The Primarchs - Artwork

Eh, true enough, but even that looks like it could be part of Magnus's shoulderplate, and the hand on the scythe honestly looks like Magnus's. Though it's hard to argue with the scythe :cuss

You can see Magnus' right hand with a ball of purple energy floating above his palm, the scythe is being held by a right hand as well, so unless Magnus has two right arms attached to his right side, it has to be Mortarion's arm holding his famous scythe.

Tremendous, I do hope they release that as a poster.

I think some people on here just like complaining! That is a marvellous piece of art which wonderfully depicts the characters in question.

The only one who doesn't look as I imagined is Angron and considering how many of them are featured, that's pretty good going.

(Also, the point on Sanguinius' hair being blonde/black, aren't we prepared for minor things like this yet? The cover of Prospero Burns has Leman Russ as blonde... which makes him look better even.)

Has Angron ever been described as large? I think this makes him much less "normal". Almost all of the Primarchs are "large and powerful". I really like the Small and furious approach.

Magnus is one of my favorite Primarchs, and him looking at the reader(or something no one else can see) is great.

what a nice piece of art.

But I have to say, I don't like the look of angron. He just looks like a deamon or some strange alien and not "human" enough for me. Okay, they tinkered with his head around, but this is just a little bit too much.

The rest is brilliant depicted :)

Hmm, I really think Magnus is looking at Angron's display of rage during a celebration. I't sounds a bit 'light' for 40K to have a primarch 'winking' at the reader...

The Heresy Artbooks seem depict Angron as normally-built - check the concept art by John Blanche. My view is that he's just proportionally bigger than an athletic human, not a 3 by 3 metres muscled behemoth. His arms will still be thick as logs, of course, but they won't be an upper pair of legs, so to speak.

That being said, I do think he should be on the imposing side of the Primarch spectrum, so he should be a tad higher than he seems, here. About the height of Jaghatai Khan, perhaps, or even higher. Not Magnus-tall, though, but Magnus got shortened here, as well. Here's how I see it:

Giant

- Magnus

Taller than the average Primarch but proportionally built

- Horus

- Angron

Taller than average and wide as a hell

- Vulkan

- Dorn

- Ferrus?

Average (slight differences between them, of course)

- Sanguinius

- Guilliman

- Corax

- Leman Russ

- El'Jonson

- Khan

- Perturabo

A tad shorter, average built

- Lorgar

- Alpharius and Omegon

Leaner, average height

- Fulgrim

- Night-Haunter

Wraith-like

- Mortarion

I always imagined Angron as some kind of 15 foot warlord who towered over his enemies like Dr Manhattan in Vietnam. :P

When I think about it though, taking the Alpharius approach of making him only a little bigger than his marines make sense. Angron at the head of his berserker hoard sprinting at the enemy in full battle lust. Looks the part.

I'd put it this way:

Giant

- Magnus

Taller than the average Primarch but proportionally built

- Leman Russ

- Vulkan

Taller than average and wide as a hell

- Angron

- Perturabo

- Ferrus

Average (slight differences between them, of course)

- Horus

- Sanguinius

- Dorn

- Guilliman

- Corax

- El'Jonson

- Khan

A tad shorter, average built

- Lorgar

- Alpharius and Omegon

Leaner, average height

- Fulgrim

- Night-Haunter

Wraith-like

- Mortarion

I want to reiterate how much I love the shorter, scrawny-er look of angron. It makes him a much more interesting character than just a massive raging brute.

When you see such a comparatively small primarch lifting up a 5 ton battle tank and chucking it at you, the almost demonic fury upon his face, you know it's rage and emotion that fuels his might, not just muscle mass. I like this far more than saying all his strength comes from roid-rage. It feels like an evolution of the character beyond the old 80's view of him.

Throne how can people be just so wrong??

This is the correct order!

Giant

- Magnus

-Mortarion

(He is mentioned as towering over both Angron and Horus in FlightoftheEisenstein)

Taller than the average Primarch but proportionally built

- Vulkan

Taller than average and wide as a hell

- Angron

- Perturabo

- Ferrus

Average (slight differences between them, of course)

- Horus

- Sanguinius

- Dorn

- Guilliman

- Corax

- Khan

- Lorgar

A tad shorter, average built

- Alpharius and Omegon

-Leman Russ

-El' Jonson

Leaner, average height

- Fulgrim

- Night-Haunter

Wraith-like

pointless to categorise

In a few sources (Horus Rising, Aurilian) Angron is described as being stocky so his stature in the pic shouldn't be that much of an issue, and as Bill mentioned Magnus is a tall as he wants to be, but is still the tallest of primarchs. Taller than the Emperor too.

The previous post on this book describes it as:

'Horus Heresy four novellas compilation titled "The Primarchs" featuring tales by Nick Kyme (Ferrus Manus), Rob Sanders (Alpharius/Omegon), Gav Thorpe (The Lion), Graham McNeill (Fulgrim)'

isn't it a bit odd that only one of the 4 primarchs appearing in the book is also on the cover, or is the cover an illustration of a scene in Fulgrim's story?

I like them all except Khan, who looks like he should climb back into Conan the Barbarian.

EDIT: "The greatest joy in life is to crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women," would be an incredible quote from the Khan.

Bit of a weird point, but I don't think they are handsome enough. Ones like Angron and the Khan aren't supposed to be good looking, but Fulgrim and Sang are but Fulgrims face looks too pointy and slightly old. Can't really see Sangs face but from what i can see he doesnt look like i thought he would. I imagined more of a serene, tranquil face but he looks like some kind of prince there. Also Angron looks like a WHF vampire, and he is too small. Being smaller than other Primarchs is fine, but he looks marine sized. The way he is described in "After De'shea" and whichever of the first 3 HH books he appears in he sounds big and brutal, I'm sure at one point he has to have a transport all to himself

The Khan looks cool though, need more stories about him and the WS, Dorn is awesome, and I like how Horus and Fulgrim look like they're scheming.

Probably one of the best covers I've seen.

Vulkan. Duh.

Guilliman directed the picture.

Ferrus built the camera.

Perturabo didn't want anything to do with a picture that had Dorn in it.

Russ was too hungover to show up.

No one invited Jonson.

^This made me legitimately laugh.

I can totally see Jonson seeing this picture later on and going "What the :) ? Why didn't anyone tell me!??!"

Magnus is looking at the viewer, breaking the fourth wall, like he knows your there.

/100% agree with you on this. I would like to think its the Emperor he is looking at.

Really? It seemed to me that he was looking at Angron with a bit of annoyance/irritation at his brother's demeanor.

I don't think Angron's as short as people are making him out to be. It looks clear to me, considering his head's position in the armor and his arms stance on the railing, that he's hunched over, probably wondering why they didn't let him into the Ullanor Playpen...read: a small chamber filled with Ogryns hopped up on Angel Dust with a sharpened, rusty stick in the middle of the room.

I think the pic looks great and I can't wait to see the officially released version.

Having said that, am I really the only person curious as to why Horus is in Terminator armour in that pic (which he isn't depicted as wearing until well after Ullanor)?
