It really looks awesome... the quality of the meral is really pewter like - I think it really differentiates your GotC from other all-metal armies like Silver Skulls or even Iron Warriors... Also great idea to go with white lining of the cape! That way you get a nice contrast from the generally dark metal/black robes pallette while avoiding the more common red... Beutiful winged sword too - cant wait to see this one finished...
I agree with Sempers comments. I like the idea of the robe color signifying office for a change as well. Will you do the Librarian the same?

That's the plan! It also gives me the chance to paint something other than red on the robes, which is a nice change ;) I'm looking forward to painting the librarian, as its a lovely model!

Btw, just in case anyone is interested, the robes were painted as follows:

Base - Outer Robes - Adeptus Battlegrey

Base - Inner Robes - Deneb Stone

Base - Crest - Mechrite Red

Layer - Crest - Red Gore

3 x Nuln Oil wash over the grey and red

1 x Nuln Oil wash over the stone

Drybrush (in increasingly lighter stages) - adeptus battlegrey then codex grey over outer robes, blood red over crest

Inner robes - drybrush kommando khaki, light wash of sepia in creases, drybrush bleached bone then tyrant skull

So, that's how I do black without using chaos black! :P The ridiculous thing is that I hadn't tried it before and wasn't sure if it would work very well - so it was a bit of a gamble just going ahead and doing it on the actual model, but hey ho, it worked :P

Holy hell that looks absolutely amazing already! The robes are super nice, but I'm actually grabbed by how clean and defined the armor is. How do you do that?

Thanks :) Actually, the armour is probably the easiest bit to do. I prime the model with Army Painter Plate Mail spray, and then apply a light drybrush of boltgun metal over the top. Then I give it 3 washes of Nuln Oil, and right at the end I do some gentle highlights on some of the edges with boltgun metal and/or chainmail depending on how much I want it to pop.

The boltgun metal drybrush is a new addition, as I originally did the armour paint scheme using Badab Black wash, not Nuln Oil. The old washes used to be a bit more "sticky", but the new shades are "runnier" when applied directly to a primer, and need the boltgun metal to help them adhere and not just run into the cracks and seams.

I did a bit more work on the Chaplain tonight, but he's still not complete (he doesn't have a left hand for a start!). The colours are slightly off from reality as the photos were taken on my iphone. Obviously for the finished photos I'll use my decent camera! :)

Final update before I go on holiday for two weeks......

DV Limited Edition Chaplain is almost there.....

awesome work.

did the mini come with the left arm split half way up the upper arm, or is that something you did?

might try the same as a way to magnetise, otherwise I end up needing too many shoulderpads!

That's the way it comes, which allows for some level of poseability! I was happy with the plasma so I didn't magnetise :D

  • 4 weeks later...

Thanks guys, here are some more photos:

I converted one of the DV terminators (one of the twin SB/PF termies) to twin LCs, and am also trying a new technique with the power sword (not quite finished yet as it nees some glaze and varnish)

Just cos I love Lightning claws :)

I also went mad and painted up a TH/SS terminator from a box of assault marines that I have waiting to go. Brother Sergeant Zael is a former member of the Deathwatch (as evidenced by the Inquisitorial shoulder pad in the 3rd photo). I like the idea of the GotC 1st Company volunteering for service in the Deathwatch as a way of gathering intelligence about how much the Inquisition knows about the secret legacy of the Dark Angels and their successors! ;)

Next up is the DV Librarian

I'd like to see how you handle a vehicle in this same gritty paint style.

Me too, as I currently have no idea! B)

You must have been rolling on the Divination table recently, Isiah, because after I've finished the DV Librarian (currently about 50% done), I've got 2 partially painted Rhinos which I have promised myself I will finish!

So, some wip photos of my Dark Vengeance Librarian. Not finished yet, needs basing and some highlights finishing off, but progress is being made :)

The robes are blue to tie in with the Heresy era fluff, which has the robes changing colour with "job title", rather than the more usual 40K scheme, where the armour changes colour.

I think that changing the robes highlights the concept that the DA successors are still buyiing in to the 1st Legion idea! :)

I'm also trying out some edge highlighting techniques for the first time....in for a penny, in for a pound! :)

Blue robes are ace but also is your fantastic shade of metal... I still can't get enough of it! :o He sure is a great addition to your force! keep up.

Suggestion: Try the Chapter Symbol on white instead of red. I think the red over blue is not outlining the shape so much imo.

EDIT: Oh and don't tell Stobz anything! Keep your mouth shut! We don't want him to become any better now, do we?

Still got the sword to do, base and other highlights to do, and I've got some of the Armorcast blast effect thingummies and am toying with the idea of using one in his right hand to simulate him casting some form of witchfire type spell. What do you think?

@ Captain Semper - Thanks very much! I know what you mean about the red chapter symbol, although it isn't finished yet as that is one of the parts which hasn't received its highlights. I wanted to paint it red as red is the spot colour for the whole army, and my Interrogator Chaplain has the symbol in red on the back of his robes. Hmm, I'll try the red highlight tonight and see what I think. If I don't like it I'll repaint it white! ;) Sorry though, I'd feel bad not telling Stobz how I did the robes....I've stolen enough of his ideas in the last few months ;)

@ Stobz - Your wish is my command. I even drew up a nice diagram while I should have been doing some work (having your own office is a bonus sometimes!). The technique on display uses old and new GW paints, because I never throw anything away! :P But it can be done with the corresponding paints entirely from the old or new range:

1) Prime with Army Painter Plate Mail spray (this is to make the armour easier, any colour spray will do)

2) Basecoat with Mordian Blue (Basecoat brush)

3) 2nd Basecoat of Enchanted Blue (Basecoat brush) - cover all of the Mordian blue, even in the recesses

4) Wash with Asurmen Blue (Standard brush) - Don't slap on the wash, but don't skimp either.....as Han Solo would have said "I don't know, wash casual!" I use a standard brush for better control on smaller models

5) Light drybrush with Teclis blue (Small Drybrush) - cover all of the robes except the recesses, but be gentle. It takes me a long time to drybrush, as I have almost no paint on the brush to get better control

6) Light drybush with Ice blue (Small drybrush) - only on the raised sections of robes. Don't worry if the Ice blue spreads out away from ridges a bit, this will help it blend in with the Teclis blue once it is glazed

7) Light "edge" drybrush with Etherium Blue dry paint (Small drybrush) - sections of the robes where there is a colour change e.g. blue to bone, or along the bottom edge of the hem, or on 1 or two very prominent raised edges. 6 & 7 are what gives the "glow".

And one more stage which I haven't done yet

8) Glaze with Guilliman Blue (Standard Brush) - not too much glaze here, the aim is to lose the graininess of the drybrushing and give the colour on the main flat parts of the robes more depth

Thanks so much fmp, my DV libby also thanks you in advance.

I apologise for using the term "glowey". Despite my immature charm I am not a teenage girl discussing makeup so please replace "glowey" with "luminous". Probably just as bad heh heh heh.

Now I have to go and buy some new paints, bugger it ;)

Tell your libby he's welcome, as are you! ;) No problem with the word glowey, I use words like that all the time! I deliberately wanted to "over-highlight" this model, as I've come to realise that there's a marked difference in painting so that models look good for the camera, and painting so they stand out on the table when you are standing 3 feet away from them. I've tended to try to "paint for the camera" recently, with the result that some of my models (e.g. my DV cultists) look a little dull on the table. This is an effort to redress the balance!
