Founding • Founding: Unacknowledged (believed to splinter from VIIIth Legion at Isstvan V). • Primarch: Konrad Curze. • Gene-seed: VIII Legion (Night Lords lineage, under Mechanicus oversight). • Chapter Master: High Count Malchior Veynar. • Fortress Monastery: The Nightfort. • Homeworld: Nostramorth. • Chapter Symbol: A bone skull bound in chains, black wings spread. Origins The Lords Penitent came about during the Horus Heresy, at the Drop Site Massacre on Isstvan V. When the traitors turned on the loyalists, the VIIIth joined the slaughter. The warrior who would later become the first High Count, Malchior Veynar, followed his brothers at first, killing loyalists, hunting them through the ash-choked canyons. He told himself they’d been betrayed, that the Emperor deserved this. But as he fought, he saw the truth. Horus wasn’t a saviour. Horus was the one damning them. Curze had fallen fully to madness. It didn’t matter what Nostramo suffered, it didn’t matter if the Emperor had abandoned them. Their oath still stood. Duty was duty. Horus was the traitor, not the Throne. At Isstvan V he and a fraction of his brothers turned their blades on their kin, siding with the Salamanders in the chaos. They painted over their old heraldry, They fought like they always did — from the shadows, utilising gurellia tactics. — but this time it was against heretics. The Salamanders, though wary, marked their actions and never forgot that these few had turned the night against Horus’ horde. Homeworld: Nostramorth Nostramorth is a storm-wracked world of near-perpetual night. The skies are thick with black clouds and constant lightning storms, its seas poisoned, its mountains cracked open. It is a place fitting for sons of Curze. The people live under strict law. Crime is punished swiftly and publicly: thieves nailed to gates, murderers impaled, heretics flayed. It is brutal, but it is how they keep their home safe. Recruitment, now, is obscure Families offer their children willingly, walking them to the fortress gates and leaving them with the mechanicus. Fortress Monastery: The Nightfort Is a Gargantuan Gothic construction built into a mountain that over looks the villages the scatter the planet. It was once a Great Crusade staging ground of the VIIIth Legion, and reclaimed by the Lords Penitent as their home. Inside, the halls are lined with trophies — Skin of The Arch enemy, Weapons and armour collected over time. Leadership The Lords Penitent are ruled by High Count Malchior Veynar, their founder, who has led them since Isstvan. He has not aged since he founded the Penitent Legion, pale-skinned with black eyes and sharpened teeth. It has been speculated that he is one of few perpetuals although nothing has been recorded. His Armour is a deep blue, mostly consisting of Night lord decorations, his cape is that of collected flesh dyed red, faint outlines of lightning crawls across his power armour. His weapons of choice are Power claws, chainglaives and bolt pistols, a familiar arsenal. Beneath him are the Counts, each leading a company. Chaplains serve as Confessors, Librarians are more trusted even if the chapters relations with their methods are troublesome. Apothecaries as Mortifiers, Sergeants, Veterans, Legionaries, Initiates and foundlings follow in the hierarchy. Rivalries exist between the different branches of the chapter as well as the Mechanicus that live alongside them Naturally, but Malchior keeps them united. Under the common Uniting duty to serve the Emperor. Combat Doctrine The Legion still keep their Father chapters Terror Tactics, passed down by the High count and any remaining night lords within the chapter as well as the records kept by the Librarians however they have adapted. They adapt their tactics depending on their circumstances. While primarily they prefer to operate in Stealth and Guerrilla Operations they have a strong capability in direct full front combat, more commonly when engaging Specific Xenos Species. Beliefs They see the Emperor as the Eternal Judge. His will is law, His light pierces even the darkest Shadows the false gods cast. Curze all be it discreetly is respected as their father. They understand why he fell, they know he chose to rebel and for that he is damned. Yet they respect him for doing what the other legions could or would not. The Legion has an updated view on their Rule by fear beliefs. While Criminals and heretics are severely punished the Chapter holds a deep respect and love for their Mortals. As cruel, Horrorsome and grotesque as the punishments to those who Rebel against the emperor, to those who Thieve, murder, rape, and defy the will of the emperor is they ensure the safety of the true citizens of the imperium. Where the Thieves are flayed and the heretics impaled the Emperor’s flock who do not stray from their path are fed, homed and safe. They have come to understand their way of life and embrace it. Crime on Nostramorth is non existent, and the Astartes live alongside the people. Those who offered their children as tribute to Legion will often be visited by their offspring much like the salamanders. The Penitent Legion like all Chapters have flaws, one such flaw is their belief that they must continue their hunt of the Eighth Legion and continue to serve their penance for the Night Lords treachery even when it costs lives of the the Emperors flock but most notably the curse they continue to carry- their Visions. The Mechanicus tried to fix the gene flaws the Legion carry and have made the Visions and paranoia less prevalent yet nothing can truly prevent them. When The Lords Penitent were ordered to aid an Imperial Guard regiment against an Ork assault, The High Count had a vision of the Eighth Legion cutting through his Brothers, flaying the mortals and once again defiling the emperor’s will. So out of Paranoia and some tactical consideration the High Count diverted half his Force Track down any Night lord on Ceryx. With half their force gone The Guard line broke, Ceryx was as overrun the Guard and Legion suffered Heavy losses yet the High Count and his men found Night Lords, they slaughtered them and prevented the death of their Chapter- or perhaps its a false truth they tell themselves. Gene-seed The Lords Penitent carry the VIIIth Legion’s curse. They suffer nightmares, paranoia and anxiety ridden visions. While the Mechanics made them less prevalent they still occur Their eyes remain Black, a mutation that grants them night vision. Due to the experimental gene tinkering the Legion suffer disfigurement to their bodies primarily in their faces. Rebirth When Guilliman revealed the Primaris project to the Imperium, most Chapters were granted reinforcements. For the Lords Penitent, it was different. The Inquisition and Mechanicus demanded proof that they could be trusted with such gifts. The surviving original brothers — those who had walked from Isstvan into ten thousand years of War — were offered the surgery first. It was not presented as a reward, but as a test. The operation was invasive and brutal, and many of them did not survive it. Those who did became something no Night Lord could. Side Note. Overall im happy with my Chapter. Proud of what ive done so far, i plan to add more eventually, more lore, rank insignias, create a picture of their look and chapter mark, assuming i can make a decent looking one. update- added more less edgy/cringy wording. Tried adding some more details. Working on an expanded rank system as well as finalising the heraldry.
