Pandora
I must say I love the shade of green on Maceo the Maligned, looks extremely cool. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/132390-musks-never-ending-csm-army/page/2/#findComment-1600413 Share on other sites
Muskie
I don't remember exactly how I did it, it was a few years ago. Probably Dark Angels Green, then Goblin Green, then Striking Scorpion Green, then Rotting Flesh. Maybe a wash or two, all done in my tiny line style, no wet or dry blending. I'm buying the odd Vallejo paint so they'll be in some of my upcoming tutorials. Nihm has the one for the Brotherhood of Darkness. I'll probably do the Company of Misery or the Bleak Brotherhood next month. Pandora
It's not so much what you do, it's more how you apply the lines I was wondering about. Do you split the end of the brush to get it looking more authentic or do you have just a really small brush? Cheers for the help. Muskie
I don't use a special brush. Any brush with a good tip will work. You need the paint to flow well. A size 1 or a 0 is fine. I rarely use smaller brushes then that, maybe on insignia and eyeballs, that's it. I use brushes from Michael's craft store, they are synthetic with yellow handles. Muskie
As promised I've been painting but these Plaguemarines/Nurgle Renegades are not green, nor or they purple, they are Brown. Yes Diarrhoea squad is expanding and will be returning to active duty at Astronomi-con Vancouver after being rendered obsolete by various rule changes and dated paint jobs. Beause someone will as here is the recipe. Prime Black, lots of black I think Bestial Brown or perhaps Scorched earth, the darkest one. Then tiny lines of Snakebite Leather Then I painted the trim Tin Bitz Then I highlighted the trim Brazen Brass Then I painted guns and stuff Chainmail Then I painted skulls Foundation Red Then I painted skulls Bleached bone Then I did a unifying wash over everything. http://www.muschamp.ca/OffSite/WIPModels/CSM/beforeWashes.jpg To make things interesting and to try out GW's much hyped washes I did one model "the Musk Way" which is thinned rust brown ink. This is the rust brown ink GW sold back in Rogue Trader times. The other two models got Devlan Mud and Gryphion Sepia respectivly. http://www.muschamp.ca/OffSite/WIPModels/CSM/afterWashes.jpg The photos aren't the best as they were taken last night. The Rust Brown Ink does the nicest brass, the nicest skulls, and not surprisingly the nicest rust. I'll be continuing to use it until the pot is empty. Devlan Mud really darkens things up, it takes the shine right off the metallics, it doesn't do much for skulls, I guess it is alright for brown armor parts. Sepia is yellow, it doesn't a better rust but not as good as Rust Brown Ink. It isn't as nice on the skulls, maybe I'll try the Orgryn Flesh Wash next. After doing Vomit Brown tiny lines, putting the shine on the chainmail with Silver and putting a lot of effort into the skulls including doing a rust brown/red ink wash which I also used on the chainmail to give more rust stains, I took another photo. http://www.muschamp.ca/OffSite/WIPModels/CSM/moreHighlights.jpg I gotta set something up to take better photos instead of just shooting the model on my painting desk. The models are mostly done, the purple tubing needs to be done of course, but after that only a few model specific details and insignia and fine details like eyes and squad markings. More brown Nurgle marines will be coming along with maybe the last green one I'll ever paint, at least on foot... Muskie
Same model, same amout of paint, better photo. Took it this morning in my new makeshift photo spot. I'm actually a good photographer so assuming my camera doesn't die I'll have better in progress photos going forward. http://www.muschamp.ca/OffSite/WIPModels/CSM/nurgleRenegadeWithHeavyBolter.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/132390-musks-never-ending-csm-army/page/2/#findComment-1607331 Share on other sites
cathar the great
that model sure is oldschool and looks very good but, it i have a mission, a crusade you might say, so i am telling you this: "Remove the name tag from the model. Name tags are usually done with much less detail than the rest of the model and seriously drag down the overall qualitiy of your work." Muskie
It isn't a name tag. I put that there so people would notice which wash was used: rust, mud, or sepia. It pays to read the thread and not just look at the pictures sometimes... :-P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/132390-musks-never-ending-csm-army/page/2/#findComment-1608204 Share on other sites

Muskie
I finished off the three Nurgle Havocs with Heavy Bolters and started on the last green Plaguemarine on foot I'll ever paint. I really need to move on from the Diseased Sons but my painting table is covered in stuff and it was hot today in Vancouver. None the less I forced myself to finish these three guys and I've started on the next one. I'll keep painting right up to Astronomi-con. http://www.muschamp.ca/OffSite/WIPModels/CSM/nurgleHavoc1.jpg http://www.muschamp.ca/OffSite/WIPModels/CSM/nurgleHavoc2.jpg http://www.muschamp.ca/OffSite/WIPModels/CSM/nurgleHavoc3.jpg http://www.muschamp.ca/OffSite/WIPModels/CSM/anotherPlaguemarine.jpg For the green guy he is made out of all sorts of parts as shown previously in a picture. I used some new colors, Ork Hide Shade, some Goblin Green made by Vallejo and the Ork Flesh wash. I also used old thin armor wash and Camo green so far on this guy who will lead my second squad of Plaguemarines at Astronomi-con Vancouver. Muskie
I think I painted more last night than I did today, but unlike Barret I only have a few guys to get done in two weeks. I didn't want to have to paint too much this summer. http://www.muschamp.ca/OffSite/WIPModels/CSM/morePlaguemarines.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/132390-musks-never-ending-csm-army/page/2/#findComment-1614017 Share on other sites
Barret
Those guys are great! I like the green painted Aspiring Champ in particular. Guess they want to look their best for when they die, eh? Muskie
I used slightly different colors than usual on the green guy, he's a one off so I don't care if he matches his squad perfectly. I also did one more layer of highlights and also a glaze to make him more vibrant. He needs to standout so people know he's special. Muskie
It wasn't the best day of my life, it wasn't the worst either. I just wish my life was easier. I did a little painting, enough to take two pictures to show the progress. I'll get these guys done, tomorrow I guess which leaves like a day or two to retrofit a Havoc launcher on a rhino and maybe do a little freehand. Muskie
Well it was really hot today, seriously affecting my productivity at work, I think it even affected my laptop. That was how hot it was in our busted AC office today. Anyway I still did four hours of painting, because I'm not Barrett. Of course since I'm not Barrett four hours of painting equals about one model. I almost got done the other three. They'll easily be finished tomorrow. This was the one Barrett liked best and I needed it to lead my second Plaguemarine squad at Astronomi-con Vancouver. I still haven't looked up his clever name, but he has many blended colors using both Citadel and Vallejo including over ten year old pots of paint and ink. I used the new washes some, I used the tiny line style, I used glazes, lots of little tricks. Pretty good for an aspiring champion I didn't even really need to paint... http://www.muschamp.ca/OffSite/WIPModels/CSM/plagueChampion.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/132390-musks-never-ending-csm-army/page/2/#findComment-1623049 Share on other sites
Muskie
Here are the completed additions to my army. They will be used, well some will at Astronomi-con Vancouver this weekend. I need to retrofit some stuff on to a rhino and I'm a little miffed I don't have the part I want even though I bought it on eBay over a month ago... Anyway here are two photos, I think the original Rust Brown Ink is better especially for rust than the various new washes. I won't be throwing out my ancient inks and washes anytime soon for the news ones. http://www.muschamp.ca/OffSite/WIPModels/CSM/washComparison.jpg Here is the rest of the models finished an sealed, though they may get some gore tonight... http://www.muschamp.ca/OffSite/WIPModels/CSM/brownAdditions.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/132390-musks-never-ending-csm-army/page/2/#findComment-1624952 Share on other sites

I'd have figured you'd like your old stuff better, but what is your opinion of the new washes straight up (i.e.: not in comparison to your old inks)? Are they worth it as an addition to your kit or do you see yourself not using them in the future? Muskie
I have done tutorials. Nihm has some new one I did that isn't even Nurgle. My tiny line technique as used on a Plaguemarine. My style which uses a lot of washes and abstract techniques rather than straight, clean edge highlighting can be be seen in detail in two high quality models I did for previous Grand Tournament armies. Lord with Kai Gun. Blastmarker Billy, Dreadnought de Nurgle If you just like pretty pictures of stuff I painted check out this page and this gallery. As for the new washes, I got talked into buying the box of all of them and they definitely have hype. Their number one claim to fame is you don't have to thin them. The number two is they match with GWs current paint line. So I see them being popular with young speed painters. I think the best painters in the world were doing just fine without them. It is fun to try them out, but I don't get the extreme results/looks I'm used to. The new washes are reasonably subtle and they dry, dry if that makes sense. My models have a wet look even after sealed with Matte sealer in part due to all the washes/inks I use. I see the best use of the new washes in quick army/squad painting. Supposedly they will contribute to a move away from black basecoating. I may try some grey or white priming again... Then you'd shade down as well as highlight up... Advanced techniques will yield better results but the idea behind the new washes is prime, then base coat, then a single contrasting highlight then a wash then maybe a tiny little bit of detail on face and hands if you're painting Space Marines. I'll try to use them in a future tutorial heavily... My tiny line technique will work fine with the new washes, the pale purple and the camo-rotting flesh color will need to be tested further. I like the original rust brown ink, for painting rust and leather for that matter. I'll probably prime up some plaguebearers to expirement on, plus use Nurglings of course. :-) Well I'm at work after the weekend I should have some major updates to my website... DuskRaider
Cool stuff, Muskie. I remember stumbling upon your page years ago, one of the things that made me start a Death Guard army. Your paint scheme and army really gives a retro RT feel, which I like. Best of luck at the tournament!
