The Tyrant Rises - Update 5/18/15 - Tac Marines Done

Recommended Posts

Time for another update. I feel like starting to add some fluff to my marines as I make them. So to start things off...

Balathu

Balathu was recruited from Badab Primis itself. In his youth he had joined a local hive gang to survive and became a ruthless murderer. When the Astral Claws went throughout the hives to recruit, one of their number was attacked by Balathu, who saw it as a chance to prove his worth and either join the astartes or elevate his position within the gang. He was defeated, but not without nearly slitting the marine's throat. Normally this type of attitude would not be tolerated within the astartes, but with Huron's drive to expand his chapter to the strength of a full legion Balathu was given a shot, he clearly had the martial talent. Once within the ranks of the Astral Claws his brutal attitude made him a perfect fit for the Retaliator squads that were being formed. He served amongst their number for a decade before a lucky greenskin managed to take his left leg. The bionic replacement slowed him down to much to keep up with his brother retaliators and he was re designated as a Tactical marine. He mostly keeps to himself and most of his battle brothers keep a wary eye on him. He still keep the knife he nearly killed a marine with when he was a ganger. His armor is an unusual mix with a modified MK III helmet, MK VI shoulder pad, MK V torso and MK VIII vambraces.

Next up...

Kuri

Kuri is the strong silent type. Not much is known about him by his battle brothers except for his complete reliability. He is large, even for an astartes and carries a modified Multi-Melta. He rarely talks except for the random attempts at humor every now and then which usually falls flat. Due to his mysterious origins it is speculated that he could actually be one of the Tiger Claws who were assimilated into the chapter. He uses a modified MK V helmet and shoulder guard as well as an assault pattern Multi-Melta.

Now a note on the models themselves. Balathu's bionic leg comes from a Tyranic War Veteran. His helmet and vambraces were sculpted on. The helmet was originally a beaky.

Kuri is more heavily converted. The multi-melta and back pack are from the Legion of the Damned model, his helmet is also sculpted. The legs are two pairs spliced together in order to get the pose of him stepping on the rock. Its the legs that are straight from the command squad box and another random one which is bent.

And a little preview of something I'm working on for them, since i rarely show any actaul WIP pics and this is a WIP log. The brownstuff was just put on and will be sharpened up considerably once it is dry, still super wip.

I wonder who that could be?...

Excellent work, brother. My favourite wip blogs this year so far have been yours, 1000heathens and SCC's. It's the individuality and characterisation of each marine that's impressed me, alongside inspiring modelling and painting. My hat's off to you. ;)

Edit: I forgot to mention Bulldoguk. Oops. :P

Sure, I already had an idea for his post war fluff. I was thinking of having him slowly slip into madness and Khorne worship, but now I don't know if that fits his underhanded nature.

I've been toying with the idea of making some red corsair versions of the same guys from my squad. Obviously not all of them would have lived through the war though. My army is meant to show them at that last big battle on that moon against the Red Scorpions before the siege itself.

if you made Balathu after the war, he so has Lord/Captain writen all over him, who else would be trusted to lead marines on raids that a guy that no one really likes to get close to.

cool stuff, really nice army

my 8 year old nephew has started to get into 40k, he was sat next to me at the weekend when i was reading this thread and asked if he could try and paint a marine, when i asked him what colour his words were "the silver and blue ones, they looked bad arse"

so thumbs up dude you got your self a little fan there

looking forward to seeing more

Actually the only part of the model that is the legion of the damned is the gun its self (plus the hands that are attached to it) and the backpack. Everything else is plastic, including the arms. I didn't use the metal model because it had too many flames and skulls to make it worth while.

Time for another update. No new painted models today, just some more progress on Armanneus Valthex.

For those who don't know who he is, Valthex is the Master of the Forge for the Astral Claws and the man who re built Huron after the Badab War. I basically envision him as a sort of mad scientist, but not crazy, just detached. He doesn't care if his research into technology has negative outcomes. Knowledge is more important then other people lives.

In these pics he is being held together by sticky tac. I still have some more putty work to do, mostly on his back pack and his wrist, also still need to find something to put on the top right mechandrite.

and a black and white pic to get rid of the distracting colors.

And some pics of him in pieces so you can see the robe and hood I sculpted for him better plus the support arm for the conversion beamer.

Comments and crit welcome. Like I said there is still more work to be done on him, but so far I am pretty happy with him. As far as a color scheme goes I am thinking all silver with black robes and maybe a red helmet and back pack? I am worried that the red will clash with the blue on his shoulder, thoughts?

I have a few comments to add here. First, you have really outdone yourself with the Valthex model. I love the optics and the whole conversion beamer with servo harness integration is stunning. Second, how about a metallic red for the armor or perhaps alternating plates of red and silver. You may just want to go with a heavily chipped red with alot of silver showing through underneath. That could symbolize his allegiance shifting from the mechanicus ties of his past training and his true allegiance to the tyrant. Just some food for thought. Finally I would suggest that you read Blood Reaver. It may have some insight into the Tyrant and his Legion that may interest you. I highly recommend it.

I actually have read Blood Reaver and love it. Although much of whats stated in their about the Astral Claws is post chaos worshiping. One thing it did inspire in me though is the drive to make Variel my apothecary. I just need to figure out if he got his bionic leg before or after the fall to chaos.

Dear lord, that techmarine gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling, great job man!

On a side note, Variel didn't lose his leg until his service with the Night Lords (pick up Fear the Alien and read the short story, The Core. A D-B stated that the events in the Core happened after Blood Reaver). Pre-excommunication, he still had all four limbs.

ok, thats what I thought. I read the core back when it came out and forgot a lot of the events in it. Was just about to go re-read it. I remember not caring much who this Variel guy is when I first read it since I had no clue who he was.

Also 100th post! :D
