The Grey Death Chapter

Grey_Death

Recommended Posts

I finally got around to starting another mini after my long and drawn out Veteran >.>...

This time it's a lowly Tactical Marine. Who I'm sure will take me FAR too long to finish for a measly 15 points but hey, it's all about giving it your all! This guy will also be the base for the colors of the rest of my tactical marines as well. Be sure to stay tuned to watch him progress to a finished piece!

After this guy will be another Vet (the last three are in route).

Ok, this thread now gets to take responsibility of my whole army building process ;)....

Package in the mail today and guess what arrived way earlier than I expected:

So that's the rest of my Veterans, and my Rhinos can now be built as Razorbacks ^_^!

Only I've still got tons to paint as far as my regular marines go x.x....And I still need to purchase a hand full of them as well as figure out the plasma cannon situation. Not to mention needing to purchase my captain and model him as well. But at least I've got two full squads now. Just need to paint them all x.x.....

+++Paint every model to the best of my ability+++

This means not cutting corners just to make it go faster. Putting 100% of everything I've learned over the years into every model.

+++Learn along the way+++

Just because I'm painting an army doesn't mean I should stop learning new techniques and styles. Getting stuck in the comfort zone can really sap a lot of the creative juice from a project. I plan to keep things fresh by mixing up the models I sit down to paint. For example, paint a normal bolter marine, then paint a veteran, then paint a tank, then paint a normal marine, then another, then a vet etc...It's all about painting the models I WANT to paint right then and there. This will keep my mind fresh and excited about the project through it's completion.

+++The Progress Thus Far+++

http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o31/raynotisick/IMG_0347.jpg

This is where we stand so far. One marine is in progress at the moment as you could tell from the first post. Oh and I have to repair the tank after a run in with a drunken friend...>_<...I'll probably build the razorbacks soon as well. Welcome aboard and hope you enjoy the ride. It's gonna be nuts.

Alrighty. A little progress made tonight. I'm waiting on painting the backpack a while...I tend to wear the paint off the top in the process of painting the rest of the model. I guess I've just got grubby mitts. And I know! I know!! The gun barrel isn't drilled!! I can't seem to find the bit that fits...and I'll just have to make up for it by painting the black dot o' death. On with the pics:

I also am taking pictures for a small tutorial for painting white my way. I'll post it in the how to paint white on black tutorial thread when I get all the pictures together.

C&C welcome as always :sweat:.

Sweet colour scheme, the red and white accents look great in combination with the grey. :sweat:

Easy way to fix that is by sticking your model on top of a paint pot with a blob of blu-tac/poster gum. It works fine - the gum is strong enough to hold even heavy models like Typhus or Ogre Tyrants (provide the surface of the pot is big enough), and when you're done you can peel the stuff from underneath the model's base in a second.

My old Titillating Pink and Smelly Primer pots are great for this purpose, as I hardly ever need the paint inside. :P

Yeah I knew about the red on the bolter :); I'm not too worried about fixing it right away since the casing will be painted white by the time I'm done with the model.

Squiggoth - I think I need to head out and snag some blue tac and see how that works for me. I've always known about that method, I have just never bothered to try it out x.x...Maybe it's time to break that trend and see what happens.

Great looking scheme. The original Veteran is an awesome conversion, that may just be stolen (the idea, not the model, don't worry). That white tutorial will be great. I saw the models and immediately decided I wanted white bolters. Good luck finishing that. The MKI Veterans are wicked models as well, you'll have fun painting them.

G'luck!

Corvus - Thanks for the well wishes and kind words :devil:

jlmb - Thanks on the vet conversion, I think he'll fit in just fine with his new brothers. I'm really excited to start painting those guys. And you'll get to watch me paint away right here >.>...As for white bolters, I'm glad I could help you make a decision there! That white tutorial might be up by the end of the weekend, but we'll see what this weekend brings >.>...Might be busy with celebrating my completion of Fire Academy >.>.

If you haven't noticed yet, I'm all about keeping a near real time blog for these guys. It helps me keep motivated, and gives more chances for C&C that might catch something or give that perfect idea from left field I would have never thought of ^_-.

Ekk - I am still thinking of involving a skull. But again, not sold completely on the idea of using a skull. Hrmm..you know what...Here is a quick fluff piece I wrote MANY years ago during the Armageddon Worldwide campaign.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Damn this wretched place. Damn the orkish hoards. Damn it all.

We came here a full 2 months ago to the distress call from the High Lord Militant of the sector. By the time we got here the planet wall all but taken. All sorts of races have been drawn here by the fighting. Even those bastard marines of chaos have made their way here.

Upon arrival into the system we were immediately engaged by a fleet of orks sitting just outside our jump point. We lost half a company in the battle. Bless their souls and may the Emperor watch over them.

When we were finally in orbit we began our decent straight into the heart of the conflict around Hive Hesperus. The orks were making a quick advance on the hive defenses, which proved less than satisfactory for the job. One of our thunderhawks went down after dropping its cargo, crushing a rhino and it’s payload in the process. Too many brothers died merely getting to the planet. The green skins would pay dearly.

The attack was swift and brutal. We had them caught off guard and unbalanced them. The ensuing slaughter was our payback for all of our fallen brothers. By the end of the battle, the drop site was pooling with ork blood. I still can’t get over that they bleed red.

After the attack we regrouped and began preparing for the next assault. The local PDF and Imperial guard regiments made contact at once to find out how they could help. Their hope rekindled upon our arrival.

From a series of victories came a series of hard fought defeats as the orks numbers proved overwhelming in some sectors. We tried to redeploy to the areas but they were already over run. Pushed back into the hive we knew the only choice we had was to wait.

The urban battle soon thereafter was intense. Buildings became fortresses, and in each dozens threw down their lives. We lost many brothers during the fighting, though each took his toll on the advancing hoard. Suddenly the orks halted their advance and dug in. It had become a figurative trench war. The street was a no mans land in a matter of hours.

We took to the sewers and began making lightning raids from behind their lines, crashing in from below them only to dive back down a few minutes later. Many took our lead and began springing surprise attacks on the ork supply lines, which turned out to be more reinforcements for their line. It was working though, as the orks began to succumb and their numbers dwindled. At this weakness we launched a final repulsive attack, pushing them back past the hive walls.

After the push came the storms. The orks withdrew their forces to hiding northwest of the hive. We took shelter within the hive and began rebuilding and planning our defense.

Now we wait. Damn the waiting. It makes me uneasy and restless. But with our losses we have no other choice. When the storms reside and die away, we will be ready for them. By my honor as one of the Emperors chosen warriors we will give them hell and take their lives for those they have extinguished here. It’s only a matter of time.

-Brother Marine Mathius

3rd Armageddon War

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

I decided I should post this to give you all a feel for where I am coming from for these guys. I've always viewed them as solemn but determined. They view the Emperor as the Greatest Man to ever live, not as a God. Their dedication is to one another as brothers in arms. Every man has a say and every mans life valuable and not to be thrown away.

The white trim, in my mind, has come from their want to memorialize their brothers lost in the 3rd Armageddon War. This of course is just a great catalyst to have a bad ass color scheme...>.>...

I assume they are lead by Chapter Master Carlyle?

If you don't know what I'm talking about, I'm shocked. You need to play more Battletech.

If you DO know what I'm talking about, will you be using the Grey Death Legion symbols? Because I think it might be possible to find decal sheets for them online.

A cool set up there. ADD GRASS!!!! No, but they look nice.

Actually, after reading your comment, I have been contemplating the addition of some dried grasses to my bases in some spots.

As to the terrain set up, that thing is far from finished ^_-. I have lots of landscaping to do yet on it.

Well, on a serious note, grass does add some nice contrast to models.

Your guys there are beautiful, but the base colour is bland (not digging at your work there, just commenting on gray) grass would add some vibrancy to the mix as well as giving your models a more realistic feel. Mud on bases can work well, but terrain for example, grass and rocks can really be nice.

These guys kick arse, great job.

If you're looking for improvements, I'd like to second the grass suggestion. I think a few blades here 'n there will set everything off nicely.

Do you have any chapter and squad markings for these guys? Because thats the only thing that I thought was really missing.

(Apologies if they're mentioned elsewhere in the thread, I only looked at the pretty pictures and the last few posts)
