The store Manager the shop I went to had no idea what the new plans were, but was really happy the free model of the month was over.

 

He said it's hard talk one on one and get people into the hobby, when you have 150 people rushing in to grab a model and leave.

UK GW stores have been asking you to make the model in store, and you had to sit and wait for a spot if none was available - not that I ever seen that happen.

 

As with the previous time is money comment, it's a free £2-3 figure - the 10 people later in the line could just bunch together and buy a whole box and split them. Though I know in north America it's common to drive 2-4 hours for shopping etc, a special journey for this seems silly.

For 40K there will apparently be a Cadian guardsman, Chaos Legionnary, Necrno warrior, and I think the 4th was a Votann but it was so busy in the store I struggled to hear. For Sigmar, its a skeleton, chaos warrior, gutripper, and something else.

Its slightly a shame the mini of the month is going as thats whats helped me get abck in the hobby this last year due to my kids' interest, but with what the sotre maanger said about the above, I'm taking it that we "know what the next 8 months minis are" and will just space them out monthly, means I'll probably plan purchases better rather than buy in big chunks to get the coin every few months and then sit on bit too much of a pile of grey!

As explained to me, the models are only supposed to be given as part of an activity, say learning a new painting technique. You go in, practice your new technique on the model in the shop then get to take it home. I think the idea is to pick the most appropriate model for the activity you're learning/practicing. 

The guy did say they will be new models and different to the current intro models.

I think I have 7 minis of the month. My witch elf is a Silver Tower adventurer, my Lumineth Realm Lord is in my bits box because I thought it was a bit of a crap figure. My chaos chosen is now a kitbashed noise marine. My beastman, squat, chaos warrior and deathwing marine were all collected under the condition that I build them in store and enter them into the store MoM painting competition two weeks later.   I didn't win anything but I did catch covid19 one time.

I guess it’s primarily a footfall driver and it probably didn’t lead to many incremental sales; just people running in to grab a freebie.

 

Makes sense to shift to a format that is designed to drive better engagement with the store.
 

I feel they need to look at the format of the entire bricks and mortar estate because it should primarily be designed to facilitate new customers to the hobby. Existing customers and long term retention lies elsewhere….but the stores should be about introducing new people to the hobby, however, that’s not viable at scale with only one person working in each store (except the bigger ones). 
 

I remember with absolute clarity the introduction game GW Leicester did with me when I was less than ten years old, and that was nearly 30 years ago. Ultramarines vs Orks with a surprise entrance from the Legion of the Damned. I never stay long enough in a GW store to see if they still do experience like that still.

Seems like my early experiences also. My local store was maybe the smallest in the country and had maybe 6 staff, full and key timers. They ran amazing memorable games and had 20+ people in store all saturdays, who would inevitably buy stuff.

 

Stores are doing a bit better than one man shops like they used to have, but they need a bit more leeway to do cool stuff that teenagers will enjoy and get hooked.
