Chaos Space Wolves - Skyrar's Dark Wolves

you know, if you're not comfortable running them as chaos marines, you could probably pass them as space wolf 13th company

I intend to use the space wolf codex for now. But I'm trying to model the figs so I can use both the SW as the CSM codex.

Here's a small update. From left to right: Long Fang Sergeant, Grey Hunter with Mark of the Wulfen, Rune Priest and Grey Hunter with Meltagun. I still have to paint the bolter and meltagun separately.

I still need to paint the wolf pelts (don't have the right paints with me for the moment) and do the chapter symbol on the shoulder pad and the bases.

I have not yet decided what color to paint the force weapon on the Rune Priest. Any thoughts and ideas are welcome!

I went to a local GW store yesterday and picked up the bleached bone I was missing to paint the wolf fur. I also decided to try my hand on some blending for the rune priest's force sword. I like the result (for a first attempt at blending).

So now that I got some more work done, here are some detailed pics.

Only the shoulder pad symbol and the base and these are finished.

I have started work on the next batch of models as well. I will post some WIP shots when I have done the basecoasts.

Your marins are very awesome, and well-painted, but - when I look a their eyes, I start to giggle. They are too pronounced and cartoonish. The rune priest, in particular, looks like he's going OMGZ YOUR HEAD EXPLODEZ. It is amusing, and I don't think that's what you're going for.

They are meant to be tabletop standard. So when you look at them from a distance, the expression in the eyes is not that visible. I'm trying my best but I don't want to spend hours touching up on eyes that will be ignored most of the time :tu:

I hope I get better at it with time and practice :)

I got some work done today on my next batch of marines. I got them all to the stage of (pre-badab black wash) basecoats and did the badab black wash for shading. So here are some WIP shots ...

C&C welcome!

I tried something out for my scouts. I clipped/filled away the acquila and made a mold of a chaos star off one of my bits.

http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/906/dsc06990jw.jpg

I then filled in the mold with green stuff, let it dry overnight and then put it on the scout torso.

http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/8382/dsc06994hz.jpg

The mold seems to fit the body well enough, only problem was when I put it on the torso, I placed it a little bit off centre and due to the superglue I had on, I couldn't remove it anymore. I'll have to be more carefull next time.

I'll prime this bit and see what it gives when I paint it up.

If anyone has some tips & tricks for this kind of greenstuffing, please let me know ...

I think these are amazing so far!

Really makes me wanna stop painting my Great Company and switch alligeance!

As for the eyes, I struggle with 'em too, but the reason they might look a little 'pop-eyed' is that the pupil needs to touch the eyelid with no white showing above or below.

(Lost count of how many eyeballs I've screamed at for not lookin right!)

But with the Mark of The Wulfen character, it works because it gives the impression that he's all wild eyed with rage!!!

But, like I say, really think your dark Wolves are awsome. ;)

I've made some progress today. I still need to do the bases and the chapter symbol on the shoulderpad for all of them.

I've also made a test snow base. I would really appreciate some input on this!

What color should I paint the trim? Keep it white, paint it black, ... ?

I like the figs, but my only comment is the color choice. The armor itself is very dark and menacing with blacks/dark greys/shadow greys/pale blues. Very fitting of the "dark wolves" title. However, as chaos marines, the hair/skin color doesn't seem to jive. I would expect the dark wolves to have pale complexions and darker brown/grey/jet black hair. The warmth of the current hair and skin color just seems at odds with both the armor color, and the "evil" marine persona.

I am running them as codex Space Wolves and I want my opponent to be able to see this clearly, hence the more traditional red haired marines. I am considering some greys as well, but the red hair also gives a nice bright spot on a otherwise rather dark mini. I am keeping everything generic chaos so no sickly nurgle marines or something similar ...

The standard bearer's eyes are so perfect, whatever method you used you should probably recreate. However. The rest still make me want to giggle, especially the top guy :P

I agree with the comment about the hair should be darker, but I also agree that you should make it clear to the opponent that it Space Wolves.

Oh, and BTW, these are better than table-top quality.

I recently posted about trying some stuff out for my shoulder pads.

Ordering custom shoulder pads was too expensive so I had to look at alternatives.

My first attempts : using decals and then painting over them.

http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/5374/dsc03790j.jpg

My latest attempt is green stuff relief made from a self-made mould of a spacewolf bit. I do think I can get it a little thinner than this one if I try at it again.

I don't think I will be able to sculpt the forked tongue. So I either have to paint it by hand or drop it all together.

But I don't know what to choose. Any help would be appreciated!

I've been stalking this thread from the shadows since its inception, and every update keeps me impressed, awesome work. On the topic of your shoulderpad emblems, Lamenter over at his website Master of the Forge has just put up a vid showing how he does his, 1. it is very helpful, 2. he offers to custom make a mould with Marine sized, termi sized and tank sized emblems for 25 GBP, so I'm sure he could do your forked tongue for you.

Cheers, and keep'em coming,

Jono

Thanks for the link. Will check it out!

Personally I like the sculpted way better as it is easier to paint. Especially for some of the already assembled models (like the wolfguard) that have the shoulder pad half covered

I'm going to give the sculpted shoulder pads one more chance. But to make sure it will look nice, I got in contact with Simon at masteroftheforge.com who will make some custom sculpts and moulds. So until I get my hands on those, my marines will be considered "finished" without a chapter symbol on their shoulder pad.

I still need to paint up a meltagun and a bolter and do my bases to finish the models I'm working on. I wasn't planning on painting the rocks on the bases but I will give it a try on test base.

I've started sorting out my bits for my next ten marines that will be assembled. I still have to clean up all the parts. I will post pictures when I have assembled them.

Oooo pretty bases. I have to say I'm a sucker for snow bases (I do hail from the state famous for its insane amount of snow fall) and these look great. What did you use for them?

The rock part is actual pieces of stone that I attatched with a piece of green stuff. The green stuff also makes the surface uneven and more natural. I basecoated the stone with chaos black and then drybrushed with codex grey followed by a drybrush of space wolves grey. The rest off the base was painted white and then covered in bicarbonate of soda. The trim was then painted chaos black.
