  1. For the first time in the ETL, we are introducing the title of "ETL Master Artificer", a title to be decided by the B&C community at large. The list above contains the names of the ETL VI participants that obtained the title of the Artificer in alphabetical order, and is the group from which the Master Artificer will emerge! Vote which one you prefer, and to help you decide, I have included in the next post, pictures with examples of the Artificers' work with pictures made and approved by them. A few pointers" Any member of the B&C is welcome to vote - you don't have to have participated in the ETL to do so. This is open to all. Vote on the basis of the quality work done (personal criteria obviously) - not on the basis of the in-Universe faction you prefer You do not have to justify your vow. If you want to leave comments however, feel free to do so. You may vote more than one option! You don't have to choose only one - unless of course you like only one option over and above everyone else. Vote which one(s) you prefer, and to help you decide, I have included below, pictures with examples of the Artificers' work with pictures taken and approved by them. This topic will remain open until Sunday, August 12, where the rank of the Master Artificer will be awarded to one of the above Artificers! 1. Augustus b'Raass: A Typhus to die for! 2. Calyptra: Scourges ready for the party! 3. FearPeteySodes: Space Wolves attack! 4. Interrogator Stobz: Who let the Warhounds out? 5. Jam Master Flex: Yellow galore! 6. Kizzdougs: Heresy most heretical - are you Alpharious? 7. KrautScientist: Armiger with driver? 8. LutherMax: Suave Raptor Captain on cog wheels! 9. oldschoolsoviet: Knights are incorruptible, right? http://i.imgur.com/YgJzieX.jpg 10. Shas’O R’alai: Big Yellowfin Tuna 11. Spagunk: Maybe a happy Chaplain lives here 12. Tankus Wokus: An Ancient and an ancient Apothecary 13. TheOneTrueZon: Moody Film Noir! 14. Vay: Yes, that's the Manta you're looking for! 15. Vykes: Horus' own!
  2. Whilst the BA Showcase thread exists for everything, the following thread is to showcase our endeavours during our historic ETL VI campaign. Don't be shy, show off your work below!
  3. Right folks, it's that time of year again: the ETL is upon us. This is what we've been building towards. What is the ETL? The acronym for E Tenebrae Lux, the ETL originated as a painting challenge put forth by the Dark Angels sub-forum. This has since blossomed into a full on, inter-forum painting competition whereby an individual vows a legal unit (or units) for a particular faction and has to paint them to completion (in the owners eyes) within a three month time frame. The faction with the most points painted is crowned the winner earning eternal glory (special signatures, etc) and a year's worth of bragging rights. ETL I can be found here ETL II can be found here ETL III can be found here ETL IV can be found here ETL V can be found here Our Heritage As you all know, Blood Angels and their Successors study the arts. Our extended lifespan allows us to pursue and master the finer things in life and it is often remarked how exquisite the works of our artisans are. Certainly our preponderance for Artificer Armour, master-crafted weaponry, tapestries and so on show this off and back in the real world, some of the best painted models on the B&C are Blood Angels. In the previous painting challenge, the Librarium challenge (which is currently on permanent hiatus) our faction had a long and distinguished roll of honour whereby we won the event year ofter year. However, for the first three events this hadn't transferred into the ETL: In ETL I we finished fifth (out of seven participants). In ETL II we finished fifth (out of eight participants). In ETL III we finished seventh (out of eight participants). That said, we threw the form book out of the window for ETL IV: We finished fourth (out of seven participants) and within sight of second place Our participant level (83) was at a record high Our number of vows (130) was at a record high Completed points (41,285) was at a record high Final score (26,197) was at a record high ... and this set us up nicely for ETL V – where we came fifth. Wait, what? Despite being in third place throughout, generating our highest ever final score (29,116), and knocking out a completion rate competition high of 86.5 %, we were knocked down into fifth place (out of seven participants) by a small matter of 3000 points come the end of the competition. Our commitment can't be faulted. Our dedication and morale can't be faulted. What lost us third place was an average vow of 402 points (competition average is usually in the high 700s) and this is what we need to change. Whilst every little most certainly helps (and should you go down this route, knock out the five vows as quick as possible), vowing big (yet manageable) at the start and re-vowing smaller items will put us in good stead for the event. They do say to plan twice, and paint once... However, we haven't been caught unawares. Due to the Gift of Foresight that many of us are blessed with, the Great Baalite Bake Off and Blood & Zeal events have put us in an amazing place of readiness – the B&Z alone has seen us get almost 1000 PL of models event ready. Furthermore, the participation levels, camaraderie, and utterly phenomenal completion rates seen during these have us in tip-top condition going into an ETL – we have never been this well prepared and it's all down to you and how you've responded. This is it, the last push, the assault on Terra of events, and one we can't fail. With our resources, history, and buoyed by the success of the GBBO and B&Z, we remain a dark horse for ETL VI - but only with your unwavering and appreciated support. Our Competition We will have seven other Factions to see off in this event: Age of Darkness (or AoD) are those who play FWs 30k expansion. Make no mistake, their resources are huge, however, we've somehow kept pace the two previous ETLs. Despite their vast manpower they have two glaring weaknesses, the first is their tendency to burnout during the event (meaning if we keep up they can be caught) whilst the second is the perceived stagnation of the game (according to the internet that is). They will be looking to cast off these tags and finally attain their potential – but again, we can't let them out of our sight. This year they will be split into loyalists and traitors where they compete together and against one another for the three titles Chaos (comprising of the CSM, 1kS, DG, R&H, & Daemons fora) are the reigning champions with a winning streak stretching back to 2014. To make matters worse, they have also been bolstered by the addition of Codex Thousand Sons and Codex Death Guard. However, all is not lost! Constant winning breeds complacency whilst a backing as large as they can potentially command can result in a lower completion and re-vowing rate. One day they will be caught and made to pay for their crimes against us. Split into Heretic Astartes (C:CSM, 1kS, DG), R&H, Daemons - combined for ETL Magister, but competing against one another for the other two titles Dark Angels are due a good run and having had their Codex around the same time as ours there should be enough in the tank for a painting bounce. They will also want to “put us in our place” having finished below us for the past two events. A wounded animal is dangerous and if they can get their motivation going we'll be in trouble – like us, they are sleeping giants of the B&C painting event history. We are with them for ETL Magister, against them for the rest Imperial Forces of Reknown (IFOR – comprising of the Guard, Ad Mech, Imperial Agents, and Sisters fora) have the potential to be huge – carried by the Guard and Ad Mech fora, their vows are often massive give the super-heavies at their disposal. With the Sisters star rising following their teaser a few weeks back, recent releases (including Custodes), and wanting to get rid of the wooden spoon from ETL V, they will have a point to prove – and that's before we know if they will be joined by the Grey Knights and Deathwatch fora (confirmed) Playing against one another for Primus Inter Pares & Dominus Exercitus, together for ETL Magister Index (comprising of Codex Space Marines) is another historic superpower who we've been slugging it out with over the past two ETLs. Their resources are vast but with an older Codex they could struggle. However, many have a point to prove and that includes the Black Templars who will not only want revenge for Blood & Zeal but will want to show they are still a force to be reckoned with. Dangerous – even moreso if they are reinforced by the Deathwatch and Grey Knights fora. We are against them for the solo titles but join with them for ETL Magister Space Wolves shocked everyone with their run during ETL V. However, this could well have been their so called “miracle run” (coined by our run in ETL IV) and the pressure is on for them to keep it going. Couple that with a lack of Codex and it will be hard for them but we should not write them off as to do so is perilous at best: certainly they will be the ones knocking out the super vows rather than the tiny ones. We are against them for the solo titles but join with them for ETL Magister Xenos (comprising of the Eldar factions, Necrons, Orks, and Tau) are the new kids on the block and an unknown quandary. What is certain is that they will be taking members from established Factions meaning many of us will be dripped dry of the talent we need. Don't fret if your friend is a secret xenos worshiper, for this is your time to shine and push us to glory! Team Xenos for ETL Magister but split into their four parent fora for the other two titles The ETL VI Captain Semper has already hinted that basic rules will be the same as the previous years (albeit with an added xenos threat), however, he wont be drawn on which of the two historic start dates he is set to use. This means that we can assume the following: Challenge window 01/05/18 - 01/08/18. Regardless of when the date is, the first vow must be made within one calendar month of the start date Maximum vows to be five, maximum of 20,000 points per Frater for event; A new one can be made once you have completed the previous one. Any uncompleted vows nullify your entire points haul All models to be a legal Codex entry and WYSIWYG Two images - an unpainted/primed one and a completed one - are all the evidence you need (although more and participation is encouraged). These will need to be posted in the Stratagem thread when it goes live New for ETL VI! - Three titles: Primus Inter Pares: the Forum with the highest score WITHIN its Faction - Favourites Dominus Exercitus: the Forum with the highest score AMONG ALL Factions (similar but not 100% like the Primus Inter Pares of old) - Dark horse ETL VI Magister: the Faction with the highest score among all Factions - Dark horse What Can I Do? Basically, we have between 3 and 5 weeks to get ready. Use this time to plan your vow(s) into manageable chunks and then get them finished modelling-wise and undercoated. For example, paint all your red models as one vow, your black models as another, vehicles as one, etc If you are magnetising, vow the expensive choice! Also, things like hunter-killer missiles count as they are WYSIWYG so add them to your vehicles even if it's via blu-tac! Remember that the level of completion is what you are comfortable with. For example, my gaming group requires a minimum of three base colours and for the model to be based in order for it to be considered battle ready. That's as far as I'll be going, though I may throw in some detail if needed (seriously - I can shade, and highlight when I have more time) Imperial Knights, Forge World Knights and Titans will again be likely candidates for our vows Assassins, Deathwatch, Legion of the Damned and units available through stand alone Formations (i.e. Stormtalons from the Adeptus Astartes Stormwing) are not permitted due to either having their own sub-forum on here or being part of another ETL-Faction's Codex Relevant BA units from the GWs Indices, FWs Indices and BA-legal experimental FW units are permitted. For points, you will need to use the most up-to-date source Participate! Check our stratagem thread regularly, join in the with banter, check other threads for inspiration; ask, and be absorbed by the event. The ETL grafts together the whole website in one voice and with one goal and as with any online community, you get out of it what you put into it. In short, take up your paint brush and take up the challenge laid down by the PCA forum to bring honour to our Faction. We are the sons of Sanguinius; it's time to once again make our father proud. Death Company and Feast of Blades Following the ETL in September is the From Rage to Salvation event. As is our way, those who fail their ETL vows (and thus gain the Oathbreaker vow) will form the Death Company. During the RTS they will have a final chance to complete their vow before the year is out and gain salvation by casting aside their Oathbreaker vow early. Feast of Blades will run for many of our HQs painted during the ETL and given the amount mustered during B&Z many of us should have a suitable choice. If you're interested, follow the above link and make sure your vow is completed! Tags /equip modhat The correct use of tags can be found here. Basically, this is a method of making things easier to search to people can gain fast, easy access to your work and that of others. The official ETL tags are: E Tenebrae Lux E Tenebrae Lux VI ETL ETL VI ... in addition to all the usual things like Blood Angels WIP, and so on. If we can remember to add these to our work then that would be great.
  4. It is not our technology that will enable us to prevail in this galaxy. It is our shared sense of honour and commonality of cause that unites us and will give us the power to defeat our enemies. For those who don’t know what the ETL is, it’s an annual painting event where participants are invited to vow to paint 40k-legal units of their preferred army in a period of three months, recording their points’ values. Participants may make up to 5 such vows with a limit of 3,000 pts per vow – but no limit to the amount of units pledged. Apart from the individual challenge of completing the pledged units, each forum is competing as a team against every other forum of the B&C by adding up the points of each individual participant’s entries to work out the total score for the entire forum. The forum with the highest score wins. But be aware: if you fail to complete your second or any subsequent vow then all previous vows are nullified and will not count towards the total of the forum! And there is another catch: the total points of each forum are modified by the completion rate i.e. the total completed points over the total points pledged. So failing to complete subsequent vows (thus nullifying all your previously completed ones) has an augmented negative effect on the completion rate and hence on the forum score. So be extra confident when you up the stakes. This is of course a very brief description of the event. For more details you may take a look at the previous ETL here (ETL V), but also expect some additional changes for this year’s event! The expected time to launch is in early or mid May. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Aur'ocy shath'r'i tskan sha Tau'va. Soldiers of the Fire Caste! Kroot and Vespid allies! Today, we stand as a bulwark against the selfish, the soulless, and the mad! Today, we must drive back our enemies from our city and from our world! Today, more than ever before, we fight for the Greater Good! And we will triumph! This will be the first time that the might of the T'au Empire will be mobilised to enter the ETL for The Greater Good and the Ethereals expect all Shas, Por, Kor and Fio caste members to acquit themselves well in the coming storm. It is the time for our young Empire to show these upstart races the strength of our mighty Her’ex’vre - the Kor'vattra will darken their skies with Sun Sharks, Razorsharks, Barracudas and Tiger Sharks - shoals of Hammerheads, Skyrays and Piranhas will rent their puny vehicles - Devilfish will carry our brave Shas towards the foe ably supported by our Kroot and Vespid allies and the heavy footfalls of our mighty Ta'unar will turn their bones to jelly in fear. Participants vowing for the T'au Empire will be able to draw units from the Codex and Forge World units so let’s take this opportunity to organize ourselves, measure our strength and see what everyone plans to pledge. We have a great range of miniatures, an updated 8th Edition Codex and the flexibility of a young and vibrant race! Remember, the miniatures may be assembled and undercoated – but not otherwise worked on at the time of vowing them! It is but a Kai'rotaa in the future - be ready! When the Ethereal call... who will answer?
  5. BROTHERS PREPARE, ETL VI WILL SOON BE UPON US! Feel free to ask any questions! ------------------------------------------------------------------ The ETL has a special resonance with the Dark Angels as it originated as a challenge of the Dark Angels Forum against all the forums of the B&C in the wake of the popular, but now extinct, Librarius Painting Challenge (LPC) which was the previous inter–forum B&C event. The Dark Angels not only won the last two LPCs but also managed to win ETL II – a much greater event in scale and scope. Participants vowing for the Dark Angels will be able to draw units from our Codex and Forge World units compatible with the Dark Angels so let’s take this opportunity to organize ourselves, measure our strength and see what everyone plans to pledge. We have a great range of miniatures, an updated 8th Edition Codex and the single-mindedness of the Sons of the Lion! Remember, the miniatures may be assembled and undercoated – but not otherwise worked on at the time of vowing them! So who’s going to take up the challenge? And what do you guys plan to paint in the service of the Lion? THE INNER CIRCLE EXPECTS THAT EVERY MAN WILL DO HIS DUTY!
  6. Update: April 29th, 2018 Semper has posted the rules. Check them out! Update: April 23rd, 2018 Updates over Oi, listen up, ya gits! Coming up soon is the 6th E Tenebrae Lux event, an annual Bolter and Chainsword army painting challenge! And of course, with the introduction of Xenos to the B&C, this is the first one where we Orks can show who’s best. It’s us. Cause we Orks. What’s ETL? From the host of the event: So what? So this is our chance to show that the Ork community on the Bolter and Chainsword may be small, but we’re passionate! From what Semper has said, all the Xenos forums will be one team. And I don’t know about you gits, but I ain’t going to let some pointy-eared panzees, toothy bugs, or metallic tin ‘eads show us up. Orks always pull their own weight! Personally, I have never participated in an ETL, despite having been a member for the entire time they’ve been run. But I am excited for this opportunity, which happens to fall on the exact right time for Orks. Seems likely that our Codex will probably land right in the middle of the event, providing ample opportunity and motivation at the best possible time! But our WAAAGH!!! is more like a wagh Yes, we’re a small community in the B&C. Yes, we cannot expect to compete with the established forums. But much like a WAAAGH!!! grows exponentially as more and more Orks flood to it, this is a chance for us to establish our community on these boards. Furthermore, the ETL factors completion percentage into the final score, so if we and the other Xenos manage to complete most or all of what we vow, there is always a possibility. More likely, we can just show up a forum that has been here longer. After all, an Ork never loses. Ok, what can we do? ETL works on making a vow, and completing it before the end date. You can check out this link to the previous ETL to get a much more in depth look at what you can expect. With permission, I’m plagiarizing some of the Blood Angels’ post, relying on Jolemai’s experience to make up for my complete lack of: I’m going to focus on smaller vows, nowhere near that 3000 point mark. I think shooting for a high completion rate would show the rest of the board the Ork players are for real, and to that end, I’d encourage making manageable vows. You can always make additional vows (up to 5 total) if you find that the spirit of the competition has inspired you like an Imperator titan inspires a Mek. In addition, I’ve included some more of Jolemai’s wisdom: We can do this! Start prepping those models, planning the vows, and get talking. Let’s build up our little community and showcase why Ork players are the best. As Ghazghkull said: “We iz gonna do this coz’ we’re Orks an’ we was made ta fight an’ win!”
  7. The ETL is back after a year of hiatus. It will start on May 1st and will last until Aug 1st. Apart from being tuned to 8th Edition rules and Codices, this ETL will be the first time that Xenos will be participating. And in the case of Tyranids that will also include Genestealer Cults. For more details you can check this thread here: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/345917-its-been-a-long-time/ Feel free to ask any questions you might have either here or in the linked thread above. :)
  8. Hello everyone, This is my ETL VI thread to toss in various pics and musing as I work through my vows. To start, here is my first vow and progress picture: Progress 1: Now currently I am working on the second half of this squad. In between what painting I can get in, I have been trying to update my transfer game a bit. So as a test I bought some Liquitex Gloss medium and did a 3:1 mix of gloss to water. Using Saint Duncans method of gloss coat, transfer then matte coat I set up a test figure to verify if that method will work for me. Once done, I then did some foam to stipple some layer red on the figure to nice effect. Here is my test mini: I think it works and so my next step is to use this method as often as I can. The trick for me is to be patient which is REAL difficult for me to master as the closer I get to finishing, the more I tend to power through all the detail work and stuff. Anyway, currently my eyes were dilated so no painting today for me. I should be better tomorrow and be able to get through some more of the second half of the squad. Need to start putting base color besides red (blacks, tabards/scrolls, silvers etc.) on them. After that, I can start working on detail work and the like.
  9. ETL V was my first experience taking part in a proper event on the forum, and it really pushed me to clear through a massive backlog of unpainted Marines. I've been looking forward to this since that one ended, almost two years ago! Now various projects have come and gone in that time, and I must admit I was sorely tempted to pledge for the Xenos faction, given I have a fledgling Dark Eldar army in progress and I''m intending to add to it with Ynnari, Craftworlders and Harlequins. However, the majority of my hobby stuff involves Astartes of various flavours, and so I am once again going to be vowing on behalf of the Space Marines faction! In addition to the obvious goal of getting my myriad half-finished projects painted up, I have two personal goals I'm aiming for in order to better my own performance from ETL V: Paint more points than I did last time (4135) Complete 5 separate vows (last time I managed 4) I'll be using this thread to catalogue my progress through the event on the various different armies I have lined up for painting! I have conjured up 5 projects out of the various things I have sitting around unfinished at home. Project One - The Exorcists I built these guys as part of the recent Blood & Zeal event, as I'm intending to run them using the Black Templars rules. I originally envisioned them as a standalone army of around about 1000 points; there are a couple of extra kits I dredged up included along which boost that total up slightly, but they make up a relatively modest part of my overall plan and I don't expect to add to them over the course of the event. I'll be tackling these guys as part of my first vow! Project Two - The Argent Praetorians Imperial Fists successors with a Knightly Order vibe to them. There's a lot of sword iconography, robes, tabards and MKIII helms sprinkled around to emphasize that, and the odd kit borrowed from the Dark Vengeance box (namely Bikers and Librarian, because again, robes!). A lot of these guys will feature in my first vow too, although I'm considering adding some Primaris reinforcements later on in the event. Project Three - "The Victrix Guard" This probably is not what they will be called long term, but it's the term that gave birth to the idea. A band of warriors hand-picked by Guilliman to serve as his personal errand-boys (and/or Honour Guard) while he's out on crusade. My version will be a Primaris-focussed Ultramarines successor, led by various heroes of Ultramarine heritage and decked out in an inverse Ultramarines colour scheme (gold with regal blue), better to represent the Lord Commander of the Imperium (not to mention, look snazzy next to some Custodes) The core of this will be a repaint of the stuff from Dark Imperium, plus a handful of characters I kitbashed for the last ETL but never got around to vowing. I'm waiting on Guilliman himself and a few paints to arrive in support of this project, so they'll be reserved for Vow 2. It's not at all unlikely I'll pick up even more for these guys over the next couple of months. Project Four - The Astral Vipers So this one is going to involve a bunch of models that started life as an Alpha Legion Heresy force. Due to the fact that Heresy has been left behind by 8th Edition, the likelihood of them ever actually seeing play in a Heresy game has reduced to zero, so I'm re-purposing them for 40k. Now, while Alpha Legion themselves are cool, I'm actually going to be turning them into a loyalist Raven Guard successor. I'll need to remove some iconography on a few models (although I intentionally chose the name Vipers so I could keep using the cool scale-covered components here and there), and this gives me a bit of room to play around with the colour scheme too. I have these guys down for Vow 2, although I'll need to decide how I'm going to paint them first! Inspired by the discovery of an old Amethyst Purple pot in the loft, I'm leaning towards a metallic purple. Project Five - House Dawnstar I ended up with a couple of Armiger Warglaives going spare after trading some Forgebane sets about, and decided to keep them for myself. These will form the vanguard of an Imperial Knights projects, but I'm not sure whether or not i'll manage to add any of their bigger friends before the end of ETL. Not completely sold on a scheme yet, but I'm leaning towards a purple and bone scheme similar to the one that was in White Dwarf this past month. Thanks for reading all that waffle, and good luck to everybody taking part!

You may also use this thread to discuss the progress of the event with your fellow participants, exchange ideas, offer and receive modelling/painting advice and generally have some ETL–related fun! You can vow any Units from all official Black and Red books or PDFs (even experimental) – provided the points are taken from the latest version. IMPORTANT NOTE: THE COLOURS OR LOYALTY AND TREACHERY The only limitation is that participants of the AoD-T Outpost cannot choose units explicitly labelled “Loyalist”. Other than that, there is no restriction. You can paint whatever Legion or other HH sub-faction you like provided you respect the condition above. IMPORTANT NOTE: TITANS ARE TITANS It is a fact that the AoD Faction will suffer from a discount in points vs. 40k for similar units. This is not viewed as an overwhelming handicap in general, but we believe it is especially unfair for Titans. As such, for Titans and Titans only, the AoD faction will be using the 40k points, i.e. Warhound: 2,000pts Reaver: 4,000pts Warlord: 6,000pts IMPORTANT NOTE: ALWAYS USE THE LATEST PUBLICATION TO SELECT AND PRICE YOUR UNITS This means that if there is an update of any Red book or a new Black book that revises pre-existing units during the life of the event, then all vows made AFTER the release of the updated book must be priced according to the new book. Also, any official PDF releases relevant to Horus Heresy are also admissible (even if experimental) until an official publication that contains them is released.
