Come fellow Word Bearers

Hi, though i bear the word only since a fex weeks, i think it would be better to use regular CSM which you then convert, because TS and PM are from very distictive chaos legions. i have myself blended CSM and berzerker bits to figure my assault troops, to make them less khornate. Word bearers aren't that comfortable with monotheism, but you surely can figure a way to use "more resistent marines" whithout referring to it as a MoN. The thousand sons are a little trickier, since WB aren't very fond of sorcerers. Either way, it's your call!

For the matter of "impurity seals", they are present ( in the WB novels at least ) but they aren't neccessarily required, many WB use their skin, or their armour as a support for their writings.

I personnaly use chaos black- scorched brown-mechrite red- red gore- baal red.

-'black line' with a 70/30 Mechrite/Black mix,

Black line?

'Black linning' is kind of like a reverse highlight. You take a darker colour and paint it into the recesses. Its not a wash although the paint should be fairly watered down.

For example my Erebus mini. I've used the Black/Mechrite mix for the 'Black linning'. You can see the shadow it creates between the silver and red on the chest plate and shins. It really helps give the paint job definition.

On the second example i've used Dark Flesh for the 'Black linning'. It is particularly evident in the finger joints of the power fist and on the marines foot. This is a very extreme example but i'm pretty happy with the result.

I hope this helps :D

Regarding the im/purity seals, go for it! I wish i had have added more of that kind of ornementation to my Word Bearers.

Looking forward to seeing the fruits of your labour. Good luck B)

I agree with Tanith (as usual, lol) your friend is confuzzled... impurity seals everywhere

As far as the painting of my WB's, I start with a black primer undercoat, then a Fortress Grey undercoat (have yet to try it without the black but it might work), then I use Red Gore for the armour (thin coat), then I hit any areas that are gonna be bone, brown or gold coloured with a coat of Snakebite Leather, then hit the bone spots with Bleached Bone, the "leather" areas with Scorched Brown, any gold area with Shining Gold, then I hit the metal bits with Boltgun Metal. After that I go back and re-cover/touch-up the Red Gore areas then use the washes mentioned before.

There are a lot of varied theories on the using of cult troops in an WB army. I personally have a squad of berzerkers. I swapped out the helms on them but kept the 'zerk weps and armour and then painted them like the rest of my WB's. ( see The Prophets post on page 12 of this thread for a cool way to differentiate WB zerks) As for PM's and TS's cult troops I would do them as counts as and not use the TS and PM models for it....

There are some cool examples of ways to do this here in this thread and the WIP and Halls of Honour sections here.

I just ordered 2 chapter upgrade sprue for the Dark Angels. For those who don't know, the kits pretty much got the awesome Dark Angel Veterans boxed set PLUS special weapons and icons, etc. Only downside is that you have to wait a week or two before they get it into your Games Workshop store. Cheap, too. I'm gonna assemble the vets as chosen, probably, and am gonna use that power mace in poor mockery of you guys' Dark Apostle's weapon. Where are the bid fat evil maces from?

Thanks, BTW, I'm gonna try a couple of test minis before I actually decide on the paint scheme though, plus I need a couple of minis to practise on anyway seeing as I'm probably the worst painter posting in this thread. I'm so~ envious of you guys that paint so awesomely!

Thanks for the help so far!

About both Berzerkers and purity seals. I have a unit of 'Assault Veterans', whom are really just count-as Berzerkers.

Though it's not clear on all, they all have at least one purity seal, most have two.

Actually, every marine in my Word Bearer host has at least one purity seal. This model is still PIP, but I think purity seals really enhances the WB astethic, and makes them look unique and not just like red chaos marines.

They are easy to make yourself, my seals are made from paper, though as of late I have been starting to use greenstuff more. But all the seals on the pics above are just ordinary printing paper.

printing paper? won't they fall off at the first touch?

nicely painted and kitbashed models by the way, better than any of mine. may i ask how you got the red?

They don't fall off because they are attached with glue. :P

I then glued a thin slice of plastic rod at the top of the paper, the part which is supposed to be attached to the armour. For better results, use a small blob of green stuff and a small stick. place the gs at the top, and gently press into it with the stick. It will then look like a wax seal.

This is all done before painting, so the scripture is painted on.

The red for the marines at the top is made using a black undercoat, a layer of mechandrite red, then blood red, then a highlight using a mix of blood red and macharius solar orange. Then a final highlight at the really sharp edges using macharius solar orange mixed with some white I think. After that, a baal red wash. Then I paint the metals and details, and give the model a Devlan mud wash. Some of the details, like the cables, were only given a green wash, no devlan wash. But those are the basics really.

Hoping to get a few new pics up by the end of the weekend....I've got 1 of my Havocbacks (Rhinos) done, other than weathering which I will probably not do for a bit as I need to pick up some powders. (And on that subject can anyone recommend a good relatively inexpensive set?) I finished, other than basing, my termies, and am part way through my first Land Raider. Still needing to soak my dred in the Simple Yellow (Green) that I picked up and start over on it.

Love the "assault/zerk" squad there Tot. I'm guessing that some of those chain axes are the FW ones? Very nicely done. I love how you do your studded helms.

Argel, the mace that I used comes from the chaos warrior box from the Warhammer Fantasy Battles range. There's an insane amount of bits that are usuable between that kit, the mauraders kit, and the empire flagellants one. I think that as for that huge mace that Lanparth put together, I'm guessing he used the Chaos Terminator Lord/Sorc kit, the chaos warrior mace, an some various spikey bits trimmed from other parts. :P I'm sure he could elaborate.

As far as painting goes, it just takes what I (and my guitar teacher from 30 years ago) call the "3 P's"....Practice, Patience, Perserverance, lol. Just take your time, don't be afraid to make mistakes, and most of all have fun. Although I'm no where near as good as some of these guys, I'm pretty sure they'd tell ya the same thing....

The 'Berzerkers' are really easy to do. They are just a mix of FW mk.5 armours and armour bits from the CSM sprue. The axes are also from forgeworld.

The only bit of real converting is the cables on the thighs on some of them. In the two first pics in my post above, the ones to the right have home-made cables, and the ones to left (and in the middle in the first pic) have Forge World legs.

My idea was that the squad should all have older types of armour, predominantly mk.5 (because that's my favourite). However, I only bought 5, and wanted a squad of 10. Luckily the CSM plastic box contains mk.5 torsos, some modified mk.5 helmets, but no mk.5 arms, shoulderpads or legs strangely enough. The most characteristic part of the mk.5 is the cables, so I set about doing cables on ordinary legs, then got myself a squad.

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/totgeboren40/Daemons/Veterans007.jpg

The champ has a mk.5 chestpiece with a chaos star, whilst the one to the right has modified GW legs and a FW mk.5 torso.

http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i95/totgeboren40/Daemons/Veterans002.jpg

I also mixed in some 'crusader'-type helmets, mostly because I think they look cool, and secondly because they have the same design as my Terminator helmets (who use modified Paladin helmets). Only the standard bearer has a non-mk.5 torso. I kinda regret giving him that now, the idea was that he should stand out slightly, but now I feel he looks kinda odd in the unit.

GOLD EDITION! YEEEEEEEEEEEES! :P :verymad:

I just sacrificed three hours to stay at work and buy the new hype. Now I have one hour to the bus and more than two hours to get home, but I really don't care with all this shopping adrenaline in my veins. Thank you Chaos Gods, and ADB for writing such wonderful things!

I was hoping to have the funds available to at least have gotten ahold of a "Silver Edition" but looks like it's not gonna happen... =(

Wait...Anyone wanna buy a kid?!? LOL

I'll just have to check back when I have the 30 bucks free and hope they still have a copy around, otherwise I'll be waiting impatiently for TheProphet to start a "spoiler" thread, hehe

P.S. No pics yet as the wifey took her camera with her over the weekend and left me high and dry :D

Talk about being out of the loop. I was like "Gold Edition? Hurr derp?".

Is the art any good? B)

I really hope so, cause that's why I went for gold. Every picture will probably be found on the internet soon though.

I can't help you with the kid, but I'll give you any spoilers you want after probably two months, since I'll be abroad when my book arrives. (NO, I won't give you my adress ;) ) But if you do manage to sell your kid, watch out on ebay for extremely priced ones. There's already one there now, even though it is not yet out of stock at Black Library and probably haven't been shipped to the seller.

Still could use some suggestions on a good, relatively inexpensive set of weathering powders, and which colors would be best to weather these with :D

Cool Havoc Launcher! If we only could take four on each vehicle...

I'd say you could go with Black Soot from forge world. It ain't so expensive considering their prizes and I figure it would look awesome.

Not too impressed with them either.

Dred looks cool, cultists look ok, reg marines are not bad....but where's the Dark Apostle? and what's with the "pseudo-dino" skull on the termie?

and no, giving the termie a power maul does not make him a DA....Just saying.....

P.S. But I suppose it is nice to have access to something other than Black Legion for Last Stand.....

I think the dino skull is a stock termie model; he appears a few times higher up with lightning claws.

Either way, I like the bright colors, although there isn't enough contrast with the silver trim.

Um, I run as a DIY warband in the Last Stand. You can play anything you can make a colour scheme for :(

However, with everything else I'm in agreement, especially the Dark Apostle. We're so much more awesome than that :)
