Silver Skulls: Gideon Battle Tanks

Recommended Posts

Some very nice work, I really like what you've done with the Land Raider, although the insets look a bit too dark to my eyes.

You are right. I would liked to have airbrushed those but didn't trust my ability to use masking techniques. But then painting large flat areas with a brush sucks as well. I will probably go back over the insets with some VMA Steel to brighten them up.

So, I am getting back into it. Not much progress worth showing so far. I have spent a lot of time filing down edges on 10 metal figures (Masters of the Chapter, and one of the old 'Veteran' sets). I am also prepping a 'bag o skulls' from Secret Weapon Miniatures. The skulls are very small and metal and don't come on a sprue so cleaning them up is quite the task (I'd rather pull my fingernails out!). I think it will be worth it in the end when I have skulls all over the place; on models, covering bases.....

MOAR SKULLZ!!!!!!!!!

ehem... sorry about that...

Anyways....

So, I have started a youtube channel. I just got my Microsoft LifeCam Cinema (720p) in the mail today from Amazon. (the damn thing was to my door in less than 24hrs.... I think Amazon uses f***ing magic....)

Anyways, here is my first video:

Nothing spectacular, just testing the camera and talking about what I am wanting to do in the future.

Hi guys, is this the new silver skulls thread? I could not find the old one, really like the models six :-)

Not quite sure what you mean. This has always been my WIP thread. I did change the title at one point. It used to be "WIP: Silver Skulls" or something like that.

Thanks for the compliment. I will hopefully be adding some more pictures this week.

I used some of my not so glamorous models to try some things. I tried free-handing the tactical arrows, and painted one kneepad green to add a bit of color. I did a very simple basing job and tried out some vallejo pigment to get a weathered effect on their feet to help blend with the base. I still need something else on the bases. I am thinking maybe some kind of burnt colored static grass.

Feedback welcome.

Like the weathering, looks good, subtle but realistic looking. I will say that the painted arrows look good, one thing I did was to vary the size of all the arrows in my squad and put them in different places on the shoulder pad because I knew that I couldnt get them all the same size.

I hope that gives you an idea as to what I was trying to describe.

Lastly I like your green color, just dont know if it works as well with the silver and black as red does or even blue. That is just a personal feeling though, as red stands out more to me.

Either way keep it up, love what you have done so far!

Nice looking Silver Skulls you've got there.

I think the weathering on them looks spot on. Not too heavy. Your choice with the static grass, sometimes less is more.

Thanks. The more I look at them I am not sure grass would fit. maybe some larger rocks or something.

Nice marines, and I like that idea. I may try it.

Ok, so after the Big Momma Cannon project I am forcing myself to get back on track with my beloved Silver Skulls.

I just prepped these wonderful pieces and hope to get to painting them very soon. I think they will really set my Rhino's apart if I can pull it off right.

I am thinking black doors, green arrows, and silver skulls. What do you think?

So here are the ChapterHouse Studios rhino doors with base colors applied:

Side Door

Now to save yourself some time and effort if using an airbrush:

1. Paint the door(s) first

2. Mask the Door(s)

3. Paint the arrows

3.5 Highlight arrows!

4. Mask the arrows

5. Paint the skulls

I did not do this order and wasted time and effort.

Also, I got lazy and one of the sets I did not wash with soapy water. I am guessing this one was it:

This is very very frustrating. The tape just kept peeling the paint back. I didn't keep track of which doors I didn't wash but it must be this one. I can't think of any other reason for this to happen. /sigh So I will try to fix it later. Too frustrated to deal with it now.

Wow, it's been a looong time... So I have no finished a large batch of infantry. The freehanding was a pain and i suck at edge highlighting (bolters)... But overall, I think they look pretty good. And consider nearly all the armies in my area are unpainted, I will be proud to put them on the table (if I ever actually make it out to play again lol).

Hmm, I let this thread linger for too long.

So, last night I started customizing my 2nd Land Raider (even though I still haven't finished the first one):

In these pictures you see 4 doors, one set will go on the first land raider.

The skulls and bones are from the Wargames Factory skeleton warriors kit. The chain is the smallest I could find at Hobby Lobby some time ago. Too big for use on troops but not too bad for vehicles.
