A hard reset on my pile of shame

I got back into 40K 10th edition after a break during 8th and 9th. Life happened - you know how it is!

When I came back, it's safe to say I got a bit too excited buying new models. I had over 3000 points of Primaris Space Marines in a nice, juicy pile ready and waiting. I had such good intentions - I really was going to paint and play with them all, however as time went on and my rate of painting stayed at it's traditional slow pace, those models started to feel like a burden.

Towards the end of 2023 I was thinking about New Year's resolutions and wanting to clear my conscience, so I'd originally planned on painting like a madman and getting through a huge chunk of my unbuilt models. Then the first week of 2024 came and went without me so much as looking at the models and I knew I had to make a change.

We've all heard this advice before - "don't buy any new models until you've painted what you already have!" If I had any hope of actually painting all my models and playing a game of 40K in 10th edition, I knew I'd have to do something drastic.

After sleeping on it, I decided to put all my Space Marines on eBay (see the attached image) and pick up an Ork Combat Patrol instead. I got rid of all my Orks during 7th (again, life happened) and I missed my green bois... although I don't miss their twerking models.

So far I've been able to resist trawling eBay and Facebook marketplace for deals on Ork models. Once the Combat Patrol arrives and I've actually got something to be getting on with, I may well turn it into a challenge - perhaps a hobby streak? Anything to avoid me creating a new pile of shame and having to go through another hard reset!

My only regret is not taking a picture of the pile of shame before packaging it up. Would've been a useful reminder not to make the same mistake twice!

That’s not a bad way to do things. Better to have a small amount of stuff to work on than a big pile that you feel like you’ll never get through. Good luck with the orks

It was difficult because, in a way, amassing that many models felt like progress. Even though I never did anything with them, it made the decision to start over a little more difficult than I expected. Thanks for the luck, I'm more than likely going to need as much as I can get :teehee:

I know what you mean. I think the fact you hadn’t started them makes your decision easier though. If you were already partway through the project it would have been more of a wrench.

At the moment I’m trying to clear all the stuff I have that needs painting, which isn’t a huge amount actually now. I’ve told myself I can start something new when that’s done :)

Yeah... about that... I did maybe sort of start them a tiny bit

You're doing it the right way! The way I should've done it from the beginning

Nice models.

I was in a really similar position. I had a good 2000 points of Chaos Warriors on the pile of shame, and an Eldar army that was half painted years ago and look rubbish while the other half was unpainted. I had a bunch of armies started that I had never finished. I always wanted to get new shiny things but felt guilty when I did because of the pile I already had.

Eventually I decided enough was enough and sold all the Eldar and the chaos, even the painted stuff, apart from my Chaos Lord on dragon which I kept as a keepsake. I sold everything I had not yet started painting in the unfinished armies. Only unpainted army I kept was my guard. I then used some of the money on household budget and some on a few new bits. Now I’m making myself go through those things that I really wanted to keep. I have a rough target of May to complete everything before my 40th birthday.

The number one thing that has given me a huge boost this year is getting engaged with the B & C. Thanks to Grotsmasha and GreenScorpion’s challenges I’ve painted all of my 1830 points of guard and 560 points of Raven Guard in the last six months, plus some other bits and bobs.

Maybe when Call to Arms starts you should pledge your Combat Patrol?

I was thinking of doing a 100-day hobby challenge but committing to it publicly will (hopefully) keep me accountable, thanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely jump on board.

That's a good idea to have a target date or even a deadline, I'm probably going to paint one model to see what I like and what I don't then I'll have a better idea of how long the rest would take me. Do you have any pictures of the Chaos Lord on Dragon? I'd love to see the model you chose to keep!

I’m not sure if I’m allowed to post it due to forum rules, so here’s some pictures of a Grey Knight Terminator instead :

Out of curiosity, how did you paint the white on the apothecary? I’m tempted to start White Scars in HH, but painting a whole army white scares me …

I used Corax White as the base then did the highlights with White Scar and the shadow areas with some Nuln Oil. I painted the model in sub-assembly and, honestly, each part took maybe 4 or 5 coats of Corax White (thinned down) before the spray prime base coat wasn't visible. I definitely don't think I chose the best method of painting a white model, I just used what I had.

Even though I'm happy with how it turned out I wouldn't want to do it again!

Maybe you'd be interested in the 12 Months of Hobby Challenge? It's a simple commitment of at least one painted and based model every month. Many of us paint more than that, but the commiment is only a single model.

I've actually had a look at that and I am thinking about joining the challenge, though I'm still waiting for my units to arrive in the post and want to do a couple of test paint jobs to decide on a style before I commit to painting everything. My plan is to get that done over the next week / 10 days then I'll still have enough time to commit to the challenge and paint at least 1 model in the ~1 week remaining of January!
