Angels of Vigilance - 7-5-13 Dread/Razor update

So I finally got released from hospital today and first thing I did when I got home was play with my camera and how to fix stuff (colors being funky) in some of the free photo editors out there (GIMP / Paint.net for example).

The main problem is I always take my pictures at night and I got alot of brownish stuff reflecting 'yellowish' light back onto whatever I use to give my models a background with. So I guess I should try dimming lights I don't need / cover up close proximity stuff (or just build a light box...) and I should also print out some colored sheet and see if that fixes anything. Either way I think they came out pretty good in the end thanks to the editting:

As promised a better close up picture of the 'new' Tactical combat squad which shows off a bit more of some of the free hand I added to the armor and some of the weathering I added though I guess I need to get even closer for that to be more obvious. Still have to finish the banner though:

And since I had everything more or less setup, I took a shot of the WIP tactical squad with ML aswell (ML guy will end up getting a banner at some stage):

Well managed to get another squad combat-ready. Most of it was already done about a year ago, just needed to finish some details:

*edit: better picture?

/edit*

Looking at the picture I can already see some major booboo's (and simply a few details I forgot) I need to fix and unfortunately some of the weathering/damage I added seems to be much more noticable in the picture than real life, I'll need to tone that down a little.

For some reason I'm also not entirely happy with them yet, there seems to be something missing (besides the banner for sergeant and making his sword actually noticable). It took me alot of tries to find the colors for the shoulder pads (Forgeworld Blood Angel shoulder pads with the blood-drop green stuffed to look like a crucible), in the end I went with a silver/bright gold combination and I'm still not sure it's 'right'.

Anyway, I'd love to get come c&c on them, what's there to make these guys look more like 'Angels of Vigilance'? (next ones will definitely be getting more green stuff though)

Also, if anyone's got some tips on making photo's, I'd love to hear those. I can't seem to keep my standard at a constant level...

Thanks!

I really like your marines, they are great, especially the termies. Your yellow and battle damages are really top notch. In my pov, if you feel like upgrading them, I would try to give more depth to the shoulder pad chapter symbol (black or devlan mud wash) and chest eagle (a grey highlight for example).

Anyway, I will follow your thread with great interest (and yellow / black marines ftw :D)

hehe thanks guys.

Yea the power sword will be getting an upgraded look. I first need to practice some more with the airbrush though and also try out some different colors, might go more towards a purplish blue, before figuring out how to safely cover up the model to airbrush this and all other swords in the force so far.

The black/eagle is one of the things I seem to have forgotten about, though most of it has some highlighting it just gets washed out in the picture. The chapter symbol I agree could use some more contrast, I've also been thinking about painting it red instead, probably the only color I haven't tried yet that could fit with these colors. It should stand out well against the black shoulder pads but on the other hand I would be making another color more strongly present within the scheme and I'm not sure what to do with the stone bases the chapter symbols rest on.

Someone mentioned words like NY Taxi and that they resemble the Lamenters quite a bit because I used the checker pattern on the power armored marines which got me thinking I should lighten up on that (as in keep it limited to the power armored marines that are part of the 4th company which uses it as it's company emblem). Which does leave me with some open ends to fill for my 1st and 2nd company.

I'm still trying to figure out the history / a story for these guys that would fit them in with the Dark Angels and the little official fluff they have, currently I'm brainstorming towards them being one of the successor chapters that was created to continue the search for the Lion instead of assisting the hunt for the Fallen (assuming the Dark Angels at the fall of Caliban had no clue where the Lion went - he just dissapeared), as well as them being formed with some of the Marines at the head of security / guarding important individuals. Basically something that will fit in with the 'Vigilance' part of their name and the part of fluff that they never leave home without at least a full company to guard it. Though home is pretty close to the Eye of Terror so I assume they are watching for the Lion to return and never take their eye off it.

I have to say your Phoenix Knights are pretty inspiring aswell ;)

I wouldn't be surprised if you see me steal some idea's in the future, I'm already planning some custom made weapons based on some images I saw after seeing your thread. But first, I need to finish some stuff I started long ago before I start building new ones.

thanks guys :)

I guess the ritual knifes might be a cool thing. Also to tie them in with the Deathwing a little.

Honour markings are always cool but I'm terrible at thinking of new icons, I have been thinking about some sort of army badge though like they used to add back in (1st?)/2nd edition of the game.

Anyway, I haven't been sitting still. After a night of fixing stuff I'm a lot happier about the Terminators now, also based on a few tips I received from some of you:

- added some more weathering and touched up some of the old stuff with a more steady hand

- fixed some highlights / added more contrast / blacklining

- fixed some screwups, where I touched the yellow with black for example.

- finished a few details I forgot

- made the grass on the base look a little more 'dead'/dry

Just leaves me with the usual stuff to finish: Banner and Power weapon.

More pics than you asked for:

Been a while since I updated, here's what I've been up to:

http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w221/deathwing70/Angels%20of%20Vigilance/Dreadnought/20130507_172653_zps33bfaf04.png

The camera really picked up all the chipping, it doesn't look as heavy in real life. I'm pretty happy with the freehand on the banner, a few imperfections in there but because I just had to go and add all those curves I didn't make it easier for myself... I'm considering adding some burn marks at the damaged edges and not sure what to do with the backside. Also I see I have to redo the gems.

It's a shame you can't really see the reflection of light on the plasma cannon on the pictures, it kinda 'shines' purple (total fluke when I was giving it a really thin purple wash). Anyway I'll say 1 more thing, there is 1 major flaw on this dreadnought... see if you can spot it smile.png

Here's another thing that's been keeping me busy (aka sucking the life out of me and probably the reason it took so long for an update - this thing really depressed me at some stage, I just couldn't get the right tone of yellow I wanted).

At the end it was really bright, then I figured I wanted to add some 'smoke'/dirt effect from the exausts and kinda overdid it... Too late to fix that now... I guess the dark/dirt effect does kind of represent the fact it's a transport vehicle and will be used to drive through burning cities and other smoking piles of ruins in between battles.

I'm not sure if I should still add chipping to it though, might overdo it but then again there are some ugly spots on the model that can be hidden perfectly with it msn-wink.gif
