Viva Metallica

Hey guys,

Finally got round to creating a tutorial for my Metallic marines:

1. Basecoat marine black.

2. Paint all of the armour with pure mithril silver and let it dry:

3. Wash the armour with badab black and let it dry:

4. Wash the armour with asurmen blue and let it dry:

5. Wash the armour with asurmen blue again and let it dry:

6. Wash the armour with asurmen blue for a third time and let it dry:

7. Paint the other stuff - metallics, eyes, and stuff:

(I know the penultimate picture looks the same as the last but it is actually darker, it's just the flash)

Thanks for reading guys. :)

+++EDIT: updated as many pictures as I can, I'm on holiday and only have access via the local library+++

+++EDIT 2: All sorted now :Elite:+++

Very good of you to give everyone a step by step tutorial on how you paint these.

I would suggest that you also include the picture of how the model looks just after you have washed it (on your blog/thread. That was yours, right? I'm not just imagining things). I think that really does along way to show people just how much they can apply without compromising on detail.

Just out of interest have you tried it with a darker metallic base colour (I.E. Boltgun), highlighted that base colour with lighter metals (I.E. Mithril) and then applied the washes?

you gunna try it Johnny?

I've been thinking about it. I a little worried that IF I didn't foul it up & it came out looking good that I'd be compelled to repaint my whole army (not that I've got that much painted). I was thinking about doing a test marine and maybe using it for my HQ models. I don't have any of the washes though. I'm debating on weather I'd actually get the washes or try creating my own wash with the darker green that I use for my Marines.

wow, this could be perfect to make my thousand sons stand out from others I've seen. Any suggestions on how to get a metallic yellow look using this method or would I just be better off putting a shiny mat on top of the yellow?

I've just done an experimental metallic imperial fist. I'll let you know how it went when i've finished.

I hope you don't mind a small hijacking of the thread.

I have done a metallic blue Army before and used a slightly different approach here are the steps I took

1: Chaos Black primer coat

2:Boltgun base coat

3: mix of 1 part blue ink 3 parts mithril silver

4: light thinned Blue ink wash concentrateing on the shadowed areas

I tried it today and got a great result. I paired it with green glowing eyes with green light reflecting on the parts of the helmet around the eyes. Works great because the blue is shiny, and the light of the visor reflecting on it gives it that extra touch. I bought some 1K sons to try it out (metallica blue, gold and green glowing eyes). I'll try to post a pic when it's done.

I was happy with the result of the marine but i had some trouble getting the wash to cover up equally in the second layer of asurmen blue. The first 2 layers (badab black and then the first asurmen layer) are exactly the same as on your pics. The third pic has a much better spread of color where i still had lighter and darker spots... Any tips? (or should i just use my brush to spread it out as good as possible).

Hey metcalfedan, this tutorial is good enough to go in the Librarium. If you submit it, we'll put it into the Librarium. If you're unsure of how to submit it, follow our convenient Dummy's Guide. Look forward to seeing it :teehee:

Cool thanks Sig <_<

And thanks for the guide to submitting, it's awaiting approval now :P

Thank you very much Mr Mecalfedan. Now thanks to you I have this obsession to do my own metallic marines. Unfortunately that obsession is to do metallic ALPHA LEGION. Which means trying to get a nice tricky gradient from green to blue. Thank you very much :P

Seriously, great tutorial. Hopefully I can adapt it to do what I want. We will soon find out I guess

Awesome tutorial. Not considered it myself. IMHO the GW washes asre one of the best things to be released for the practical aspect of the hobby. My only criticism of this technique is that you would have to be meticulous in cleaning and preparing your models (i.e. removing mould lines etc) otherwise they will stand out on the completed model. Case in point the side of the space-marines helmet.

edit: I have seen a side on pic of this marine somewehere on this forum, not this thread per se where you can see a bit of mould line...
