None of the bases are complete. What you see is just the base colors. They'll probably end up with a rusty antiqued industrial redy brown and grey marble look.

Thanks KYR GKIKAS. :teehee:

C&C are welcomed.

Thanks solskjaer. :turned:

They have a plasma cannon. I know wierd for a DA tac squad :teehee:

Hes coming out pretty cool. I had to tone the plasma cannon down some, it was getting a little too checkery.

I'm working on another basic tac trooper. Should be done late tonight or tomorrow. When I get on these hot streaks i don't like to slow down.

The last man for a productive weekend. Hes one of my tac squad members that have earned the level of dawning the honor colors of the 4th company on his left shoulder pad.

More to come as the week progresses. C&C always welcomed. :)

First of all, congrats on that promotion then. What do you do for a living by the way?

Also, wow, you're really on a roll here. Must feel really nice to get that many marines close to completion all at once. I'm really loving the beak on the beaky. The lenses are superb, especially the scope on the bolter of that last marine, really well done! I also like the checkers on the boltguns. The parchment on the purity seals could do with some additional work, they feel a little bit flat at the moment. Looking forward to see more aswell as some freehand.

Wowzers... thanks Desert eagle :)

I'm an architectural designer. ;)

I've begun to re-highlight the green as suggested. Cleaning up a few things here and there along the way. Stuff you miss on the first run, you know. And I looked on CMON for some inspiration for skin and faces at that scale and I've come to a strategy that will add a little more to the Vet serg's head detail. Thanks for the comments. Good to have a different set of eyes on it. I'm kinda weirded-out theres been no other C&C by anyone else but maybe more will come in later :)

The parchments probably need a little writing. I'll look at that also. The primer results are beggining to bug me. My paint jobs are very smooth but when in the primer is slightly bubbly it screws everything up. I might go back to a brush-on primer.

I think I'm going to mix up the DA symbol on the pads with different versions of it. Some of the RT stuff and 2nd edition as well. I want them to have a true individual armor feel. I think it adds a little more personallity. Which is why I'm going free hand. I like the crusade look with honor badges and such. Makes the squad look more flavorful IMHO.

I would recomend dupli-color sandable automotive primer for undercoating. It is thin and very smooth for painting over. You can get it at any auto parts store or wal mart. It is also cheaper than GW's primer making it an all around winner in my book.

You're welcome brother.

I'm not really all that familliar with older DA stuff, i don't have a copy of RT myself... but mixing the symbol sounds like a really good idea to me. In fact, i can't see how you can go wrong that way since it will add a lot of characther to your army. And as a bonus, it'll be a lot more fun to paint!

Whats the stuff like if you need to strip the paint? Does it burn or melt the plastic at all? Is it water based? Thanks for the suggestion. I need another option.

Desert Eagle

I'll scan and post the pics I'm speaking of. Maybe I can get more Ideas from members of different ways of painting a sword and wings

Heres the last basic tac squad member of the group. Tomorrow will be the plasma cannon. Then this weekend will be the Vet Serg and Combat Squad leader.

It doesn't harm plastics at all and is really smooth laying paint. I've been painting miniatures for 17 years and haven't found anything better. I don't know how to strip it though, I've never taken the paint off one of my minis yet. If it still doesn't sound like your thing then perhaps someone else has some suggestions.

Sadly all of my miniatures went to auction when I got married and I haven't painted anything in months. I am slowly amassing a Dark Angels force to paint this winter and I'll post WIP shots in about a month when I get started. Your models remind me of Dark Angels in the white dwarf from several years ago and I'm both impressed and nostalgic every time I look at your work.

OK...it's time I chime in. Your work is awsome. It's very rare that someone puts this much time and effort into an entire army. You painting is very clean and smooth, and your dynamic poses and conversions are top notch.

Excellent job, and keep it up!

mikhail:

Ahhh... The crazy things people do when they get married... "Oh, life will change completely and i won't have any interest in it anymore..." LOL :P Well, get to work on them. Help me bring back the good ol days of eavy metal paint jobs and cool old school livery details.

PlagueMaster 1988:

Thanks man. I grew up playin the RT era armies and those paint jobs inspire me. I try to keep that part alive in my own weaker way but yes, I agree the Paint jobs nowa days in general are a bit stark. Not as much depth and flavor. I don't know if its because people at GeeDub don't have time anymore or they have just have too much going on. In the Last WD I saw some of the old guys (will remain nameless) and pics of thier newer armies painted and I shook my head. Its not even close to stuff they put together 15 years ago.

Mac Gal:

Thanks. Just keep goin and work at it and you'll probably be much better than most of us :)

Edit:

Wow thanks, Lunchbox. I'm just trying to keep up with you younger guys. :(

Thanks Undertaker.

Master Toddius,

Man, these guys keep getting better and better.

I loved the bases whe you first put 'em up, and the paint jobs are fantastic.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with the chapter symbols - I sem to recall you said you'd use a variety of them.... Does that mean freehanding on top of the company specific pads you're doing? You're far braver than me if it does

:(

Looking forward to seeing more (and trying to resist the urge to repaint some of my DA's - I don't need another project to work on!!!! :) )

Cheers

Widowmaker

still looking good mr t :) hows the squa dcoming along? must be done now.. got a pic of them in all there glory?

Tho im not very good at painting etc i would liketo echo mr lunchbox's words and say that it's great to see this much detail in a 'std' marine. Normally i production line my marines and take my time on characters, but my characters don't look as good as your marines!?!?!!! i take my hood off to you :)

Solskjaer

I had a nasty nasty deadline this week. But here is the plasma cannon member. I went through a couple different schemes to try and balance aaaallll the colors and metalics. The checkers went from 3 to 2 rows and the backpack. The Plasma coil went from scopion/goblin green to metalic blue/wash to yellow and finally settling on white/hawk/blue wash.

The highlights that desert eagle and I suggested are represented in this model. I'm going to spend the rest of the evening rehighlighting aaaaaalllll the other models. Which is tedious and boring but it need to be done.

Tomorrow will bring the Vet serg and the combat squad leader. Those will take a little longer becuase I want the Vet to look awesome.

C&C Welcomed.

Widowmaker:

Thankyou sir :) Yes it will all be freehand. No underlayment of a decal. I find the decals are too small to try and paint over. I like a bigger effect.

solskjaer:

This is my last go at a DA army. I want to do them right. They'll be around for years to come :P I'll place a squad shot up of the semi-finished 8 later tonight after I rehighlight.

Thanks all.

Maybe its just me, and I may be blind but after reading the whole thread I don't think I found a recipe for your colours once! These figs look amazing, different from the norm, and I really appreciate it. Could we get some of the ways you highlighted up the colours? Or could you point my blind self in the right way to find it?

Thanks Dark Horse (cool name btw).

The green is simply DA Green Mixed at varying depths with an old citadel color called Jade Green. It isn't produced anymore under that name but it is produced by what was the paint supplier for citadel named Coat 'de Arms. I don't recall thier name for it but there is a color index floating around somewhere that gives approximations between different lines.

All the dark PJ's I'll usually prime black. But for lighter PJ's I'll use white. For DA's I like black.

Jade Green is basically a liht blue green. DA green is a grey/yellow/green but the blue green gives it a nice sheen. And the final highlight has a nice cooler highlight with the blue in it. Both colors mix well and it reminds me of emerald green.

The red is the common base of Scab to Gore to Blood red. Typical.

The bleached bone is actually a mix of white and bubonic brown.

The chest plates vary on my mood. Some are a bubonic and white with brown ink. Some are the red mix. Some are bubonic with white but actually mix with brown ink to get a nice chocolate brown. The PC cannon has that mix on his arm.

Leather is Dark Flesh mixed with Snake bite leather and shaded with brown ink.

Thats about it. :teehee:

Just keep the paint THIN and do build ups carefully. I like to wet blend.

Hope that helps.

Based on my advice from comments I've recieved on this thread I went through and did a heavy paint job mod to the entire squad. I think this will set the pace for the other 2 tac squads. I wanted to get this just the way I want so the rest of the army comes together smoothly.

I'm currently working on the vet serg and combat squad leader but here is a 8 man semi-done (need pad icon and finish base) so that we can get a general feel of how each squad will look like.

med_gallery_317_1244_61408.jpg

The album.

I like the newer look of a bright highlight. It seems to bring out the detail more on the mini without killing the smoothness. What do you bros think?

C&C welcomed.

i would like to put in my 2cents

first off... all of ur stuff so far is AMAZING!!!!!!!

i wish i had the kind of time u appear to have so that i could paint my minis to that kind of standard. but alas, i have important things like school and a social life that prevents me from putting in that kind of time for my minis.

ANYWAY... keep up the great work and this should be an army to be very proud of when you are dun with it
