Heresy Era Imperial Fists

Great work! I'm doing some similar stuff with my heresy-era White Scars.

Are you going to the Tempus Fugitives event in Sept?

About the UM helmet... the first appearance in THHCV is p99 - a John Blanche concept for heresy armour, and it does look a lot like Mk5. The next appearance is p114+p115 on Ultramarines, with Mk4 bolters and a mixed-looking set of armour. Looking through the rest of the UM images the armour continues to be very mixed, right up to Mk7 in some aspects. The Blood Angels appear with the helmet on p173 with Mk6 legs and a Mk5 bolter.

The only Emperor's Child with that helmet I could find is on p355, otherwise they all have the grilled Mk3 earlier on.

IMHO it's a Mk4 or Mk5 variant (I'm tempted to say Mk4 because it's so smooth and less cobbled-together). Since the only images of Imperial Fists are at the end of THHCV I think you'd be perfectly ok to use them. I'd certainly like to see them! Are you going to do any Fists based on the image on p352?

@Ilmarinen:

Tempus Fugitives Event? When and where would that be?

Right, I'll just leave it open for the time being whether I use the Ultramarine helmet for my Fists...we'll see ;)

Hee hee, the pic on p. 352 is what pushed me over the brink and made me do Pre-Heresy Imperial Fists :) I love the MkIII-style helmet in the Pic, and my planned 5-man veteran squad will be entirely equipped with MkIII armour *drool*. If you check out the pics, you'll see I've already got a veteran sarge in MkIII armour.

My understanding is that the Fists - who relied a lot on frontal assault and stubborn defence - would have a lot of MkIII armour (similar to the Death Guard, in some respects), more than most other Legions, anyway. And, since it's my favourite armour pattern, my Fists are gonna have some of it ;)

Looking forward to your White Scars, post a Link so we can see some pics as soon as you have some!

Have a look at Tempus Fugitives.

They ran an event based around The Great Crusade in May, the next one is the Heresy in September (12th and 13th in Nottingham) and the final one in the series is next year for the Siege of the Palace. I didn't make it to the first one, but I'm getting ready for the Heresy event.

My blog has some of my stuff, although I need to update it soon with the more recent things I'm working on (Mk4 bikers for a start).

Wow, looking very nice :) I particularly like your Green Stuff skills, and also what you did to the Bolters - they look really good (by the way, on the pic with all the bolters, the one on the far right with the straight mag sticking out at an odd angle - how'd you do it?). Keep up the good work!

But also take my advice: start painting soon. Putting together and converting can be really fun, but painting can be a pain in the ass, so don't have too many unpainted models lying around at any one time...I'm talking from experience :(

Thanks. The angled clip is from a really ancient bolter (?) I found - I think it may have been from a genestealer hybrid originally. The barrel is cut down from a guard vehicle heavy stubber.

I'm quite looking forward to painting (in my naivety!) as I haven't painted anything for years. I'm finding the converting quite time-consuming, since almost everything needs something altered. They look great in the end, but I wish I could get through them faster! :)

Argh, I know, my pics are never really good...just can't properly handle the camera, and there's always more light coming from one side, throwing shadows and obscuring the details on the pic. Definitely doesn't help that the marine's sprayed black.

I started painting his armour this evening, will post pics tmoro :-)

Anyways, thanks for the comment Raven Angel!

@Raven Angel:

Thanx, I'll try next time!

Update:

Couldn't resist painting my MkII right there and then, so here's the results. He's still missing arms and backpack, since I'm still not sure which weapon to give him. The painting is about 60% or so done, the details are all still WIP.

  • 2 weeks later...

Alrighty.

Hardly an update, since I didn't get round to doing much - I was doing a paint job for someone else (50 helmless SM heads...NEVER AGAIN), but a small ounce of progress there is nonetheless:

The MkII is unfortunately still unfinished:

@Raven Angel:

Concerning the shoulder pads - I really cheated a bit on this one :devil: I so much like the Templar Cross, and given that the Templars originated from the Fists, I supposed it would be ok to use it as a 1st Grand Company marking. But it is also a lot easier to do free-hand than the sodding Fist :lol: Also, quite conveniently, the Pre-Heresy armour variants V and VI - which most of my models have - have a studdded left sholder pad, which again saves me doing the Fist. Hee hee. But I guess now I'm doing banners and the armour variants II-IV I'm gonna have to force myself to do the Fist itself ;)

I think Raven means to create a small stencil for the Fist icon. Piece of card with shape cut out then you just paint in the gaps. Might work or you could use transfers .

Yea thats it. Their was an artical 3 or 4 years ago in White Dwarf about it. As I recall for large flat spaces they recomended plastic like the blister packs are made of to make a templet. For shoulder pads one idea was "panting" liquid soap over a pad and then taking taking green stuff and moulding it over the pad. As it firmed up you cut out the symbol you wanted to paint later. When completely dry you trim off the overlap holding it to the pad and it should come right off. then you have a moulded templat for shoulder pads. The trick they said was the soap which prevented the green stuff from bonding too the plastic of the pad.

Righty...

In a strange, unfamiliar burst of enthusiasm and motivation I did the first vet sarge banner today. I think it turned out quite ok. I decided to freehand it, since I want to hone my skills there a bit...

Whaddaya tink?

(Sorry about the bad quality pics, I had to do them in a badly lit room in the evening...)

I managed to get the Legion, Grand Company and Company markings onto the banner. I quite like the fact it's so red - now the black helmet looks good too, with the red to contrast it.

I'll be trying to make some better pics soon :)
