I wanted to write down my process right now. I'm sure I'm going to change it, but I want to chronicle it as it stands.

1) White Prime

2) Blood red basecoat

3) ogryn flesh wash

4) clean up flesh wash with blood red

5) apply blazing orange highlights

6) apply 1:1 blazing orange : golden yellow highlight

7) do black / white / silver first details

Then I applied a watered down chaos black.

They look really dirty and I like it. Next is to clean them up.

Great work! I'm really enjoying the progress you've made. My only suggestion would be to try drybrushing your metallic bits.

1. Base coat any metallic bits black.

2. Load brush with Boltgun Metal or similar color.

3. Wipe brush on paper towel several times to remove excess paint, (final wipe should only leave a little color on the towel)

4. brush across bits, should leave a weathered, tarnished look and leave recesses dark.

I've drybrushed in my old days of painting, I'll give that a shot. I like having the guns black though, should I drybrush it all as if i were leaving it silver, then paint over with black?

So I've gotten the squad to be what I consider Tabletop Quality. They're not perfect, nor will they be considering my novice abilities, resources and amount of time, but I'm happy. I'll post pictures shortly. In my old boxes, I found the green grassy lookin' stuff. What if I paint the bases with scorched earth around the sides and do brown colored sand, then glue on the grass? Does anyone have any other suggestions for bases? Remember, they're primed white but not with any sand or details on them.

New pictures. The lighting is TERRIBLE. When the weather is better I'll go outside, but these aren't decent depictions of how they actually look. Anyway, here's a peek.

Theyre looking much better man, looked a little toich and go an one stage, but it's definately picked up.

I'd like to see some basing done - i'd suggest paint over the primer before adding any gravel/whatever.

What steps would you take to do that? I want to do spacey gray bases, I think they'll look better at my local GW.

Spent most of yesterday on my Sergeant for this squad. It was weird not being on B&C while doing it since B&C wasn't working for me.

Here's the only room in the dorms (the bathroom) that doesn't have insanely yellow light. Too bad it's dark as hell, but this is the truer red that my marines actually have.

Used a much worse camera for this... but they're all at a good tabletop quality, but the bases and the transfers need to be done. I don't have good materials to base nor do I have a dark enough gray

to achieve the look I want to. I also need to get greens to do the grenades, which will lead into me doing the Orks from the AoBR set.

I'm really unhappy with these photos, I'll get better ones tomorrow. There is going to be sun and nothing else to do tomorrow =)

Could I get some C&C please?

That pic you did in the bath room looks much better. He looks really good in that light.

I agree with the need for a wash on the chest eagle..You could try a wash or 2 of Gryphonne sepia, see how it works out.

Over all though looking good, you should be proud.

I did an orgryn flesh and then a black wash on it last night. They just didn't show up in the terrible pictures.

Those are coming along nice :P I guess your 'shopping' list are getting longer :) (if that's the clipper you're using in the last pic, you might want to change that to a better side-flush one?)

- Ohh, fourth squad, next would be figuring out what to do with the company badge ;)

- nice that you've also tackled the eyes on your sergeant, it took me some time to paint those on my minis ;)

- the base: why not use good 'ol dirt? though you might want to sift it to get the proper sizes of the grains. Here're a couple of simple articles

B&C Basing 101

Nothing else to add for now, HTH, cheers!

I think I'm doing 5th Company, but I won't need to decide until I get my dread to that point (I'm doing the dread, termies then the captain in that order) since my Tacs have the arrow pads. I definitely need to invest in clippers, but there are plenty of limitations here at school. I mixed up the process in painting the dread, for anyone curious (I'll post pictures later). I so far I've gone from black basecoat to mechrite red foundation to blood red over the things that are remaining red. That's my plan! Anyone else think the foundation paints smell funny? I'm having one hell of a time deciding what's going to be black/metallic on the dread and what's going to be red. I think most of the legs are going to be black and metallic rather than being painted red.

I found a few cheap assault squads online as my next purchase then I'll be done for a while to save money for paint and new clippers haha.

You could take a look at the dreadnought thread here and/or CoolMiniOrNot for ideas what to and not-to paint on the dread

HTH

Dread has his basic silver and few coats of red going, next is details. I used much more metal in places than most do, but I just forsee the dreadnought as something super mechanical and brutal, not pristine and pretty. But right now I could play with it on a tabletop. I think I'll paint the Termies now while I wait for my Assault Marines (soon to be DC) to come!

The foundation paint definitely has a strange smell!

All my BA are painted from a black base using Mechrite red these days... works really nicely.

Here's my dread using that technique... I have more pics of other stuff too...

Wow, that looks great! Blood Red Highlight?

My dread is pretty bland, I'll get a pic soon. Once I get my terms basecoated, I'll take my BA's outside for better pictures.

I apologize, once again for light and picture quality.

My force, until the Assault Squad I ordered (converting into DC) arrives.

Dread, not finished by any means.

Termies, I've been experimenting with different recipes for red, these are a drybrush heavy approach that I'm really liking.

Goldielox squad, named for the gold paint sprayed on them in a few minutes of boredom in 7th grade.

Nice models!

Nice seeing someone using the classic way of painting blood angels, with a white undercoat. I personally use black undercoat and then basecoat merchite red. Really like how the sergant and the dread are coming along, how about a few pics with painted bases? Have you decided what kind of basing you're going to do? And also: where is your DC and chaplain! :P

Please drop by my WIP threads and leave a comment, don't want to bump them (like i see you did a couple of times over the last pages :P ) unless I have a update.

Keep up the good work, your making your chapter proud!

Seems that the switch to foundation did much to improve your basecoat and general neatness (is that a word?) of the model. The chappy is in the pics, painted by our brother, Mathias! I just need that DC squad!

Indeed the army is going along well :P

I think there's another thing to add to your shopping list? Dunno if somebody has mentioned this already: drill bits and/or pin vise... better to drill out those barrels ;)

Things are good already: the sarg (going by the further pic) looks good on the tabletop already :P

If you do plan to strip the Goldielox squad, I hope the paint do come off... planning to strip the Rhino as well?

Like what Ziggy has said: Keep up the good work and be proud! :tu:

Cheers!
