work with'; voidscarred 6/10, vyper 7/10, skyreavers 8/10.

Other than the base infantry, but those are from 2023, so basically yes.

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.

Thank you for the exhaustive response and review. Your post inspired me to revisit these Corsair Eldar boys and gals and I've been quite surprised that the bunch of Eldar troops in the box are the repackaged Corsair Voidscarred Kill Team that I've been too late to buy, but which I found to be a cool collection of minis. On top of that, seeing your vibrant and fun scheme, I think I just might pull the trigger on either the whole Combat Patrol box or at least the Elder troopers - just to try something else.

Sheesh, this thread did a way better job than GW in pushing their products.

Once again: thanks!

I have to move on. Still some details and things I'd clean up as always, but quite happy with these now they've got the extra gold details:

large.Voidblaze1_WIP4.jpeg.cadbeb6f8275f

large.Voidblarch_WIP4.jpeg.681fd38d72a19

In terms of what's next, though, I'm taking a slight break from the orange and teal to go red and black on last night's Inquisitor Kroyle conversion:

large.Kroylish_WIP1.jpeg.010ec2f74a8c8c5

Yes, that is a pilfered Exitus rifle, and yes, it's been in my bits box for more than 15 years. Finally, a sniper character worthy of the name. Doesn't hurt that he will match up well with the other ladybug riders I've been proxying as Serberys Raiders in my AdMech Scavs army.

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.

The time has come for the obligatory Yriel conversion:

large.Corsair_Prince_WIP1.jpeg.580fa4be7

I couldn't bring myself to put the actual Yriel and Iyanden banners on the back, so if this is the extent of the conversion, I think it'll look good. However, I also feel like the spear is missing something. I'm leaning choice 'A', or 'E'. Any Frater have a strong opinion?

large.CorsairPrince_Blades.jpeg.1e309cdc

Next, I tweaked Kharseth enough and am happy enough with it that I'll share these as well:

large.Khar_WIP2.jpeg.4e5ea9f5bbe46497453

large.Khar_WIP2R.jpeg.9cd6945712aafdc08e

large.Khar_WIP2L.jpeg.7886c6fa36e97322b0

Also dug these up recently. I really like the conversions in general, but I'm thinking to do head swaps and repaint the scheme from Ulthwé to pirates to run them as 'Banshees'. The idea behind the unit is they are basically a unit of mirror-shielded duelists. Having acquired some of the bits above and others after making this little squad when the Guardians came out, I'm also considering some further weapon and arm swaps on them to make sure they all have an obvious 'esoteric power weapon'. I like the whip and the sabres, but the spear and the chainsword + flail one will get a change-up. Writing all this I think I'm like 90% there for the spear to get the halberd above and the chainsword to get an unused Shining Spear paragon sabre.

The Good Doctor.

Love your Karseth.

As for the spear, how do you intend for him to be holding it?  Without knowing that, its hard to opine as I don't have a good idea on your intent for it.  That said, "E" is probably my least favourite as it seems both too chaos and fantasy battles for me.

It was a simple blade swap, so he'll be holding it just like the regular version. I went with 'A' in the end obviously; couldn't resist a pirate captain with boarding hook. I was slightly concerned that I'd need to lose the streamers on the haft, but they made it alright. Right now the whole thing is in pieces so I don't break my brain painting under the cloak, though... I'll post pics in a couple days when he's all assembled.

I'm thinking lotsa gold on him and he'll be 'The Gaudy Prince'.

Fair. Being flamboyantly evil is core to the army identity tbf - my Corsairs are much closer to Drukh than Asur, since that's the book they started in with the 5th relaunch. When I first built them the colours were a way of brightening and thus toning down the pure horror of Commorite vibes. So they may be 'indifferent' as eldar, but they are definitely still evil to humans.

Cheers,

The Good Doctor.
