Just cracked open the box! About to go prime my tactical squad and will start uploading pictures asap. Should I prime them assembled or still apart?

Edit: This is the AoBR set so the marines are essentially built minus the packs and bolters.

I think you'll find that most people build first and paint later.

Probably the most important reason for doing it that way is to have a chance to remove any mold lines from your models. You'll find that this board strongly encourages the clean up of your figures with a hobby knife as it really detracts from the overall appearance of your completed figures.

Anyway, have at it and let us see what you have done.

Cheers,

I agree with the build before painting idea EXCEPT when dealing with Black Reach style marines. Always always ALWAYS paint before putting the gun on (Black Reach style, or normal), it makes your life so much easier.

Guess I'll do that on the next set :D

First (very) basic coat of Blood Red applied. Orgyn Flesh was will be applied next to the red areas. I wanted to experiment a bit with the weapons, some painted red then painted over, some simply primed. We'll see how they turn out. Here are my pictures:

Very basic, but a good foundation. I really like how the red looks on a white prime. I might use snow for the bases because I like the light contrast.

It is funny that the first 3 pictures look like an Orangey red, but the 4th picture looks deep deep red. Is that just a trick of the camera, or is the 4th picture a reflection of adding a wash or 2nd coat.

Camera trick. Lighting is terrible in the dorms. It's a very orangey red right now. I've applied ink but can't find my friend with the nice camera so I moved on past the inking to the touch-up of inking with blood red.

It's really unfortunate how bad the light is here. They're not really this orange, they're blood red with a blazing orange highlight and a subtle 50/50 mix of golden yellow / blazing orange super highlight. I've started to work on the chest eagles, but i'm not too worried, they'll be covered. Now I'm highlighting the heads and packs (the legs and torso were all that are highlighted as of these pictures). My brother with the flamer is the furthest along in the process so I had my photog. take more of him. I really wish the light was better because they look good. Oh well, I'll get better quality ones when I'm off my paint station in my dark room.

Just waiting to see some more pictures! Are you considering a mud/black wash over the models to pull out the recesses?

I actually already did, it didn't show up well at all. I'm going to again after everything then touch up again with blood red. I'm excited, the flamer guy is coming out really good.

Keep up the Good Work! Can't wait to see more pics!

By the way, what color are you planning for the chest eagles?

Thanks! This squad actually has Golden Yellow undercoated eagles (on the ones I left the guns off) then white over and the others are white with black wash so it looks like a distressed gray. From what I've seen blood angels seem to mix their chest eagles. Am I going to have trouble painting the sand or whatever I use on bases? I forgot to put that on pre-prime.

Question though, how do you decide what to do with the kneepads?

Pick a number from 1 to 6 <_<

Seriously though, as these are tactical marines, you might want to look at the second to the last page of our (PDF) codex. You could find the squad badges there. And paint them onto the right poleyn/knee pad :D

After multiple highlights, finishing assembly. Now I need to touch up, do the shoulders, backpacks and do the emblems!

On bases, I'd either go with gravel or pavement. Snow might look a little weird with all the red (though I could be mistaken), I'm just so used to the only snow bases I see are on Space Wolves.

True. I was thinking gravel to make my life easier.
