Angels of Redemption - No Weapon So Savage

Rough at the moment, I decided on a trio of skulls to drive home the idea of "Inspiration", as originally, the Muses in mythology numbered 3 in Boetia, until the poets Hesiod and Homer changed it to 9.

Only two things certain in life: retcons and taxes!

They are the goddesses of inspired creation and works after all, something very connected with the chaplaincy,

Muses and Chaplains! Hahahaha, Candleshoes you are on a winning streak! Keep 'em coming!

Also, I was able to catch Forgeworld and add 2 contemptor dreadnaught autocannon arms and a rocket hat to my order. He'll be made into and used as a Mortis Dread with the new FAQ rules, and in the hopes that it will be included in the new codex.

Ok this is serious stuff now. I have yet to see a Contemptor with a single autocannon - let alone two! Look forward for this! Still serious. :)

Hello everyone,

My Forgeworld order came in earlier today, and I have been gleefully hacking and gluing away tonight. Hopefully by Sunday I will have some progress photos to put up. For now, I leave you with the obligatory spread photo, before I tore into it like a 5 year old on Christmas.

;) I ... must... have...

Most of all I'd like to see your Deimos pattern stuff - both of them - and your expirience. I loved the rhino - but visually am not a huge fun of the Pred. But I can be turned! :P And Mk5 rocks! (Mk3 rocks too actually) hahaha!

Are you gonna complete the Contemptor first?

I am 110% blown away by the smallest of things sometimes. I agree with the crowd about the awesomeness of everything you're doing...but what I really can't get over is the horizontal sword in place of the double-headed arrow on the tactical squad shoulder pad... I've half a mind to repaint all fifty (sixth squad is going to be FW iron armor with phobos bolters, it seems that great minds think alike!) of my tactical marines' shoulder pads accordingly!

Thanks for noticing the sword instead of the tactical arrow, it isn't pronounce, but its one of those things that's there if you're looking.

I have some updates ready, mainly the Mortis Pattern Contemptor. Now, he is bare bones at the moment, but the base and the pose/body/arms are set. He'll get the Dark Angels treatment with symbols and conversions now. Those autocannons are huge and very detailed, glad I decided to pick them up as the gun option. He also stands pretty tall on his base, the arms just make marine models look very small. Very happy with the kit and highly recommend it to anyone thinking about buying one.

I managed to take quite a few pictures of what I am working on, but have decided to spread them out through the week. I'll leave with you the beginnings of the Veteran Sergeant for the 4th Squad. After looking at some of the extensive Dark Millennium artwork by Geoff Taylor, I caught a glimpse of an alternate helmet crest colour scheme. I think I'll be trying it out.

One more...

The first 8 models so far... some more complete than others.

http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p113/Darkbeastman/IMG_3965-1.jpg

Now look what you've done! I want an autocannoned Contemptor too! Aaaaargh!

Are you going to use the Master's helmet for a Vet Sergeant? He'll better be heroic! Also I'm really curious to see the strange color scheme for the feathers applied on the mini. Thruth being said I am unsure about it at the moment... Too Germanic. Which is fine but not really associated with DAs. Of course if I see it painted i might change my view like 100%

This log never fails to intrigue - keep 'em coming!

Really nice progress on the army, nice collection of forgeworld bits too aye  like the contemptor, great base and pose, keep telling myself I need to get one but I got to much to paint as it is  . Looking forward to seeing more progress.

Great Stuff!

Hello everyone,

Thanks for all the comments. I don’t know why, but in my mind I always saw Caliban as a place where all the fairy tales were real, and where there are no happy endings. Being the death world that it is, the stories were ingrained with the natural dangers of the planet, and these were imprinted on the inhabitants… much like how the current era Dark Angels use similar tales to explain portions of their past to initiates and brothers who enter certain circles, and act as a barrier to pass, in order to enter others.

With Imperial travel, trade and influence having a few decades of time before the fall of Caliban, it is not un-realistic to think that such tales, wrapped and made from the poisonous wood, would start to reach scholars, collectors, libraries etc. If preserved and kept (think Nalwood from Dan Abnett’s Gaunt’s Ghosts) they would likely be an extremely wealthy person’s prize piece in a collection.

The sonnet I wrote was inspired by John Blanche’s artwork “Beast of Grunderwald”, which just sang out the sad, bleak and dreary existence that Caliban would be. Even the maid looks forlorn and hopeless, almost dead in her bonds.

From there, I knew I could lay out my “fairy tale” idea in a way that would make sense. The first 8 lines create the problem, the 9th line shows the turn, and the last 5 lines shows the resolution. A rough translation would be:

Northward bound Sir Lauphlan travelled, through bleak grey weather. He heard that the great beast known as Grunderwald had left a girl alive and taken her to the heavy woods. Not a knight save Lauphlan was seen for 25 days, such was the terror the beast inspired. Sir Lauphlan searched the north, armed with the tools of his craft. Ever present were the trees, never allowing the sun or moon to penetrate, it seemed like the woods ate life itself. Finally, our hero finds the maiden, who lies dead before him in a horrible state. Grunderwald waits, crushing her body beneath his bulk. The knight, duty bound, attacks the beast, only to see the dead maid rise up, and mock him in unison with the beast as one. On old Caliban, everyone knows, that good may only keep evil at bay, but never conquer it. No soul will ever find salvation, other than living another day. Stricken by crusade, war, plague, locust and beast in every direction. Life itself rests with the knights, who’s grim duty it is to burn the funeral pyres of the dead, and to clear the massacred villages. All others fear Caliban.

Now, on to the models! All are still very WIP.

This Forgeworld MKV Heresy armour is just wonderful. I decided to make 1 suit of it and Iron armour straight up, with no conversions.

The marine on the left will is actually wielding a plasma gun in his left hand, but is bearing down with his knife. The marine on the right has a flesh-hook chain attached to the pommel of his combat blade.

The image on the left shows a bit of what will be left of the Dark Angel symbol on a shoulder, before the weathering and battle damage gets put in. The right is a razor-wire noose that Battle-Brother Atropos has wrapped around his arm, and is left hanging.

The bare bones of the veteran sgt. All veterans will be gaining their own personal heraldry on their right shoulder, as well, all squad leaders will all be receiving different sets of large helm crests and back banners.

And here are the 8 of them so far, all in different states of progress.

MkV is just the best! I could not bring myself to mix it with other types - it just looks too good! Besides, after reading ADB's NL stories it struck me that mixing armour types is something that marines with little access to proper support would do, like I dunno, traitors? - In any case something the DAs (and especially the Consecrators) will have nothing to do with. That's my theory... :) But your lot has so much personality, it brings tears to my eyes! And it's not even painted yet!!!

I really, REALLY like the fact that you go overboard with the sergeants! Yes they should look like other Chapters' Captains! The pose is great and the helmeted head is speaking tons for the quality of the individual that's wearing it! And don't get me started on Atropos...

Only comment: I need to see them painted!!!

You’ve got a great point about mixing the armour types, I think after you brought that up, I will keep the MK3 AND 5 complete and together… why wouldn’t the oldest chapter have quite a few complete suits or access to maintaining them?

Ya, I am taking a lot of inspiration from people who have put their armies up here on BandC and felt that the sergeants would really benefit looks wise, taking a lot of the “best things” about the imagery surrounding the Chapter… which will likely be very over the top compared to other chapters or armies, but I started the project with the “Rule of Cool” mindset that some people talk about, if it looks good, that’s good enough for me. The same will be applied to the basic marines, many of whom will likely have pistols, bolters and a close combat weapon… oh well if they can’t have access to them. Who knows what new fluff, or units or options we will get.

Very cool looking. They almost have the same feel that John Blanche's miniatures do ;)

Thanks a lot Marshal! I think I am doing the Dark Angels a lot differently than when I did Blood Angels. They had a lot more clean to them, and looking back it doesn’t really fit with my personality. I really did like the new artwork in their codex though… I thought it was a spectacular vault of ideas, even my Terror Marking came from it.

I think I have photos still of what the BA’s I did look like for comparison. I think there is a lot more character and personality put into my Dark Angels:

Damit, I dont know if I want you to keep writing, converting or painting... Would you care not to sleep and do the three?

I think this project will be consistent, but slow going. We have our only really “Tournament” 1500pts come summer, hopefully by then I will have enough painted to enter, though I have a feeling if 6th edition does drop, and we get new models in the box set, things might go a lot quicker in the excitement. I have a bunch of ideas for all three items, and I will try and spread the writing, creation and painting updates evenly. I do have my Deathwing terminators made and ready to be painted though… maybe those pics will come up sooner rather than later… as well… the Deimos Pred is all put together now, just waiting for some DA bits to go on before photos get taken.
