Black Fists Space Marines

I've done quite a bit of snow recently and got pretty decent results. See the link in my signiture for a few photos! I basically use bicarbonate of soda (NOT baking powder as its different and does bad things a few years down the line) and PVA glue (not wood glue as that goes yellow!).

I mix the 2 ingredients 50/50 and add a little water until you get a paste thats quite runny. You can push it around quite nicely although you can't be too slow as it forms skin after a while.

Whilst the glue is still wet, put your minature in a tub and cover the WHOLE base with bicarbonate of soda. leave it overnight then brush off the excess powder with a fairly large brush. Hit it with some matt varnish to seal everything up and voila.

You can also start getting really snazzy by getting clear acrylic (perspex) rod, heating it and pulling to create icicles which you glue in place before doing the snow effect. Melting snow effects can be done with superglue and gloss varnish (wait until the superglue dries before glossing over it or you end up with a ruined brush ;)) I'll be using this melting effect on my bloodletter bases pretty soon (so it looks like the ground is warping as they tread on it and the snow melts from their deamonic heat or something along those lines)!

Jimmimellows: Thanks man! I checked out your stuff, and it looks fantastic! I'd try your way, but I just dropped $10 on this modeling snow. I think I'll try combining your method and the one I learned together. Thanks! ;)

Crusader: Hahaha. Good one. ;)

As you can see, the two part mold didn't come out fantastically, in fact, its probably two times thicker than the original piece!

Well..going off a tangent again...Bought some supplies... two 20 x 30in foamboard posters, two 21 x 8.5in x 1.5mm (odd measurements) plasticard sheets, a 2oz bottle of extra thick super glue, and a 2oz bottle of extra thin super glue.

Now what...is Shorts making this time... <-- A better question would be 'What is Shorts not going to finish this time..."

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2333.jpg

Ta daa!! Yes, thanks to Blackadder (and my undying want/need to have a Thunderhawk) I finally bit the bullet and started building one. I've always wanted one, but £399 ($622) for a FW one is just way over my budget... So I started building my own.

And as usual, it looks like crap. But, that is why I bought the plasticard, which is far thicker than what I wanted (0.5mm) but they were the biggest sheets I could find. After fleshing out the main hull (which I've pretty much done now) I'm going to nicely layer on the plasticard, and start doing details. Of course, in all Shorts fashion...it won't have any interior details, and it'll probably never be finished. :P

And here, you can see the internals, before I added the top plate. I'm using LEGO pieces to form right angles, and also to make spacers so that the foamboard doesn't collapse on itself.

I've started a thread in the bitz/trade section, looking for various Land Raider pieces, some Land Speeder pieces (for the cockpit) and a Shadowsword main Cannon barrel. If anyone can help, your contributions/trades will be greatly appreciated.

Shorts is going to finish a thunderhawk :P

HA. On a side note... WEEEIIIRRDDDD. As I read this post, Davey Jones JUST showed up in Pirates of the Carribbean 2! Thats..soo...weird...

Also, just cut the left side plasticard. Looks slick. ;)

Progress already! See, this really is going to be finished :P

Alright, heres a quicky before I call it quits on this thing for the night. I cut out some wings, each are two layers of foam board (remind me to cut them individually, then glue them together next time...that was a real pain in the butt). I think they're pretty puny, but with the engines in place, they may look decent. And if I can get engines the same size as those bottles, that'll put the wingspan at 20in, which is 3 more than FW's, so thats not too bad.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2335.jpg

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2336.jpg

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2337.jpg

I also cut the two largest pieces of plasticard for the side walls. I'm pleased with them, since I've always been terrible with p-card more than 1mm thick.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2339.jpg

You may notice in the newest pics, that there is green putty in the cracks. Before I move forward with cutting out plasticard shapes to coat the entire model, I'm going to try to just fill all the gaps, and see if I can run with that, with decent results. My middle finger kind of hurts from using it to brace my knife, so there probably won't be another update from me tonight, its 2AM anyways! :)

Cheers fellas!

I started the day by sanding the putty stuff, to see if I could save my self some work... It didn't turn out very well. The gaps were still pretty gappy, and it also destroyed the smooth texture of the posterboard. :P

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2341.jpg

Well.. Got an hour's work of progress done. Started by adding a grippy-thing from a pen to my xacto knife. So much better!

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2344.jpg

And heres what we have so far. It weighs about a pound and five ounces so far, so probably considerably lighter than the FW one.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2343.jpg

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2342.jpg

I'm pretty pleased with what I was able to finish in an hour, though I only have a bit of plasticard left, and I'm checking around for extra scraps. I may have to go buy some more by the end of the day. :( And to make things slightly worse, I messed up one of the cuts, wasting a hunk of card. I really need to work on cutting these angles...

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2345.jpg

I'll probably pick up more plasticard on my way home from my sister's later. Have to help her move more furniture into her new apartment. :(

Thanks for looking. :P

Wow...lots of extra posts...

Also worked on the bases for my two marines, pinned and mounted them as well. I think they turned out pretty well, I think I'll keep them like this, I just need to weather the marines now. They are a lot more fally-over than I anticipated, but thats okay, I can deal with that.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2352.jpg

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2354.jpg

Okay, so I've fleshed out all the plasticard for the whole thing, sans wings. It all looks pretty decent, just some gapfliing here, some shaving there...except the back piece... That thing is terrible. I don't know what I'll be doing with that, its just all bad.

Also, my graphic design friend told me that my wings (though pretty similar to the render that Blackadder posted) looked pretty similar, but not..right. So he offered to make me a template for them, and I accepted! So he sent those over in about 10 minutes, and I got to work. They look pretty good to me, and after plasticard, they should be pretty decent! The dinky ones are the ones I designed. ;)

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2359-1.jpg

Also...I was thinking about adding turbines to the front wings, like the Thunderhawk Transporter...Kind of like this. I haven't come to the conclusion yet, but I may try it. "We need more power!!"

Thanks for lookin.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, I coated the wings in plasticard, so they're both solid hunks now. And I managed to add the bracing for the wings, which means I can actually put the mock wings on! :cuss

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2396.jpg

I'm still working on how I plan on doing the engines, and I've hardly received any word on bitz for this, but most of those are just detail pieces anyways. I also flushed up the left wing against the plasticard body, and I think it looks great, so I just have to do the right one tomorrow. I am actually quite surprised that it was able to flush up to the plasticard so well, and I'm glad the holes I cut for the LEGO actually fit. :D

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2398.jpg

And I was thinking of holding off on this post, but seeing as I haven't made all too much progress for a while, I think I may as well just throw it up and see what I get for it.

I've started constructing a PDF force for Atalcina, my chapter's home planet. I'm taking several different aspects of FW stuff for these guys, so hopefully they'll look decent. I started with sculpting a breathmask on a Cadian head.

Very nice PDF you have there :P

Are those Lego bitz on the Thunderhawk ;)

The PDF could be seen here http://s3.zetaboards.com/The_Ammobunker/si...3&t=7248204 Its basically the same post, but with a splash of IG involved.

Yes, those are LEGO bitz. They're used to support the main superstructure and to support both the wings. Yes...this is LEGO Heresy!!!! D: D: D:

Hey man, looking really nice so far, I wish I had time to work on mine. I've got a couple suggestions for you,

Regarding your cockpit, I've used two Storm Raven cockpits side-by-side, which you may be able to make fit

gallery_48988_5384_470187.jpg

and for the engines I've got two Storm Raven engines glued end-on-end,

Keep it coming, Cheers,

Jono

Thanks man. I really like that Storm Raven idea, though I'm strapped for cash, and I think my friend may be able to supply me with the bitz from the Landspeeder that I was looking for. I was thinking of using that as a cockpit instead.

And I saw your engine on Blackadder's Thawk thread (my inspiration), I like the idea. How big are they in diameter though? I was looking at semi-large egines for mine and since I've never seen a Storm Raven in person, I can't judge. Thanks for the tips/help. :P

If I might suggest, for your two sided molds, you may consider adding a "key" to one side the forces the mold to line up. I'm not sure how hard that mold stuff you have gets, but as you obviously have Legos, you may try pushing one about half-way down into the "bottom" mold piece and when you press the top mold part down, make sure the Lego goes into the top portion. Once it "sets", it should be fairly easy to get it line up every time, especially if you could use "keys" in more than one place (such as on the four corners or along all four sides). You may also want to try cutting small channels off to the sides of the pieces you want to mold to allow excess green stuff to move into those. I'm not sure if that will get rid of your GS "halos" around the pieces, but it was an idea that I saw I'm thinking about trying if I have a chance.

Good luck and all your projects (and geez you have a lot) look like they turn out well, so keep it up!

I'ma total Lego heretic as well :D If the bit or peice works, why hesitate to use it?

Exactly. And LEGO are the sturdiest/lightest things to use as supports I've yet to find.

Your idea works great, man. Here are a few that I've done, all with fantastic results. I was just testing out a new medium, which is significantly more bendy than green stuff. It was just a shot in the dark to see if it could work. :/ Which it didn't, no sweat! I'll just break down the molds and start over. :D And thanks for the kind words...my Land Raider Exterminus was started in 2008, and hardly even close to being finished yet! :D

Hey Shorts, in the pic the cutting board the engine is on is 1cm squares, so approx 3cm diameter, 17cm long. Once you add the SR cowling to them, it adds quite a bit of bulk to them.

Cheers,

Jono

;) That would be perfect! The PVC piping I bought the other day has an outer diameter of 2.54 cm (1 inch) and when I cut them all, they were 15 cm (with jagged cuts) and unfinished. I might have to do this!.....I just need to locate 8 Storm Raven engines....... :) So much for going 'cheap' on this project... time to hit eBay! Thanks for the tip. :D

Nothing worthy of a picture tonight. Cut the plasticard for the right side of the fuselage, so now both wings are in place. I've been eyeballing the tail end of the hawk, I'm probably going to saw it off and start over. Probably Tuesday or Wednesday though, couple of exams Tuesday morning. Also worth a note that the respirator heads aren't done yet. I'll probably attempt to fill the gaps and decide on if I want to sculpt the viewfinders or make them out of thin card.

Thanks mates. :P

--------------

Quickie before bed.

Put about 23 things on my eBay watch list. Mostly assorted bitz, since only a couple people have been able to give me aid. <_<

First off, pretend that all four of the following models are based off of this. (not my model, found it on Google)

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/2011-05-1420-34-11555.jpg

Second...don't make fun of my paint skiilz. :D

Pilot and Co-Pilot (don't know if I want them flip flopped (pilot on left etc)). They'll both be holding joysticks and each have a hand on the center console which will have thrust controls, commonly seen on commercial aircraft now a days. Like so.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2400.jpg

Next two are the Navigator and Gunner. Yes, the Navigator should be facing backwards and the gunner should be facing (our) right. But I wanted you to be able to see their pretty face. :) The Navigator will be pointing at the Gunner's console, which will have several red blips on it, and he'll be saying something to him while putting his right hand over his earpiece, listening to someone else. The gunner will have his hands splayed out over his console and listening to what the Navigator has to say.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2402.png

On the back wall will be four bolters or pistols, and next to each marine's station he'll have a helmet. I tried picking the ones that would fit each's personality the best, but I doubt that will turn out or even be noticeable.

There may be more creativity here down the road, but I just needed to flesh this out before I forgot. Took me about an hour to find a mock arm for the gunner... And yes, the blue paper they're tacked to should be the right size for the hole I left for the cockpit, so they'll fit. :)

Thanks guys. :( I'd like more depth into the crews, but I don't have enough space to work with...

And so..I started glueing on panels of the Hawk. The wings and cockpit aren't yet glued on, and the cockpit is sitting on LEGO bracing that will support it when its finished. Of course, thanks to my famous handling skills, the pieces are all off...so gap filling and filing is in order. Also, it would have been okay if I wasn't using 'ultra thin' super glue, which is essentially as thin as water. The glue went on fine, but the second the plasticard (this is the main body piece by the way) touched the poster board, the glue was stuck. So I had to rip it off and try to realign it, and that wasn't pretty... The rest of the panels are glued on with medium-viscosity glue now, results are much better, its just that one piece that throws the rest off really.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2418.jpghttp://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2417.jpg

As you can probably see, the top part is junk too. Theres a 2mm lip going around the entire top, so I may either sand it all off, or just throw another layer of card up there, haven't decided yet. I haven't cut the three front pieces yet, since they'll need the grooves for the doorway. And I haven't glued on the back pieces yet because those still look like crap.

Heres the wip cockpit. I think the size is okay, though its going to be cramped for four guys... I don't know how I'll do that, I may have to do some finagling later on down the road. I'll probably end up dremeling holes in the front, and making the pilot/copilot's legs dangle, since they won't be visible anyways. I wanted to add some way for the people to get up there, but that won't fit. So I may have to make it look like the chairs elevate from the level below. I'm not sure yet.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2416.jpg

I'll go about sanding it tomorrow or..whenever. Don't be surprised if its not sanded by the next update XD

The night is still young, only 10PM, so there may be more update later, unless I get stuck in some Minecraft...

Thanks all! :)

Thanks to Penguin of Death, he linked me to the WIP boards with Sukigod's wip Bomba. In this thread was a small tutorial on how to make engine turbines. Quite helpful, slightly difficult. My fingers aren't that nimble at 3 AM, like they used to be. I started out with brainstorming the engine layout. I could do dual fat ones, dual thin ones, or one of each. I went with one of each, I thought it fit nicely. 1" dia and 3/4" dia. All approx 6" (15.24cm) long, though I think I may shorten the thin ones later on.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2422.jpg

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2421.jpg

And I gave the turbines a shot. After looking at this card, I discovered I could easily cut them with scissors! So I cut out the circles in about a half hour, I think. I made a couple extra smaller ones because I had space and I knew I was going to mess up, which I did.

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2423.jpg

And the outcome. I couldn't get the blades to lay as evenly as I had hoped. The center piece is just a blob of putty, a placeholder. I think that this technique holds a lot of potential, I just need to figure out how to get it right...

http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/shortsonfire79/IMG_2424.jpg

Thanks for looking. Time for this Asian to get some shut eye!
