Caligos Nyth, The Veilmaker

Head of the Whisper Host

No reliable record exists of Caligos Nyth's origin. Inquisition archives list him as dead on seventeen worlds, executed on three, and never present on dozens more where witnesses nevertheless swore to having seen him. Within the warbands of the Traitor Legions, few claim to know the Veilmaker personally, and fewer still agree on what he looks like. Some describe a veteran Legionary clad in battered Mk VI armor, his face forever hidden behind a featureless helm. Others insist Caligos Nyth is merely the latest identity worn by a far older Alpha Legion operative whose true name has been forgotten even by his own warriors.

As master of the Whisper Host, the Veilmaker sells his services to renegades, xenos corsairs, planetary governors, and ambitious warlords alike. His price is rarely measured in blood-gold alone. Stolen gene-seed, navigational data, prisoners, relics, and secrets are all accepted forms of payment. Those who hire the Whisper Host soon discover that their agreement extends only to the letter of the contract. Caligos fulfills every bargain precisely as promised, while often manipulating events to secure objectives known only to himself.

Under his command, the Whisper Host has become a nomadic force of infiltrators, raiders, and information brokers. Entire void-stations have vanished from orbit after accepting their protection. Naval convoys have been plundered by pirates who somehow possessed every access code and patrol route. Rebellions have erupted on worlds where no trace of Alpha Legion activity was ever discovered. In every case, witnesses offered different names for the architect behind the disaster.

The Veilmaker makes no effort to correct these contradictions.

To the Inquisition he is Caligos Nyth, Proteus Vhal, Akhelion, Typhon Sair, and a dozen more.

To underworld cartels he is The Broker of Masks, The Black Shade, or Meridion XX.

To pirate fleets he is The Quiet Prince, the Nether-Troll, Janus of Shadows.

To the Whisper Host he is simply The Veilmaker.

Whether these identities belong to one being, a succession of operatives, or a carefully maintained fiction is unknown. Perhaps even Caligos himself no longer remembers where the masquerade began.
