Thank you, thank you, thank you! :D Very kind words indeed from all of you guys.

@WW - tbh, I've never really been a fan of the official GotC Cahpter badge, so I've never bothered doing it on any of my marines.....I suppose I should tthink about it! :)

@Stobz - brave for doing the weathering, or foolish? :) Basically, I looked at a load of examples of different weathering and battle damage, thought "I reckon I can do that", so tried it.....fortunately it turned out OK, otherwise it could have ruined everything! What's a practice model? In for a penny, in for a pound I say! :P

In order to disrupt Stobz' cleverly designed plan to paint whatever I'm painting, only faster and better, I have changed tack without warning! So Sammael is on the backburner, and the Venerable Dread is back in the box. Instead, I looked towards one of my old models which needs bringing up to speed with the "new" army. I picked up a las/missile dread from ebay for next to no money about a year and a half ago. Unfortunately, it looked like it had been painted by dipping it into a tin of Dulux, and when I managed to get all of the paint off it revealed that about 3 pots of glue had been used to put it together. So I cleaned it up and painted it as best I could at the time, and added a bit of bling to hide some of the worst excesses on the front of the model, but I've never been particularly happy with the result. This was a shame as I had converted an Aegis Quad gun into autocannon arms and used the Dread as a rifleman in almost every game I played.

Anyway, since I first painted him I have acquired a much bigger bits box, and the RW accessory sprue has a lot of Dreadnought stuff which I can use to fix some of the problems with the Dread. So last night I bit the bullet, got him out of the box, and started cleaning him up.

Here is a pic of the temporary paint job I did after I bought him....

Hey, I missed the two transports there... excellent work on the wear and tear front! :P sometimes being brave pays-off! Great additions to your army there facmanpob this is growing to be a very spectacular force.

With all the work you've put into salvaging this dread, have you considered a career in art maintainance? :D Some Renaissance paintings get less attention than this dread did! ;)

He he! I'm not sure that the average art museum would be too happy about me turning up with my hobby knife, dettol and toothbrush and hacking away at a priceless relic of the 13th century! :P

Thanks for the comments on the transports :D I've been thinking about increasing the armoured element of my force and tried to win a massive lot on ebay last night but was sniped with 8 seconds to go! :( It was 2 Vindicators and 2 Rhinos (2 partially built, 2 on sprues), a FW Tempest speeder and a load of other FW bling..... shame I lost out as a couple of cheap Predator sprues and I would have had a significant number of hull options!

Anyway, after losing out in the auction I hacked off the sarcophagus front of the Dread and replaced it, took off the plain "shin guards" and replaced them with the RW sprue DA ones, and re-did the magnets on the autocannon arms as I wasn't happy with my first go last year. I also added a lot of DA bling - purity seals, oath papers, swords and wings and stuff. Tonight I'm either playing a game of 40k with a mate, or carrying on with the Dread....got to paint the new bits, re-do the edge highlights with codex grey, then add in some red to tie in the model with the rest of the army. After that its weathering and battle damage. I'll do some wip shots as I go along, hopefully it'll be done dy the end of the week :)

I don't know why but it looks like the chassis for the Dreadnought is like 4 times bigger making the legs look really small........ It could very well be sleep is calling to me much more so than I am realizing.

I think that's partly the angle of the photo and partly because he hasn't got any leg armour yet.

think its the lack of shin guards

anyway - the dread is looking good! liking the AC conversions

not sure about the lenses on the lascannon or the ML though. could be these are still wip as you have a red one on the AC

The chassis does look oversized. Its a combination of the angle of the photo, the fact that the dread was built leaning forward at the waist, and the lack of shin guards - I ripped the old ones off and the new ones are being painted separately :D

I haven't done any work on the lenses as yet, so these are as they were in the original "quickie" paint job from 2011. All lenses and bits and bobs are still to be done :)

@Cap Semper - As far as the "metal treatment" goes, I hadn't really planned to do any of that work on the main body as it was going to be a 3rd Company Dread and therefore needed to tie in with the Rhinos, but looking at the new shin guards next to the current bodywork of the chassis I might have to.....so the plan might be to change the paintwork on the main chassis to the Terminator boltgun metal washed down to black scheme....have yet to finally decide! I'll do all of the other work first, then decide that at the end...... I definitely won't be doing the glazed red 2nd Company bike paintjob, as my 2nd Coy doesn't have any Dreads yet. Maybe in the future they might get a Contemptor ;)

I think it gives the impression of: 'I will tear you apart'. Ivery much like the stance and size myself. After all the bigger the gun the better no?

Where are those cannons from the aegis defense lines?

Yeah, they are from the Aegis quad gun.....I really like those autocannons, they remind me of the Flakpanzer Gepard (albeit with more barrels!)

btw - anyone else not seeing photobucket photos? Mine all seem to have disappeared! :D [EDIT cancel that - all working normally again!]

So, Rifleman repaint complete, on to the next job. As I'm on a roll with old models, I thought I'd turn my hand to this trusty beast....

gallery_60357_6121_172481.jpg

He was one of my first SM purchases, and the somewhat cack-handed paint job is testimony to that! So, the plan is to give him the 1st company make-over. As the Rifleman is part of 3rd Company, and so has a black main body, so this Dread is part of 1st Company, and will be painted to tie in with the Terminators, a la

http://i548.photobucket.com/albums/ii324/facmanpob/Miniatures/Space%20Marines/1st%20Company/IMG_0756.jpg

So, lots of Nuln Oil and Devlan Mud will be in evidence, as will some new bling on the sarcophagus. I'm at a works Xmas party tonight, so won't start the reapint until tomorrow. All things being equal, I will try to finish him by the weekend. :)

In addition, I'm thinking of joining the PtR party (after a gentle nudge from The Shadow Guard! ;)), albeit a bit late. If I do, then this will be my first vow........so I promise I won't lay a brush on the Dread until I've decided either way ;)

Oh my Lord. How in the world did you do that power sword? Its amazing!

The terminators are great and loving the old school dreadnought.

+1 !!!

Thanks guys. I'm glad you like the sword. I stole the idea (sincerest form of flattery) from Vash in the Grey KNights sub-forum, after I found his incredibly beautiful White Knights army.....Linky

This was only my first go at it and is nowhere near as good as Vash's swords. I used a slightly modified version of his tutorial halfway down the page, but I'm happy with how it went and intend to repaint all my swords this way, hopefully getting better at it as I go. :D

Oh, and in other news I was mildly castigated in Cell 42 for not entering the Path to Redemption....all hail The Shadow Guard....sorry, master! :P So, I've bitten the proverbial bullet and entered! The question is, can I complete 6 vows and a special task by the end of February in order to get all of the Pearls? (I'm assuming its 1 special task after I've caught up on vows, or is it 1 special task per missing pearl?)

This rifleman dread is just to great for words! I really REALLY like your dark metalic effect - Looks totally unique! And the autocannon version?

Regrding completing all these vows look at it this way: you don't have choice! :P

I know I have no choice....even though it pains me to say it! ;)

Regarding Dreadnoughts - thanks for the comments. I'm hoping the AOBR Dread I'm working on for the PtR will complement the Rifleman :P

Personally, I love Dreads. For me they are the epitome of the "grimdarkness-ness" of 40K - half-dead transhuman bodies, suspended in a futuristic amniotic fluid, strapped into a walking coffin of creamite and plasteel, and armed with some of the most ferocious weapons humanity can invent, all the while going slowly more and more insane with the isolation and detachment.....what a miserable existence.....if I could I'd have an entire army of them! :P
