Yeah, I am underwhelmed. Would have hoped for either Auxilia or Mechanicum to get something, as Marine boxes are a dime-a-dozen and these are very clearly for new players/forces.

Given the nature of the army building and detachments in 3rd, there was an opportunity to do something a bit more daring but hey ho.

The contents of these aren't bad at all, but thankfully for my poor wallet neither are for me. I have more than enough marines in the pile of potential to be working on.

Like @Vassakov I had been hoping for Auxilia.

But for anyone looking to jump into Heresy in a big way, one of each of these is a great start.

Both are very solid cores to a marine army, if it weren't for the fact that I really do not need another Contemptor is probably be seriously considering the mkVI box tbh. Actually same with Cataphractii and the MKIII box. It's good for my wallet too as I just caved and got the new Tomb Kings so it really needs a break.

Neither of them really do anything for me but that's because MkIV is my primary mark and I have three Maximus Battle (No autocorrect, I'm tired but not Bagel) Groups to form the core of my force and  neither really offer what I'm after. If the MkIII had dropped the Tactical Squad for another Breacher Squad than I probably would have.

I don't think they're bad boxes though.

These seem much better ways to start a Heresy army than the Saturnine box, although that's not saying much. If I was looking to start a (5th) Astartes force then I would be delighted to find one of these under the christmas tree, but I'm not, so I will save up my money and hope for the plastification of some more units in the future.

Which in my opinion is not a bad thing. There are no big surprises inside, but they seem to provide a useful combination of quite typical unit types (many of which have been seen in previous combo-boxes). I think either of these would make a more interesting starting point than the (in my opinion) somewhat eclectic contents of the HH 3.0 Saturnine boxed set.

However, if these are splash releases that will be around for only a short while, not many beginners will be able to benefit from them.

Love the box with the Breachers except I have a land raider new in box, dont really need another command squad or 20 marines. So breachers would be the only unit I was interested in. The other box is completely useless to me :( Oh well saves me a bit of money for whatever my next project is(thankfully I am working my pile of grey)

Decent boxes, if I didn't already have most of the stuff in it, I'd definitely pick up the Heavy Assault box

Also, something that I noticed (however small it actually is)

I really appreciate the box covers, and how the art team made them mirror each other with the Heavy Assault box attacking and the IF painted one defending a wall. Of course it's a small thing, but I appreciate it over the generic battle/scenery background

Easy yes, but no from me.

Would have been very tempted with a mk2 or mk4 box though. I guess GW think there would be too much overlap with the Saturn box for mk2, and mk4 recently had that assault(?) box that is still around in places.

More money for BF sales, I guess.

I have to admit not spotting it in the first place, but now that you mention it I have to admit that having the two boxes standing side by side so that the forces would be staring at each other could look quite impressive.

I am not very surprised by the choice of Mk 3 and Mk 6, since those are the oldest of the power armour marks in the current (2022- onwards) plastic range.

Horus Heresy boxes typically are quite infantry heavy, so I am not particularly surprised. That said, there could have been the opportunity to make one of them infantry heavy and the second one with some other focus.
