Imperial Fists *Archamus wip and Land Raider complete*

Hi all,

My friends at my local gaming place have decided to start a Heresy era campaign, primarily using the Tempus Fugitives rules expansion Age of the Emperor. Having loved all the Heresy books and fluff, and considering we have a year to assemble our legions, I thought I might track my progress here for all to see. As some of you may know, I've already got Imperial Fists for 40k, so i thought why not do them for 30k as well.

At this stage, looking at the expansion, I'm going to start off with Sigismund's company and add in some line troops as well. After doing copious amounts of research all over the net, it appears to general consensus being that his company has his heraldry in the right shoulder pad, and the Imperial Fists heraldry in the left. Being that in the novel Mechanicum, Sigismund and the veteran companies retrieve mk4 armour, I thought that i'd mainly use mk's 4 to 6 with his company, and for troups use mk3 iron armour. Overall planning on having myb 2k worth of heresy era fists by this time next year, lets just hope it goes according to plan.

Anyways, first up I thought i'd have a go at the big guy himself. I've based him off Helbrect, and made sure it was a finecast model, as i needed to do a lot of drilling and grinding. Cut off and filed away the combi-melta, and took his head off, then replaced the areas with a Black Templar head, and an Empire shield with the appropriate motif. The back pack is the original with the exhaust cut off (they were malformed anyway) and replaced with second edition space marine fists, which I found someone else had already done on this board somewhere, so thanks to that person. Other than that is just simply some things tacked on to make him look like he is out for justice.

Any comments or improvements would be most appreciated.

Angle on the sword looks a little...off. Also, that empty hand wants for a bolter, or something.

The Templar iconography (belt, etc): was that already something Sigismund was doing during the Heresy himself? Or are you going to replace those icons as well?

Like what you've done with it, just trying to help by asking some pointed questions. The backpack is a nifty idea, whoever originally thought of it. Nicely done.

Thanks for the input frostclaw222.

As far as i'm aware, Sigismund had this heraldry since the Great Crusade. So was planning on leaving those icons.

I do agree about the sword, was hoping someone might help out and give me an easy way to bend it right, since its finecast resin, just pops back when I bend it.

Would that be hot water or boiling water? Might give the hot water a try.

As to the bionic arm, Sigismund didn't have one, but this is a new and improved portion of advanced armour, which needs extra stabilisers in order to effectively wield The Black Sword. At least that's what I'm going for at the moment.

Cool model. That's a shame the sword is so bent. If you can't figure out a good way to fix it, you could always cut off the blade and attach a different plastic blade (maybe the one from the commander kit or the command squad kit) to the handle. Would probably look fairly similar.

The best results that I've had with re-shaping Finecast is to have a container of cold water ready, then just run the affected part under hot tap water. It will soften enough to bend back to proper shape, then while its still soft, put it in the cold water while holding it at the proper angle.

The cold water tends to "freeze" the resin in place.

Hope that is helpful

@Reed Thanks for the kind words. That sword is really bugging me, and I might have to scrap it like you said if I can't fix it.

@Volfen Really good advice, and I put it into practice. Can't decide if it worked or not.

Had a go using the advice Volfen said, looks like it might have worked, but i'll let you decide, my eyes are playing tricks on me.

Any difference?

Thanks all for the advice so far, really appreciate it!

Clever use of the old gauntlets on the backpack. I like this model a lot, but to me it needs more "height". I always pictured Sigismund as just having so much of an aura being a central character. Still a very cool model, no doubt. <_<

@Natanael Good eye, tried the same method again, think it looks a little better now.

@Talthus Cheers! I kinda want it to be obvious that it is Sigismund on the tabletop without me explaining it.

@Darth Potato I know what you mean by the presence. I wanted to give him a little extra height which is why he is on that base, but not too much to seem outlandish. Compared to a normal marine, he is higher, so I might leave him like that. As for the gauntlets, I can't take credit for that, someone else on this board gave me inspiration for that.

@BattleBrotherJohn Thanks for the kind words! Depending if I need to alter anything else, might try him tonight. Looking forward to painting this guy.

@Marshal Sampson of Terra Thanks, took me awhile to find the right model (seems obvious now, but I went through quite a lot of prototypes). Quite happy with this guy at the moment.

Tried to reposition the sword again, but bending finecast to the right position for such a small piece is not easy. Let me know what you think.

As always, C&C are most welcome.

Looking at this again, are you totally sold on the sword? I mean it definitely fits the theme, but honestly I personally envisioned the Black Sword as BEEFY. Now I'm not necessarily recommending that you change it out for the existing Emperor's Champion model's sword, but perhaps the plastic Grey Knights may have an option? CLICKY!

Maybe to escape the force sword look you could use the existing crossguard to make it suitably Templar-esque. Just a thought. Please continue the marvellous work.

@AgnostosTheos Thanks, maybe your right, might be the angle.

@Talthus I can see what you mean. After looking at the sword and then at Sigismund himself, it does look a little weedy. Don't like the Grey Knight weapons to be honest, however the Emperor's Champion's sword does look quite beefy. Might look into getting that. Would you think that might look better?

It wouldn't look out of place, though IMHO it is a bit overused. But perhaps the Black Sword on GW's model is supposed to be similar to the one wielded by Sigisimund. Lets look at some options:

The Aformentioned model: If you were to paint it up similar to how it is painted on the box it could look pretty striking with Siggy's black and white heraldry along with his yellow armor.

Then we have this one

Could work. Maybe a little plain for Dorn's favored champion.

This one would require some more work.

The hilt might look nice with a Templar cross.

There's some more options for you...though the more I think about it the Emperor's Champion sword might be the best option.

The space marine champions sword I think looks a little plain IMO.

Do like the idea of the Sanguinary Guards power sword, a little more elaborate.

But yeah, since you've mentioned it, I can't stop thinking about the Emperor's Champion's sword.... just seems to fit for some strange reason. Can't think why...

And I do like how they've painted it, so I would do it somewhat similar.

Maybe I need to make another purchase...

I apologize for influencing you to spend money! :P I still think you should try to save the Templar crossguard on the existing model, though I don't really know if that is feasible with the Champ's sword.

P.s. Had a quick look at your gallery and suffice to say I cant wait to see him painted! You certainly have the skills!

lol thanks for the kind words. :P

Don't need to apologize for the money spending, I'd rather have a model I'm proud of than a model than one that I wish I went a little further with.

Although the cross guard looks cool, might have to scrap it in order for the Emperor's Champion's sword to fit well, we'll see when I get the model and cut the sword to fit.

Now I just need to wait for the mail to turn the Emp's Champ up...

Well while I wait patiently for Sigismund's sword to turn up, thought I'd plow ahead and resurrect an old land raider.

Used a fair bit of gubbins on him to make it more interesting, especially the Imperial Fists symbols and bag rolls.

Let me know what you think I should add or leave or take off.
