Colour testing
Hi folks.
Title says it all. Or pretend saying it all as it is far from being a full testing, being reduced to a single recipe. The purpose is therefore more about convincing myself than choosing between different options.
Convincing myself about??? About paint CSM in white. I do not play CSM in regular 40k but I own some sprues of CSMs I have recovered 2 or 3 years ago as part of the Nemesis Claw+Mandrakes Kill team bundle. And these lads were unassemblied until last Sunday: the weather was poor and I was in that dangerous combination of getting time + a clipper + some glue.
I therefore started doing some subassemblies, and then thinking about the paint job. I had bought a bottle of dark blue (Night Lords blue equivalent) and I was really keen on going that (traditionnal) way. But this Vallejo colour did not convince me that much in practice when used on other models. I was full of doubts, until I navigated through the HH book extracts that showed some NL liveries with some white: a chest plate, a knee pad or two... What about doing a complete white scheme? I would call the unit "Night ghosts". But there are so little example on a quick image search that I felt like I needed an intermediate step: convincing myself.
The step by step methof I have used is inspired by a SW quick and dirty method I saw on Heavy metal shorts :
- A Mechanicus standard grey base coat followed by an Agrax Earthshade wash

- Instead of Russ grey dry brush, I did a Ulthuan Grey dray brush. Followed by a Vallejo "blanco calavera" light dry brush

- Then some details with brass shaded with grey/black ink

A test model being not enough I did a second one, with more NL tidbitz:
I am not disappointed by the result. Even if I still have to wait for adding paultrons and characterisiticsal heads. This is when the auto-conviction process will reach completion. Will it be succesful?
See you latter, with more paints applied.
And may be a decision.
