Molloch
Very nice conversion work on Valthek there mate - what bits did you use for the conversion beamer?
Natanael
Very cool Techmarine. I only think that some of the cables are a bit big for what they are supporting. Maybe the stuff are too small for the cables :D But nice work anyway. - Natanael
nurgling6688
thanks! Almost all of the bits for the beamer come from the techmarine servo harness. The barrel is a part from the plasma cutter. the part underneath is from one of the claws, the part connecting it to the harness is several of the arms from the harness. The only part not from the techmarine is the middle part from the terminator's assault cannon.
nurgling6688
Quick update. Started painting Valthex, however his servo harness still is not done being built. The main body was the first part I finished so got the honor of receiving paint first as well. The arms should be quick to follow, going to prime them later today. Some of these pictures are kind of dark, sorry. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/valthex1.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/valthex2.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/valthex3.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/valthex4.jpg and a shot to show off his hood. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/valthex5.jpg Comments and crit welcome. I'm still toying with the idea of making the highlights on his helmet warmer (more orange-ish) I did them in a cool tone since everything else is. Thoughts? Also quick poll, I'm considering adding snow to the bases of this army, what do you think? Thanks.
Vulkan454
Looks good. As you said make the highlights 'warmer' to attract the eye from the cold metal and blue. Also the helmet looks a little purple and pinks to me, is it the photo? Vulkan
Tyrannicide
That's one badass Techmarine. I'd hate to be on the receiving end of anything on that servo-harness.
Olis
Nice Master of the Forge - his cloak is very nicly done. I think you should leave his helmet as is - it has a certain gravitas currently painted as it is. I think snow on the bases doesn't complement the Claws as well as, say, a more traditional dirt + partial grass base. But that's more me visualizing things in my head than anything else. Rubble would be good - fluff-wise. :)
Rob_Loken
He's looking great. I've gotta say the metal one looks better than the "Finecast" one, man the more I look at mine the more screw ups I find. Servitors are nice though. Are you going to be fielding him with Servitors?
Machinepriest
BEST ASTRAL CLAWS Ever... Seriously. I thought they had a pretty uninteresting scheme at first, but your Astral Claws made me change my mind totally. These are bloody awesome. Seems a lot of people have been bitten by the Badab bug :) Can't wait to see more.
arne
Looking verry god there! On the basing matter i would love to see an orangy dust wastland style, to complement the metalics and blue details!
nurgling6688
Thanks everyone. As basing goes I decided to say Feth it! and added snow to my scouts bases using a technique i found that uses baking soda. Then shortly after I found out that it will turn yellow in about a year, so that leads to a whole other Feth it! Fortunately I only did it on those 5 scouts, so looks like they will be getting re-based. I have thought about doing a city-esque base, but it has to be something that I can add to my existing bases for them. Any ideas? I'm not a fan of the "Hey look at me standing on top of this mountain of rubble that happens to only be the size of my base" look. I was also thinking of adding some dead grass patches from The Army Painter, anyone use those? I wish I could add servitors! This guy is a special character from the Badab War books and in his entry it does not give him the option. He will just be traveling with one of the Tactical Squads in a drop pod. Although my Apothecary does get servitors, and I have some nice ideas for them including bloody aprons and such :P My Astral Claw progress may slow down a bit soon though. I will let you know more details soon... ;)
augustmanifesto
A) GENERAL ADMIRATION: great stuff. If I get distracted from my Imperial Fists, it will be because you are inspiring me to do Astral Claws :) BASING: I really like the urban bases, it renders the theme of the Retaliator Squads well given that they specialized in operations against the Tyrant's own populations, which would almost certainly be located in urban areas for the most part. But, you are right to want to add a little more. I think less is more here. I think dead leaves would be the best option. First, it would be subtle -- nothing to distract away from the models themselves. Second, and most importantly, it would help to render the cold, hard "Retaliator" feel effectively given that the leaves are DEAD -- nice symbolism, I would think. Third, very easy. C) RANDOM: have you tried metallic chipping on the blue portions of the armor, simulating where the paint had word off to the metal rather than a full dent, as would be the impression created by a black chip? It might really add some coherence and zing to the model aesthetically, not that they need it terribly. Sponging comes to mind. (also, thanks for the speedy reply via email, wherein you recently directed me to this helpful thread)
Hyaenidae
Oh my, that Techmarine is pretty. Awesome job, dude. Looking forward to seeing him finished. As for basing, when I think of Astral Claws, I think of either the Palace of Thorns, or of ship-to-ship boarding actions. Making ship decking under their feet would look gnarly as hell. Just food for thought.
subtlebrush
That Master of the Forge is ridiculous! I love the multiple eyes and the cloak works out very well.
the damned artificer
The tyrant himself must be very pleased with your work, it's fantastic! I really like your painting style, it's simple and crisp and looks so great. Makes me happy every time there's an update here, so you better have a damn good reason to slow down progress ;D hehe
nurgling6688
I am thinking of adding a 5 man unit of Executioners as a Strenguard squad, what do you guys think? I know the Executioners kept to themselves the whole war and turned on the Astral Claws once they figured out what was going on, but i figured these 5 guys could have been part of a force sent to Badab at the start. Then they stayed with the Claws the whole time just like some of the Lamenters and Mantis Warriors did. Huron can be a very persuasive man. Mostly I just have a sweet idea for the sarge and also want to convert up 2 heavy flamers. Also I have already switched Valthex's helmet to have warmer tones. augustmanifesto
no, man! Keep it all Astral Claws! If you want some variety, make the sterngaurd from a different tyrant legion, so you could change up the iconogrpahy, painting style a bit
Foehammer888
these guys look great. I only have 1 slight critique. With the silver and blue color scheme, the model's are blending into the stone-grey bases. I might suggest going with something that might contrast better with the silver-blue model. The base you had a few pages back for the fire hawks terminator might actually work pretty well. Or maybe a redder/terachota earth tone. Just a suggestion. nurgling6688
I actaully had them on the desert style bases at first but they got lost in those, the metal reflect light so gets kind of bright/shiny in real life. This makes both the model and the base light. As for why my progress may slow slightly, I am taking on a commission for the 2nd Company of the Astral Claws. So although my own marines may slow down a bit, do not worry. There will be PLENTY of Astral Claw updates coming soon.
RedMoon
i used the same baking soda snow on my space wolves and all you have to do is mix some white paint in and it will keep it from yellowing had my wolves about a year now and only my lord turned yellow cause i based him first and didnt put the white in. lol
nurgling6688
Just a quick update today, Finished his arms/gun for the most part. May do more or change some things once the whole model is done. His servo harness is now done and awaiting paint. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/valthexgun.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/valthexshoulder.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i317/tylerrox6688/valthexshoulder2.jpg Comments and crit welcome. Already see a few things to tidy up. I am considering making the cog around the Tyrants claw chipped and faded. Showing his altering alliengeances. Tried to do that already by having the star go over top of it.
