Phantom Coil

Infiltrator squad

Among the many hidden blades of the Whisper Host, none are spoken of with more unease than the Phantom Coil. Where other warbands’ squads may wage war through siege and slaughter, Phantom Coil practices a subtler art. Its warriors are not conquerors, but intruders. They specialize in entering places believed secure, embedding themselves among their enemies, and transforming certainty into doubt. By the time the first shot is fired, the battle has often been won for weeks.

Operating in small autonomous cells, pairs, and even individuals, the Phantom Coil infiltrators are masters of disguise, clandestine reconnaissance, and surgical violence. Worlds marked for plunder may host their agents for months or even years before the Whisper Host and their patrons arrive. Dockworkers, enforcers, mercenaries, ship officers, and rebel leaders have all unknowingly served the squad's designs. Entire planetary defense networks have collapsed because a single Phantom Coil operative had patiently assumed the identity of a trusted administrator decades earlier.

Their favored armor is ancient Mk VI Corvus plate, modified for stealth and covert operations. Cloaked in darkened mantles and equipped with suppressed weaponry, they strike from forgotten accessways, maintenance tunnels, and void-breached corridors. To witnesses, the Legionaries seem to emerge from shadow itself, appearing only long enough to eliminate a target before vanishing once more.

Even among the Whisper Host, Phantom Coil maintains a reputation for secrecy. Individual operatives employ dozens of identities, and many answer only to codenames. It is said that some members have inhabited their disguises for so long that they can no longer distinguish the role from the warrior beneath. Whether this is a necessary sacrifice or an intended consequence is a question only the Veilmaker can answer.

Imperial intelligence reports concerning Phantom Coil are notoriously contradictory. Some claim the squad numbers barely a dozen Legionaries. Others insist there are hundreds scattered throughout the sector. Both assessments may be correct. Both may be false.

A warning recovered from a compromised Arbites data-vault is often cited by those few who have survived an encounter with the squad:

"If you discover Phantom Coil markers within your walls, then the Phantom Coil has already completed its mission. The only remaining uncertainty is whether you were the true objective or a secondary target."
