Look absolutely stunning, all of them!

I'm a fan of the bone shoulderpads but I'm really torn as to which style I prefer more - the bone or the pure white. I haven't made any models for my own crusade (yet!) but I suppose it'll come down to which one is easier for a completely novice painter. Would you say getting a completely pure white shoulder is easier, or would going the bone route be simpler? I watched a very good video on AwesomePaintJob yesterday showing how to paint the standard (if there can be said to be a standard) color scheme for the Black Templars and it showed using a black base, then I believe Codex Grey next, with layer upon layer of thinned out White on top of that. I think there was another layer of grey on top of the Codex but I can't recall. I'm pretty OCD though, and I don't like seeing chunks missing from armor and battle scarring and damage and all of that, so I might like the pure white purely for that reason

@ SterbTemplar: I'd like to, but I have until the 5th before I'm packing up for more traveling abroad. Not much time to get more done before I'm out of the game again til mid July. Surprisingly fast response, by the way.

@ Trignama: "For once" eh? Fair enough, this thread was buried far enough back that newer brothers wouldn't know about it already. I always felt a bit odd looking at others' work over the last few months and giving advice/criticism when I couldn't demonstrate the right way to do things. Someone's gotta show you Neophytes how it's done. :P

@ Eberious: Strange, considering I looked at your bikes and went "Damn, wish I thought of that!" a number of times. I think between the two of us is the perfect Space Knight on Bike template. As for my Chaplain, well, now you know who Jasper is :o . Could be worth digging back through the subforum for the Blood Duel results to get a few laughs and insight into the whole joke. Those checker marks you pointed out I actually tried first on the one Initiate's shoulder plate (hence the overhead). It was one of those "You know, I don't think I ever actually tried this" moments that had such promising results I had to find another excuse to use it.

@ Blacklight: Hm...well, both methods have their ups and downs. White is the more orthodox approach, and there is a quick and relatively easy method to it. Instead of priming black as Les (good tutorial by the way) recommends, many simply keep the shoulders separate from the model and prime them white instead of black, meaning all you have to do is add some shading and the black trim. So, it can be relatively quick and easy. The downside is that unless you use decals for the insignias, you'll have to paint black on the white anyway, which is always a pain in the ass to touch up due to poor coverage. The other downside is that the method Les suggests is not nearly as easy as he makes it look, and very, very time consuming if you want a real smooth white. On the other hand, the bone color takes a little longer to do (there's a tutorial buried back in this thread) but it is much easier to cover up black with Bleached Bone than it is Skull White. One effect that might be worth trying is to use a dark brown instead of black over the bone shade, giving the whole thing a dirtied look instead of the white alone. In short, it's a matter of taste and objective.

@ All: Thanks much for the compliments, I've been looking forward to getting back to my brushes for months, and it showed in my uncharacteristically dedicated work ethic (all of these recent models were painted up in the span of roughly a week and a half). I've got some bits that I ordered myself for XMas which I'm bashing into the last few Initiates my list calls for, and if I'm very lucky and very diligent, I'll be able to post something before another hiatus.

Edit: By the way, not so much as a giggle for the A D-B signature on the Vindicator's Big Book of Awesome? And here I thought I was so clever.

Thanks for the tips! One more thing - in Les' videos he often uses a micron pen to mark lines and to make the writing on the Purity Seals and, in the Black Templars' case, the inscriptions on the shoulderpads. How well do you think a micron pen would work in regards to making the Templar cross on the white instead of using either a transfer or painting it? The lines look incredibly good in the video, but I don't know if the quality is great in real life or not.

Blacklight- I used Micron Pens a while myself. They are fine for fine detail work like scripture, so long as you grant the ink sufficient time to dry before handling/varnishing (roughly 3 days to be safe). As for making crosses, not so much. The lines show very clearly when filling in spaces such as the large parts of a cross. It's really not that hard to freehand them with a paintbrush, given time and practice. There's a link to a diagram buried in this thread somewhere.

TemplarCoyote- I'm not 100% sure, really. I ordered a bunch of Ravenwing bits off of ebay (so logically, it is in one of the DA sets) but as for the specific kit I am not entirely sure.

Everyone else- Thanks a million, as weird (sad?) as it is, encouragement from strangers on the internet fuels my production significantly. I've got a whole lot of infantry models (8 initiates and a Castellan ) I slapped together today after finally getting the last of my bits shipments in the mail, and Emperor willing, I'll get them done before leaving again.

Think you might be right there, a combination of the two would be pretty sweet! Going to use the checks on one of the crusader squads as a squad marking. Never used it on BT's as like you didn't know if I would work, that and I generally have a ocean of unpainted models(or half painted ones).

Well, I've been hitting the paint pots super hard (about 8-10 hours a day for the last few days :D) and managed to get my last 8 Initiates finished. The Marshal will just have to wait til I get back in the summer, seeing as i have just about 2 days til departing for Geneva and lots of related busywork to get done.

So first, group 1:

Whew! Hard to imagine that in the 2 or 3 weeks I had this break, I managed to just about double my army. When I get back, it's gonna be more tedious vehicle painting, seeing as I have all the Initiates and Neophytes my list needs. A LRC, another Rhino (ugh), and some terminators are in my distant future I hope.

C&C welcome as always, as are idolatry, worship, and tribute...

Thanks much for the praise Trig. Now then, I lied...kinda. To myself anyway. I couldn't resist scratching the itch in the back of my mind from that damn marshal just sitting on my desk, half painted, angry...so I wasted what little time I have and got him finished up.

Presenting, Marshal Jonas!

My crappy camera skills did a superb job at highlighting the sloppier areas on a single model  . Still, he's done, and overall I am pleased. Now. it's back to lurking and teasing the Neophytes (and Wilhelm) til July.

Thanks much for the praise all, glad I could get so much done before starting another painfully long hiatus. As for you, Dannis, you had better follow through on that promise. I've been waiting to see more of your work for far too long ;)

Haha thanks, I'll do my best. Even though I picked up my brush several times since I updated my thread the last time, life was still to hectic. I'm hoping to get all my hobby stuff to my new place this weekend so that I can finally do some more stuff. I'm also still quite busy with an article.. and then there's a new internship coming within a hospital.. when you just thought life would get a little quieter.. :P

Keep hearing this, never aksed why. "painfully long hiatus" you in the forces or?

Good progress on the army FP. I've been doing BT's since the limited edition EC came out for that 1 weekened and can't say that I have even one full squad full painted yet never mind most of a usual gaming size army. I have a ocean of grey platic and primed black stuff though :)

Ha, no, I'm in a study abroad program for my Masters in International Relations. So far I've spent 8 weeks in Vienna and another 8 in Bangkok, now I'm in Geneva, which will be followed by London and Leiden. Having a deadline was good inspiration for cranking out as many finished pieces as possible over my short holiday break. I'm still a bit shocked myself that I accomplished so much.
Ah I see, and damn thats a lot of traveling. Hey maybe we meet up for a game when you are in London, I don't live in london but hey never know. can arrange to meet up. Put a face to the name. Edited by Eberious

I dunno about all that. I left the army at home for one thing, and for another this program keeps me pretty damn busy past the first week or so in any new area. At the most I'll probably just go hunt down GW HQ and take a gander around one day for giggles. Appreciate the invite all the same though.

Besides, my models look better than my face

Wow these are really well painted, I'm amazed at your dedication to your army, it's going soooooo slow for me.. I love the Black Templars and these are impressive! I really like the biker lancers but I would like to see more conversions :D

Mighty fine Templars!
