A.T.
Rockatansky So much for the perimeter guard, if they weren't dead already the commissars would see that they soon were. Look busy, look like you are going somewhere before some enterprising officer decides that the best defense is a charge across the landing fields towards anything that is shooting back. Lysimachus
Molina dropped into a crouch as soon as he heard the first explosion. He hustled across to take cover behind a stack of heavy crates that separated the firing yard from the landing field. Behind him, he heard running feet and then Roly dropped into cover beside him. Cal could see the insurgents rushing in towards the row of precious transport aircraft, and had to wonder how the enemy had managed to penetrate their defences so easily. No time to stop and think about it now. He raised the borrowed m.36 and fired a volley into the mass of approaching bodies. Mazer Rackham
Rockatansky: 'That man! You there!' bellows Jekyll. 'Can you pilot that?' He points to a clutch of Sentinels which have been stripped for parts, and converted into a lading maniple. One does, however, in addition to the lifter clamps, have a heavy stubber mounted on the very exposed cabin which a second person could operate. The pilot crash seat is protected by what looks to be metal sheets trussed about the roll cage with jubilee clips. This is the one which Garrison Sergeant Major Jekyll indicates. What it lacks in armour, it makes up for in character. If...that's a euphemism for thick rust and chipped paint. A.T.
Rockatansky Too slow, damn it. A tap of the forelock to the officer lest his enthusiasm draw reprimand after the action as he clambered aboard. Barely a half step behind was Goose, missing since landing likely in some card game or similar scheme his sudden arrival gave suspicion that the man may have pointed him out, how else would Jekyll have known to pick him out from the rest. Max knew that it wasn't even battle lust that drove him just an insatiable boredom that somehow inexpiably hadn't gotten either of them killed over the years. Already idling the sentinel did not fight his control but the counter-weight caused it to move sluggishly. Peering through the gaps in the improvised armour he looked for anything not filled with ammunition or promethium that could be hauled along as improvised cover in the advance. Edited July 2 by A.T. Mazer Rackham
Rockatansky: As you manoeuvre the walker, you see a section of plasteel barricade which is not connected or plascreted to the ground. Usually put up to block off a road, here it forms part of an impromptu 'fence' as it were, to divide up the space into work zones. It could be easily carried by your loading forks. GM: This will give you formidable (AP 14) to the front facing, but will impose Difficult (-10) Operate Tests to move the Walker. The benefit of your improvised canopy is that if you get any grenades into your cockpit, and you fail to Evade, roll a D10. on a 7, 8, 9, or 10, the bomb bounces/falls out and will resolve against the walker's armour instead. Trokair
Por The sudden confused bustle of the Little Men was as much a warning as the fire and smoke in the distance. Por just stood there, trying to gauge where the enemy was and see over the heads of the soldiers running here and there. Sometimes being tall was an advantage, but he knew it could also be fatal, so he did not linger to long and soon crouched down as he moved over to the makeshift cover of the creates, picking up his Ripper Gun where he had put it down while working. Mazer Rackham
Pridbor: The situation is indeed confusing. You witness men and women in Imperial uniforms of the support services, plumber boilersuits, wagon loaders, and even those you might recognise as 'Friend-Civilians' those locals who have been checked by the authorities and found worthy of helping the Emperor. Yet here they are, wielding the Emperor's guns, cutting down his servants and soldiers. This is madness, surely? Who can tell who the enemy is? Where is the enemy? What are they doing over there with the flying machines? Thankfully, you are not blind to who your allies are. The Little Men wearing the Emperor's uniform like yours are similarly confused, but none of them shoot at you, not even by mistake. These Little Ones make things very complicated some times. Perhaps, if you concentrate and listen very hard, you might be able to hear Jarrow shouting through the noise. Surely he would have an idea what was going on? GM: I'll allow you to try and roll on Perception for your Comrade here. On a success, Por 'gets it' one way or another, and realises the score. You could portray this as one of the Little Un's sharing your barricade as shouting to you. Mazer Rackham
The Landing Fields: As you advance to close action with the enemy, you get a better picture of what is happening. It is not an organised force, but small skirmish pockets of insurgents who must have infiltrated the base in the guise of workers, or perhaps killed the real workers when they left the bastion for whatever reason. Whilst disjointed, it becomes clear they have a single objective per unit, and mean to execute it at the cost of their lives in order to preserve the Dominate. They fall as you cut them down, the Recidivists buying time for their comrades with desperate charges, gambits and loose volleys of covering fire. They are not exceptionally well trained - but their motivation is superior. As they fall their comrades return fire, dropping the soldiers unlucky or foolhardy enough to find cover in time. Above the landing fields, Valkyries and Transporters desperately swerve; 'waved off' by the controllers and landing crew left standing, perilously wielding nothing but lumen-beacons to guide the pilots. These too are gunned down in turn, the enemy armed with captured M36 lasguns and a medley of shotguns and single-action slugthrower rifles. The initial Imperial panic is dying down as the threat is gauged, but even then, another Valkyrie goes up from a lunatic mistiming his demo charge, and blowing himself, and the assault carrier all to hell in another violent crunch of noise and fire. More of the insurgents dart forward with big satchels, and whilst the door-gunners in the Valkyries cannot get an angle, they are shot in turn. Lysimachus
Cal nodded to Roly, doing his best to stay calm even as his heart began to race. “Ignore the ones at the back. A.T.
Rockatansky If the attackers had any sense it would not be the landing fields but the supplies that were their true target, promethium and ammunition that would normally be guarded but at a time like this who could tell if the posts had stood firm. As the sentinel moved the barricade it carried drew a second benefit as guardsmen seeking shelter ducked in behind it as they might an advancing tank, perhaps they would be less eager if they knew where he was headed. Trokair
Por Several soldiers gathered nearby, making use of the cover and the Ogryn to organise themselves. Por glanced at them for a moment, noted Fifth Platoon insignia and a mishmash of squad markings, he knew a few by sight he thought. His attention however was still on trying to locate the enemy amongst the confusion. Someone taped him on the back as the temporary squad formed up and, taking positions as a sergeant gave out orders. The tap, Por did not need to turn around to know Jarrow was covering his blind spot. To the left several guardsmen raised their lasguns in the same direction, they had spotted something. Shifting to bring the Ripper to bear in the same direction Por took in the scene, yes there, armed little men moving unsoldiery like, but more organised than the general milling that was all around. Mazer Rackham
The Landing Fields: The fusillades coming in left and right topple the assailants like ninepins. Brave to the point of foolhardy, for their cause, the Severans die. It is quite a significant coup for them to have even managed this in the heart of the enemy bastion, and perhaps it has done nothing much to the inexhaustible materiel of the Imperium, but the Dominate is canny indeed, and what it cannot make up for with flesh and lasbolts, it more than makes up for in psychological damage. A few Valkyries is nothing, but the air of paranoia and suspicion which is held at every rank in the guard will now ratchet up a notch. Heads will roll, maybe better ones than order it, but that is in the future, and too far up the food chain for you now. Gunning down the enemy from both flanks, the Imperials march behind the walker clutching the barricade. Jekyll is beneath it, grinning and bawling. 'Good thinking, pilot! I must remember your initiative!' He gathers the men about him, and launches out from behind the armoured plodder. 'CHARGE!' Across the landing fields, and the Miradoran bivouac, Lieutenant Saavedra drops into Por's fighting position. He pats the giant Orgryn soldier on the burly muslces of his left arm. 'Good work, Pridbor. Can always count on you.' He draws his bolt pistol and chainsword. 'Shall we join the Sergeant Major? Alright men, stay close to me and Pridbor, and try not to trip over your own feet! Charge!' GM: Resolve melee or ranged attacks as you prefer, but one way or another this will finish them off. I will tot up the Mag Dam inflicted here and also do some BTS rolling to determine how much damage this attack has cost the Imperium. Lysimachus
What? Charge? What kind of idiot was this Sergeant? They had superior weapons and the enemy was already going down in droves. Why would they give up their advantage at range and go in close where the foe could use knives… or blow everyone to hell together with those satchel IED's? Cal wasn't stupid enough to risk ignoring the order altogether - that was a good way to end up in front of a firing squad yourself! - but he wasn't going to drop his gun and charge in like an animal either. “Roly, move and fire! Flank them, support the charge!” Then he dashed out from behind the crates, moving around what was left of the rebels without actually getting any closer and firing his lasgun wildly. Mazer Rackham
The Landing Field: The haphazard - and rather risky - charge, combined with the support fire, and the burly bulwark of a charging slab of Abhuman muscle, pays off. Jekyll's intention becomes evident as the soldiers close with the recidivists, since Jekyll had not ordered bayonets fixed, and as the Guardsmen kick, thump and club the enemy, the Garrison Sergeant Major can be seen gripping men by the arm and directing individuals. He wanted prisoners. Many of your shots go wild, but they help to corral the would-be insurgents. A satchel charge does go off in an act of sheer desperation, maybe even despair, but by then things look like they are slowing down. The impetus and advantage of surprise ebbs, and now the professionals' training and discipline proves it's worth. Some of the Severans are killed outright by close-range shots, others crunched by an Ogryn's fist, but several are subdued and pinned down, shouting profanities and derogatory dogma against the men and women now beating them. Jekyll chins a particularly gobby example, who has been giving orders. Instinct led the GSM to the head of the pack, and now he kicks the man in the crotch, and looks around. 'Medicae! Medicae! Get over here, we need this one alive!' With the leader disabled, and several of their number dead or subdued, the raiders break up, and scatter into the walls of the keep, of engineerium bunkers. The Guard follow them in, shooting first, disinfecting the hovels with grenades before following up. This pathetic protest is over. GM: This particular brawl is done, but you can hear the shooting and shouting carry on. Smoke rises from one of the anti-air turrets on the South bastion. It is difficult to see immediately what the Severans materially accomplished...
