ultra-meet 4

Went into my local store and had a game today. Reminded me why I enjoy playing the chaps from this forum so much. Guy was possibly the most substandard player I have ever come across in someone under 9 years old.

The game was so bad that it went 7 turns and not 1 round of HtH. Not one. Objective based and this chap chose a table quarter that had no objectives and just sat there trying to snipe me. Was apparently petrified of my "deep striking" deathwing.

At the end of the game I held 4 out of 5 objectives. I only have 4 squads of terminators. Only highlight of the game really was when my Land Raider immobilised iteslf on a blade of grass. Yes, the game was that bad that my own LR being immobilised was a highlight. Oh, that and him trying to insist he could rend my LR to death with sniper rifles :(

*sigh*....april cant come fast enough.

Rhino chassis with a bit of luck, not AV14... what was his reasoning?

Either he was thinking of the old rending rule or he was just confused. Or trying to cheat. Either way I set him straight.

Sounded an utterly thrilling game. Great one to work out those tactics I keep hearing so much about :D

As elitist as it sounds I hate those sorts of games where the opponent has a flawed plan and despite better knowledge and understanding of the game you cant persuade the player to rethink it. One of the biggest reasons why I dont like to play new players with anything over 1000 points (by new I mean first 6 months, depending on how many games they get).

There is just too much to the game that you cant enjoy a solid game with newer players at above 1000 points until they get more practice. Its a shame really because some people buy a whole 1750 army straight off the bat without learning the basics and then get absolutely trounced in the first 6-9 months before eventually assuming it was the army and either quit or buy a new army.

If only they took the time to go through an escalation campaign or follow "Wans steps" of 500 points for 4 games, 750 for 2, 1000 for 4 then 1500 for a long while. I think it builds better players

It will be nice to play against marine players with better tactics. The guys I have been playing of late have not been that new but their tactics have been under developed, either through new armies or new players. Being a gaming club chairman I am trying to play the newer players as much as possible to give them pointers, it means that my win/loss ratio is a bit skewed of late. I am sure you kind gents will redress the balance in April for me.

One for GC08, I am sure its going to make your eyes roll. The chap had 2 squads of scouts. Snipers and CC just sitting in the open ground. Didnt move, didnt infiltrate. Didnt do anything. Didnt even do anything when my LR was immobilised within range and CLEAN LOS of my TLHB's. I shot to death 2 scout squads over 4 turns making both of them run off the table.

As to what Wan was saying. This is one of the those who just wouldnt listen. I reminded him that he could infiltrate his scouts. I mentioned that his deployment was not ideal. All to no avail. After a while I just stopped saying anything and let him do his own thing.

Honestly, the only reason I didn't just walk away at turn 4 was that I didn't want this guy trying to claim that he beat me and because this was my first game in 3 weeks and possibly the only game for another 2-3 weeks.

Well, I'm hoping that the new Battle Missions book will encourage some more variation in play and armies. At first glance I was a bit dissapointed by it, but the more I'm reading and thinking, the more I can see this having a good impact on the games.

Still think there is more they could have done with it though *grumblegrumble*

Actually, from the the ultrameets we have had I think I am the only non-englishman who attends.

Unless you include scottish people.. looks at Cadarn

Since when was Cumbria in Scotland? Bah, to me you're all either Southerners or foreigners.

That's almost as good as my sister thinking Cwmbran was in Cumbria. Lol.

What's the crack with points levels for the weekend? If I put together a few lists what would be a good mix to prepare for? (taking into account group games etc.)

I think they look quite fun. I am thinking of converting up a decent Kill Team as well. Maybe paint it almost like a crusade or honour squad. Each marine from a different chapter. Get to try out different painting skills as well.

Id loveto do the BFM idea but considering i may miss the nextcouple of meets, i figured if we stuck to the one big game, that way we can get some grudge matches in too.

All depends on how many nids turn up too.

Ive always thought the further north you went the further back in time you go (and stranger the accent gets).. i was in yorkshire with the wife once and an elederly chap told me i had a strange accent.. the cheek of it.. my accent is typically british sir.. albeit i have a strange deep voice garrrrrr

I'm from Andover in the south, and to me, everyone north of Stone Henge is a northerner! :D

Definitely get yourself a couple lists. I'm taking a 1,500pts list, 1,750pts list, and have 2 variants I can utilise if my opponent want's to face a list without Honour Guard! (chickens)

Speaking of your sis, she mentioned she was thinking about collecting an Eldar army if memory serves me? Have you convinced her to become "one of us"?

Yeah I would enjoy having a few games against various people so any more than a single large scale game is a bit much unfortunately.

Besides have we got enough Tyranid players for all of the Marines players being able to a game?

Be impressed brethren, as I'm pretty much creating and painting a new army for this event. So far I have 1000 points half painted. I'm officially sick of metallic paint right now. But needs must, and the Iron Wolves need their signature colour. Now the real question is whether I splash out on the new veteran dread before the event or make do without a Dread in the list.

Oh Cadarn... you really want an impartial piece of advice from this forum? Or are you just wanting the chearing section on your shoulder screaming "Get the Dread" to be in a different voice for a change?

Though, as a freak moment of genuine honesty, I would say that unless the dread is fulfilling a vitally missing part from your army then I would not get it. As "nice" (personally sick of dreads, having had to magnetise 8 dread arms and 2 AOBR ones a couple of months ago, is not a pretty job as it was my first go at it and I was a "Little" impatient :)) as it is, it is £20+ of more plastic crack which no matter how nice you paint it, will still be the same as Bobby the 11 year olds.

If I am going for a Veteran I would either convert or go the whole hog and get a Forge World one. Though thats just me.

Sadly though I am currently buying up square base models so no new models for me, though I doubt many of even the regulars will have seen all of my collection yet (either Ork or Marine). Reminds me, I am still playing Idaho with my green skins anyone else want to face them or shall they only come out for the one game? I will be bringing the following lists:

1500 that I have been play testing (possibly taking it to the next GT - its not cheesy though, see last battle report for it)

1750 small tournament list

1750 1st, 4th and 10th list

As to speaking funny, I am originally from Somerset (for non UK think farmer, backwards ville - to those who still live there, come on you know its true ;) ) so I have been known on occasion to speak like a true country bumpkin and end sentences with little more than "Ahhh tis true". So I cant really slag off our cousins from the north for talking un-proper :)

Wan

Hmm. Well I don't need the CC punch, as I already have plenty of that. What I'm missing is some 24"+ ranged weapons. Plenty of bolters, Assault Cannons & Multimeltas, but nothing with real range.

So, its either a Ven Dread, with three support emplacements as back up, or another unit of troops (in my case that means Terminators). I'd need both to take the list up to 2000 (if I want to game with it beyond this event). Tactically it makes sense to get some more Termies, but fun wise it makes sense to go for the Dread. Ultimately I'd need both, so it's just a case of deciding which.

I'm looking forward to testing this list out at the meet as I've never played an Uber list before. @Waaanial, I'd be happy to give the greenskins a shot, as I reckon hordes will be the main thing I'd struggle against, but it all depends on what you want to be using. Any opponent is going to be a challenge for me with this one.

I will happily accept the challenge however my Orks cant do hoard. I made a decision ages ago to not go down that route so I cant field more than about 70 boys (which sounds like a lot but in practice its not that much).

My lists generally are mech and relatively elite.

Still I think I would be able to come up with a challenging list for people to do battle against. If I manage to finish a deff roller in time I might manage to be a little more than challenging :D No lootas though, hate the things and despite how Orky they sound they are a little too "reliable" for an amalgamation of random weapons (come every combination of weapons ending up as S7? Really?)

If you want range and reliability then (depending on the codex) go for some Autocannon Dreads. Not parroting as I have been running mine for about 6 months and the only game it want impressive was against a Space Wolves army with few Rhinos that were well hidden the majority of the game.

Alas Idaho, my dear sister started to look at Daemons and then on realising how costly they would be to put together a decent list started thinking about Eldar...and then bought Blood Bowl which is now gathering dust on one of her shelves. I think she may have a dabble in WFB as she'll be getting some Skaven at some point in the not too distant future and as for 40K it remains to be seen.

heh heh heh, this made me chuckle in my not too disimilar Salopian (Shropshire) dulcet tones!!!

A number of times I've been mistaken for a member of our West Country bretherin in accent but when I tell people that I'm from Shrewsbury originally more often than not the repsonse is 'Ah, you're from Wales'... :/

Well, that would require me having a third unit of Terminators AND the Dread sorted by then. Possible, but we shall see. The nice thing is that with two elite forces fighting, even a large game isn't going to take all that long. :cuss

I'm pretty certain I will get the Dread now, looking at my list. It rounds it out a bit more, fits in with my fluff and will make the army look pimp when all laid out, which is the most important thing.

Indeed. At 1750 my army has 25 models. At 2000 it has 26. I like it as I can fit the whole thing into the small carry case and since only the termie chaplain is metal it doesn't weight 500000000000kg. It also only takes me about a minute to get them out of the case and ready for battle.
