Painting Horus Heresy Alpha Legion

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!

I'm currently working on a Heresy-era Alpha Legion army but I'm struggling on how to paint them. I've tried about 3 different methods that I don't quite like fully (boltgun metal washed progressively with asurman blue and thraka green, orkhide shade layered with scaly green then hawk turquoise and glazed with leviathan purple, necron abyss highlighted up to snot green) as they haven't quite replicated the Alpha Legion scheme from the Horus Heresy books from Forge World. I've yet to try using the Tamiya clear method but I was wondering in the meantime if anyone has had any luck recreating the scheme with matt paints instead of metallics?

If anyone has any pictures to share they would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers

My colour recipe:

Hydra Blue:

1) Black Primer
2) Ironbreaker over it
3) Highlites with Runefang Steel
4) layers of Guilliman Blue until you have the right, strong blue tone
5) go over some of the highlites with very thined green glaze
6) last layer with Guilliman Blue over it

Yep, probably the best choice. Here's the link to the completion thread, which we designed to be an inspirational gallery in the first place.

Maybe make a shortcut by using a coloured metallic "phasing" paint? This is a cheap and nice acryllic paint I've just bought today and brought the pics to B&C to share with the loyal Alpha Legion warriors.

Would you be able to put some on a Mini? Because that stuff looks amazeballs but if it gets wonky once on a Marine...well...yeah..

I've put it on swords and it still looks amazeballs. Also put pearlescent white on a sword and washed with Cassandora. Also awesomesauce.

Just gotta gloss varnish it afterwards (it's matte after the wash on pearl and it's not water-resistant after it dries). Of course matte or satin varnish it on AL armour if you prefer, just ensure to protect it from water and all will be fine.

You got me at Pearlescent. Been trying to find a color like that for a while now. Where did ya get this stuff?

I painted up some Alpha Legion test models a while back, they came out pretty well IMHO. I did the following:

Prime Chaos Black

Heavy Drybrush Runefang Steel

Watered down wash of Vallejo Clear Blue across entire model

The next part is a little more personal taste... I used Vallejo Clear Green, watered down like the blue, and applied it to the upper 25% of all armor pieces, dragging up. Once this started to dry, I then used Vallejo blue again, starting at the line where I applied the green, and drag down. Each time I applied green (as it's lighter), I applied it slightly lower to achieve a good blend. It may take multiple layers, but I was able to successfully get the effect of color changing armor. It's fairly simple, just time consuming.

Artist supply shop, ask for pentart acryllics or equivalent.

If there's a pearl white version of that stuff, I might need to spend some cash....

Yep, there is, I got it. Expect to base with something like Rakarth Flesh, then layer with Pallid Wych, then use this. It does not coat underlying color well, the white pearl, but otherwise the effect is awesome.

Something like the Vallejo Metallic Medium might work better for this, where you could either mix the medium with whatever color you want, or brush it on after you've already put down the base color.

^^ That's totes what I've been playing around with for a couple weeks now. Vallejo metal medium is super entertaining.

This guy's greave is painted with Vallejo metal mixed with different levels of Vallejo blues for highlights.
