@kassil: thanks matey, i like being able to look through at my older stuff and see where its all come from, its like looking back at those 1st minis we all have kicking about and going "hot damn i improved" i have some of my 1st attempts at sculpting stuff kicking about and they are nothing short of eyesores, its all about practise and patience.

@talonatreyu: no problem dude, steal away!

ps: standing on rocks/random crap makes you 45% more epic than not.. fact.

see even moloc knows it. >.>

if his name is johno then sort of.. (it was actually a tactical squad that gimped his daemon prince :P )

im hoping to put the finishing touches to eidhart tonight and get the next member of the squad started.. but then what i hope and what actually happens are usually drastically different. :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Update time! (mainly because the apothecary finally arrived...)

first things first, the fw aptohecaries are really nice.. but their heads are not separate.. so butchery was done.

http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/139/9/f/apoth_by_typhion-d50am26.jpg

theres lots and lots and lots of work to be done on him, but im liking him so far.. decided that i'd make his armour all battered and grimdark. he's going to get a suitable amount of gore splash on him once hes done.. there also needs to be more contrast on him.. the weathering ended up lighter than id planned so i may have to poke about with a darker brown and some oil/rust streaks etc.

next we have the banner dude.. he's been through several heads at this point (he had mutton chops to begin with) i had to think quite hard about composition for him, ive given everyone in the squad a sword of some sort (most are sheathed "combat blades") because of the fangle fluff of their swords being spiritual focuses and the such.. but i needed him to be able to use his whilst holding the banner.. so he has calgars sword and a wrist mounted gun for added leftiness.

(the powder on his legs will be thinned out.. its too thick atm and needs to be sorted)

and finally we have a group shot of the new boys hanging with their boss and his champ.

http://th06.deviantart.net/fs71/PRE/f/2012/139/f/7/group_by_typhion-d50am4f.jpg

the head is intact, i doubt ill ever find a use for it, but its a nice piece so wanted to keep it unmangled (hard work)

the other two members of the squad that you havent seen yet (theyre on the left! :)) arent looking in the same direction.. one is more straight on and the other is looking to his right.. because i noticed they were all looking in the same direction when i was figuring out the apothecary. :)

i have however made sure every last one of them has their foot on something though!

my cameras battery is dead atm so no pics until tomorrow i guess, but once the squad is done ill be working on their rather lovely deimos rhino/razorback which is in keeping with my idea that despite the chapter having "fewer" relics due to their youth that they do have some.. ala khiros, the occasional different mark of armour and a few older tanks from the original training cadre.

Okay so apart from a coat of varnish (need to run some tests with new varnishes before i commit) Eidhart is complete.

and the rest are coming along nicely too!

http://fc02.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/142/6/2/bannerman_by_typhion-d50rknx.jpg

the banner will eventually have the fangle cross in the centre of the shield (broms heraldry) a psuedo nmm iron halo and aquilla too..

http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/142/b/7/shield_by_typhion-d50rkwl.jpg

this is one of the dudes ive not shown before.. yes claws are more effective & the same cost.. but they look lame.. so instead we have power weapon & storm shield dude.. he will have broms heraldry on his chest shield i think.

http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/142/2/c/hammer_by_typhion-d50rl8l.jpg

somewhat bad picture of hammerman.. he has lots of facial scarring and a shield on his back for added lame command squadness.. this lot are overpointed and rather pants in all honesty.. but hey ho.. his hammer is wonky, i shall fix that.

http://fc07.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2012/142/0/6/thecary_by_typhion-d50rlmw.jpg

need to add a little more depth to the white on this dude.. and sort out the flasks of crap etc.. but he's getting there.. essentially other than his head its all base colour stuff though.. regardless of weathering (experiment with hairspray)

i have until the end of the month to complete this lot as far as i remember which is why im actually doing something for once.. hopefully brom will be finished with them, once thats done i think their transport & the 2nd tactical squad will be put up for completion.. although download does kind've get in the way..

Hehe nerd crush, thats cool man its good to have people who appreciate my work.. The more people who like the Fire Angels the better, we're a bit of a poor mans chapter atm in terms of fan base.

Eidhart does have a bit of a sadist murdering psycho vibe.. but i wanted him to exemplify the ganger side of the fire angels which id neglected until him.. it was all noble houses and religion until he came about! :P hmm is it more terrifying for him to be an emperor worshipping psychopath or not....

Cheers guys

Yeah the power weapons are done with an airbrush, spray white, mask off one side, feather purple, feather black.. do same for other side with black where white is etc etc.. super easy as long as the paint is thin enough and yeah that is a hint of osl on the shoulderpad of the apoth, need to do a little on the pipe too to tie it together a bit more.

hoping to have the banner done tonight and more progress on the other dudes (skin is coming along nicely)

progress is slower than idve liked tonight.. but i will post something regardless.

need to smooth out the "iron halo" on the banner.. not happy with it & fix up some of the aquila too, then i can move on to finishing him off and getting onto the next member of the squad.

right first things first.. i do everything in my power to prime my faces with a really light grey or white.. if this isnt possible (attatched to model already and not able to be broken off) then getting a decent coat of deneb stone down will be a priority.. light base = thinner paint = less detail obscured etc etc.

okay so step one.. we have a white face (or aproximation of one) this is coated with a wash of dwarf flesh.. this is allowed to flow into the recesses and generally stain the face.. you can paint the face dwarf flesh at this stage but the was allows for a more mottled effect overall.

step two! (pictures from here on out)

wash the face with terracota in the same manner as you did with the dwarf flesh

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/1-1.jpg

stage 3:

this is essentially the first step of highlighting the face.. you are leaving the terracotta in the recesses and painting the raised areas with dwarf flesh

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/2-1.jpg

stage 4:

a mix of vallejo basic skintone and dwarf flesh is used to highlight the raised areas (elf flesh can be used instead of basic skintone.. im just slowly replacing all my gw colours with vmc ones)

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/3-1.jpg

stage 5:

a very fine highlight of pure vallejo basic skintone is applied, this is what i use to add in all the brow lines etc on most of my models.

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/4.jpg

stage 6:

a wash of german cammo black brown (Scorched brown) is put into the eye sockets and thinned out down the jaw lines. this serves as a backing colour to add depth to the eyes and also means that going back after you've done the white and correcting any mistakes is a little easier.

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/5.jpg

stage 7: (picture taken when wash was still wet)

i was a very VERY watered down liche purple over the face, this helps add a slightly more natural look to the skin.. when its dry..

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/6.jpg

stage 8: (see looks better dry)

we add in the eyes.. skull white + enough water for it to come off the brush with next to no pressure, if you need to reapply water and paint to the brush between eyes (and teeth) do it.. if it is too watery correct mistake with lots of water fast (then soak it up) let model dry, try again. (if its too dry you'll be forcing the paint onto the model which gives you less control)

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/7.jpg

stage 9:

paint in the pupils with chaos black.. i tend to find that doing this stage upside down helps with where the paint is deposited and how the brush acts.. again very thin paint is required and any mistakes can be rectified with water and if not, by covering with brown and then white.

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/8.jpg

that is essentially the face complete.. however if you want to add stubble, pick a hair colour (grey, brown, black etc) and wash with either badab black, devlan mud or really watered down codex grey.

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/9.jpg

hope that covers everything.. pics are a little grainy.. but i think that adds to the final pictures gritty grimdarkness :P
